What I found interesting in our talk with the coach was that yes, he expects recruits to apply EA, however, if the athlete gets in, it doesn’t count towards his number for “supported athletes.” This is not a scholarship sport at Georgetown. Might vary from team to team. Still, I thought that was really interesting.
I really don’t get the logic. Seems like a waste of time for the University to keep having to deal with applicants they know are a NO. And most of all, it would be so much better for applicants to know it’s a NO so they can begin moving on.
My guess is that maybe USC thinks it helps people feel better towards them if they get a deferral and then a rejection vs just go straight to rejection.
If the college ranking system can’t use acceptance rate as one of the metrics, wouldn’t help to reduce this madness?
Eliminate/reduce the incentive to have as many applicants as possible, the colleges will be forced to find ways to reduce the number of applications.
S24’s counselor said 50% of kids applying to USC had zero chance of getting it. With TO and without clear minimum requirements, everyone applies thinking there is a chance.
The question is should there be minimum requirements?
If you apply, you have a chance
But should there be - yes?
But then they’d have less apps.
We can argue here it’s better to have less but most schools don’t think so.
The ones that do go back to test required though - will get less apps - but in this case, they’re acknowledging that TO is not delivering the student quality that’s needed (IMHO). So that overrides the marketing angle.
Same talk at S24 highly comp Cali public. The only EA applicants that got in had strong hooks.
well if they are getting 80K*$70=~$56M in just application fees alone, why bother throttling that spigot
5.6M Still a lot and I agree with your point.
Was a counselor saying that? If so, how are they defining a “hook”?
Hmm. The one kid I know who has been recruited to Georgetown had to have coach support - zero chance of admission otherwise - but that was for lacrosse.
Yup. That’s why I don’t think things will change. The incentive to have more applicants to drive down the acceptance rate is HUGE. Big application fees and higher ranking.
The common app makes it easier to apply to more schools. Since the counselor and teachers have to upload their materials once, they don’t care if you apply to 1 school or 20 schools. They are not going to stop you from applying zero chance schools.
This in turn makes the overall application process more unpredictable. I predict Common App’s 20 max number will increase next few years.
Yes counselor. One was a double legacy, the other’s father is a notable professor.
oops
it’s a recurring revenue that only goes up every year with the shot-gunning approach that has become the standard
I don’t see how the whole thing works/can work. Presumably athletes get in EA. I never heard grumblings of athletes getting deferred. But that is what he said. There must be some missing nuance to the actual behind the doors process.
In S24’s school, a staggering number of kids apply to USC. Last year 170/450 applied with 30 getting acceptance.
This year S24 reports that recruited athletes and legacy kids made in.
Last year about 10 was EA and the rest of RD, so I think S24 has a chance but USC has been dropping fast in his list.
Regardless of when they are admitted, the professor’s student should have full tuition covered. There are many very accomplished double legacy students who are not admitted EA. Many double legacies are not admitted RD. I would say both EA admissions were based on what the student accomplished as opposed to what their relatives did.
Your son has great stats. Did you read what @legacymom1 shared about her experience on the USC forum? It is okay for USC to drop on his list. Just make sure that he has a decent chance to get into the schools that are moving up to replace it. Come April 1, he will have his acceptances in hand and he can re-evaluate what he likes and dislikes about each school.
I have no idea. Just basing that the other 50 kids were all deferred and none had any legacy status. The two also committed immediately which USC does like to keep their yield high. No way to confirm. (also I have 0 skin in the game S24 did not apply EA and USC is very low on the list for RD.)
Actually $5.6M
I made a secret bet with myself by writing it down 3 months ago that the school my daughter chooses/attends will have “gold” as one of its colors. Although not all results are in yet, I think I can say from the remaining schools/current top choices that my odds of winning the bet are about exactly 50/50! (and that’s not a joke about betting against myself).
