Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

A lot of the big scholarships early admit kids in contention regardless of final outcome on receiving.

My S24 and your S24 would definitely get along based on this. S24 had lots of thoughts about school merchandise (he didn’t care nearly as much about color…but holy moly did he have thoughts about merch).

Gabelli scholarship finalists get early RD acceptance news from BC.

@isitmayyet is correct. BC announced the Scholars finalists the first week of January along with admission. It was quite the surprise as we were debating just the week before if she should switch to ED2 before the Jan 1 deadline (she did not). She had her RD application in by November 1 so she is one of only a handful of RD admits that already know.

In the case of D24, she got accepted to 3 LACs. We’ve asked all 3 directly whether they use online classes. All 3 have said no…all instruction is in person. Might be some online submission of HW or papers/projects, but there’s no online instruction nor any hybrid instruction either.

Because D24 really really hates online learning, those 3 schools moved a lot higher up the list. So far, based on what I’ve seen from doing schedule of classes searches on the public universities she’s been admitted to, there’s enough online-only and hybrid classes (yes, even for in-person on campus students) that make the 4 public schools a little less desirable.

A year ago when we were going on college tours, we never thought to consider this at all, so we didn’t ask at that time.

Nike schools have great merch. My alma mater has surprisingly moved to New Balance but generally has great merch and most kids wear it on campus.

Most Maine schools have NB as their merch/sponsor as the company makes shoes here. (shoemaking and papermaking are two industries that have almost disappeared from the state, but NB has stuck it out!)

I think if you are a Gabelli finalist they tell you early.

My daughter is all about the Lululemon options

I was so jealous when a friend of mine was able to purchase lululemon college gear from her girl’s school. So far, we have been underwhelmed with D24’s college merch. ETA: We do love the colors though.

I haven’t read it all,
but Freshman year, son wasn’t loving his dream college: he wasn’t making friends/didn’t have anyone to do fun stuff with,
whereas his high school best friend was having the time of his life at our state college.

Because I believe that DS2022 BELONGS at his college (and its generous financial aid package), I was hesitant to ask him:
ā€œdo you want to transfer to the State college?ā€
My problem with transferring is that he’d be going mainly to BE with his best friend, and the comfort of having this established friendship, not because he fits better at the State college.

My question of transferring was received with just a look of "I’d be an idiot to give up this opportunityā€.
We never discussed transferring again, but focused on how he can make friends at his college.
Added the carrot: I’ll Venmo you $25 for each picture where you’re doing something fun. $100 a picture with new friends doing something fun.

He’s finding his groove as a Sophomore…

I don’t think my DD2024 will have social problems, but each kid is different so I’m trying to prepare myself for whatever glitches/hurdles she may experience with her college.

This just flabbergasted me, Lulu college merch? The LAC that my S24 is attending has champion, lulu, and no name, it was very impressive.

Thank you for this (re Wesleyan Class Profile). Much cleaner / easier read than a CDS.

My daughter made color a column on the spreadsheet! Maroon all the way, but red variations or blue will be accepted lol

USC EA deferred 100% of applicants who weren’t accepted to RD.

Yikes. That doesn’t seem to be a very efficient process. Have they handled it that way in the past?

They started EA last year and did the same thing. This year 41K EA applications and 3k acceptance. Everyone got deferred to RD. I believe they had close to 80k applications total last year. Pretty crazy for $91k/year school.

I believe Georgetown is/has always been that way.

I think I remember hearing about that. At Georgetown it is pretty clear that there isn’t an advantage to applying early as acceptance rates are typically about the same as RD. If you aren’t a recruited athlete (or some other hooked student) I don’t see much of a reason to apply early there (especially as it is restrictive). Georgetown gets many fewer applications than its peer schools because of their separate application and test required (including all tests) policy so maybe for them it isn’t a big deal to send everyone through to RD.
