Very late to the thread, wish I had found it earlier. D24 is applying all over to B.F.A. MT or Acting programs. None that are super well known or crazy competitive. Wants an “well rounded” for lack of a better phrase college experience Has auditions coming up and has been academically admitted to a few. Has been fully admitted to local state college and one on the east coast. I’m just glad she will have options. Just wanted to say hi after lurking
This! All this and more. Also in Az. Headed to Chicago for auditions in a few weeks. Found long underwear at Costco lol
Exactly- both schools have been great with accommodating him and letting him sit in on classes, etc. Can’t wait to hear about it (he and his dad are going down in two weeks).
As a resident of the Midwest, I don’t recommend long underwear unless you plan to be outside a lot. You want layers you can remove as needed.
UC and CSU schools do not track or consider Demonstrated Interest.
Yes that is what I was thinking….a way to celebrate her getting in. EA decisions are supposed to be out tomorrow so we will see if she gets in or gets deferred to the regular decision pool.
We went to Utah’s March event last year, it was a well run event, and the campus is very beautiful at that time of year with snow on the mountains all around. You will want to visit early because of the housing deadlines. In fact the deadline this year to apply for LLCs (all the best housing, including Honors housing) and pay the $130 application fee is 3/20, so an event on 3/23 is very much less than ideal (as is the fact that UC results won’t be available until very close to that date). Do not miss this deadline unless you are happy with the cheaper crowded older dorms on the upper campus that are a long walk or Trax/bus ride to lectures.
S21 is a third year at a bfa acting program. The only positive of the covid year was 100% virtual auditions. Keep warm!
Visiting these schools my daughter has gotten into is like a game of Tetris with my calendar. What will fit where…thank goodness she’s already visited the two schools we are still awaiting decisions on.
DC and I will be in Chicago, too. They’ve applied to a mix of BA and BFA theater/acting programs, and they’re looking forward to Unifieds!
Wait you mean I can’t just take off my pants?
Re: admitted students days, I feel like we have it even worse bc in addition to some early and rolling acceptances, we have a lot of decisions coming in mid and late March. So we can’t even plan travel at this point. Way too many possible destinations.
Same, and I’m an idiot and booked a ten day vacation March 21-30 because I naively thought we would be done. So I will be trying to book admitted visits from the jungle in Belize.
Apparently we subscribe to the same book of idiocy. Ours is the first two weeks of March for spring break. Whoops.
When I first moved to the Midwest from the South, I bought long underwear. I wore them exactly one time because I spent a miserable day in overheated buildings and virtually zero time outside. Windproof coat with layers underneath is key.
Same here. If necessary we’ll do re-visits that don’t include specific accepted students events. Depending on outcomes, I think S24 might eliminate a couple of schools if one or two of his favorites come through which would limit the # of possible re-visits up front.
@pilate In fairness, this is the same reason my kids wear shorts and sneakers, and maybe a hoodie, here N of Boston where it’s 23 degrees F.
This is our hope as well!
We will hear from her four RD schools while in Belize. (Two will likely announce while on the plane on way down ) I’m gonna sneak a couple (returnable) University tshirts in my suitcase just in case.
As noted previously, we solved this problem by going where WE (the parents) wanted to go, namely Scotland for two weeks at the end of March.
What happens in April is for Future Self to worry about. Of course I often think Past Self is a jerk for dropping this sort of thing in my lap, but I am sure Future Self will figure it out . . . .
I note I believe if you average out our planned trips, you get something like the climate of North Carolina, which sounds like a perfectly reasonable place for college visits, so I think we are both good within a fair margin of error.
I’m mad at past self for not visiting some schools we happened to be near (but where we prioritized seeing other schools). St Andrews I can forgive past self. I do look forward to your report.
Re: spring college visits before one’s kid makes The Final Decision:
I don’t think it’s necessary to attend on a formal “College X Admitted Students Day.” If it doesn’t work for your schedule, just go on a different day.
We’re headed to Centre College in a little over a week. School counselor told us that the post-admissions letter visits end up feeling different than the junior year visits. It makes sense when I think about it…it’s because now your kid is REALLY making a decision (vs it being ‘oh we’ll get to that later’) and it’s a big decision and it can sometimes feel overwhelming.
DH is chomping at the bit re: wanting to know financial aid #s. He (well, NONE of us) doesn’t like waiting. Welcome to the club! Neither do the rest of us.
I do think that once financial aid packages come in, D24 will send a “thanks but no thanks” to ASU, UNM, & NMSU. I suspect that D24’s order of preference right now is Austin College, U of A, Southwestern Univ.
