Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

It’s a tough road. A good friend has her PhD (in math) from Stanford and makes less as a fully tenured professor than the local public school teachers (who are pretty well paid).

I could see her choosing something like that.

She loves thrifting so I hope we have time to check out a few places around, you never know what you might find!!

Her only dresses right now are a couple of formal type gowns, so she is really in need of more dressy in general without being over the top clothing.

Great suggestion and they have a store not too far from me!

Thank you! I see a mall trip in my near future.

Unfortunately, I’ve left things a bit too much to the last minute for this.

D20 likes this dress (we bought it a couple of years ago). She’s 5’3" (5’2" but I pretend because she wants to be taller)…and between a 2 and 4, depending on brand. She’s a petite size 2 in Jcrew.

That is good to know. I tried Loft and we struck out there (at least the one at the outlet mall).

He sounds like my S24 as well! He wants to do his PhD in Biochem, live in a big city with lavish lifestyle!!

This is not a problem the women in my family have. I really think that a “dress” I have is supposed to be a tunic top, and above ankle length pants are just pants.

It kind of cracks me up when D24 talks with her variously sized and shaped friends about clothing. The only consensus is that there is not a single height/weight that is the golden ticket for things fitting.

When did you sleep then?
Honestly I can’t do both work and college!

My D24 does debate, so we have quite a few “business” dress outfits. She is also petite, and has had luck with Macy’s, Ann Taylor, and old navy. Old navy has petite pants online, and we both like their pixie pants. We’ve also found nice blouses at Marshall’s/ TJ Maxx.

I’m petite and have found Ann Taylor and JCrew to be my go-tos. I actually have the dress linked above and wear it for everything.

My wife is petite and a professional, and Ann Taylor has always been her go to for basic business. She wears lots of other stuff too, but that can take time, tailoring, and so on.

What summer job does she have? I might moonlight!

Ann Taylor has petities, TJ Max, Off the Rack, Macy’s had a great petitie’s section, Banana Republic has a good petites section, easy to go with a tank dress with a blazer, that’s my go to usually, but wide leg pants are good too (just have to be careful as a petite with wide leg pants, could look like a tree stump

Random bit of news - Southwestern Univ sent email to D24 w/links to sign up for several different Admitted Students virtual info sessions (1-hour each) over the next couple of months on different topics. Topics include:

  • student life
  • study abroad
  • internships
  • academic life
  • Welcome to Texas: an out-of-state perspective
  • career & professional development
  • advising & academic support
  • plus 1 session just for parents of admitted students

She’s going to sign up to attend a couple of them.

If she was in state at Texas, she would’ve gotten in to UT for sure since 65%? of enrolled students must be from the state.

In the end, it all worked out. Congrats.

I love it when parents brag on their kids! Brag as much as you want, we can all celebrate her awesomeness! :star_struck: :star_struck: :star_struck:

Yep.

I don’t want to discount the importance of this person’s achievements–getting a full tuition plus stipend from Florida and then graduating near the top of your class, followed by Big Law in Miami, is a great outcome.

But it does not exactly address the margin of error issue, because this particular person didn’t need it.

Is anyone else having trouble trying to figure out when/how to do revisits? The rest of D24’s admissions results will trickle in before spring break, but the final financial aid packages and honors college decisions factor in, significantly for some schools.

When will we have ALL the information? Some of her colleges are waiting on FAFSA (even if not eligible for need based aid), and I really feel for the financial aid officers this year because it seems like a mess is coming their way.

Over/under on us trying to cram in 3 visits in April?

Yes, 100%. Wanted to try and get two visits in for spring break but the logistics are killing me. One of them we have a pretty good idea but the other we won’t know until they process FAFSA.

I am beginning to think we may only be able to do one and then hopefully find time to do the other down the road.

Yes, we have not done college visits to many of the colleges he is applying for. And all college we saw are in in-State. At this point there is a good chance we he may go OOS and I am worried about not visiting them. S24 has a tough time saying which are his top 2 or 3 choices OOS so we can go see now. I want him to visit the mid-west colleges and east coast college in winter so he gets an idea on how the weather is but he does not want to go before he is admitted. So this is causing me stress  as I am the one who does the planning for any kind of trips.
