Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

He was accepted to UNC EA and it’s now definitely higher than USC. It’s probably an emotional response. We are planning to visit UNC and other East Coast schools during the break this month.
We will see how he feels after the visit.

I think UCLA is still his #1 school. His school had about 25 acceptances last year so I think he has a reasonable chance. His school kids are very heavily STEM and business-focused, so I feel his changes are a little better since he is not majoring in either area.

The process is so uncertain and you never know what’s going to happen. Very stressful for everyone.

That’s great to have an acceptance at a school where he would want to attend. It takes the pressure off. Maybe not for you, but for him. At least he is going somewhere!

My USC student had UCLA as her #1 until mid April. We thought she would be a Bruin but ended up a Trojan. :blue_heart: :yellow_heart::hearts: :yellow_heart:

It takes the pressure off for all of us. S24 is enjoying his last semester, working out more, and taking on a part-time job.

Mom prefers him to attend schools in CA but I want him to go out of state and get out of the Bay Area bubble. We will see.

Goodness this mimics what is happening here! S24 has been hitting the gym regularly, upped his protein etc. As much as I would want him to stay close, I also think it’s better for him to get out of SoCal.

Congratulations on UNC, incredible school!

Just an FYI, but US News has not used acceptance rate in its ranking formula for many years now.

I think something like three of D24’s potential schools have some kind of ORANGE as a main color. She is a fan of oranges (the fruit), but not so much the color orange.

At VT, they told us that the school originally picked their colors (burnt orange and Chicago maroon) because no other school had that combination. Slight pause, then “maybe there was a reason for that”. I was dying.

At Bowling Green, she happily picked a brown based sweatshirt because the other color was…you guessed it, orange.

Also a lot of work for 5.4 million. They have to hire additional readers etc. So is it worth the trouble?

Based on personal experience, coaches of some non-scholarship sports at Georgetown do not expect (or want) recruits to apply EA. Instead, they are asked to apply regular decision but receive the equivalent of a likely letter signed by admissions and the coach.

This is so funny and such a great visual, picturing a small group tour and you unable to hide facial expression as this is said. Hope it played out like that.

When D24 got rejected from Georgia Tech, one of our talking points was, who wants to be a Yellow Jacket anyway? If I never saw a yellow jacket again (the insect), I would be fine with that…many wasps are mostly chill and unfairly maligned, yellow jackets deserve allllll the hate coming their way.

That makes sense. I think he said he hoped kids would apply EA. If they got in, the coach would not have to use his support slot. Its not a risk since Georgetown does not reject EA (I believe).

Most people laughed. I like how they know the colors are terrible, but just lean into it. The student assistants at the open house were wearing the most horrifying outfits, I have partially blocked it out but it was at least as hideous as this…

Georgia Tech was never on D24s radar but there is no way she would have been okay with a yellow jacket mascot. I can’t think of anything that terrifies her more than those insects.

This is why I think the colleges who get these massive amounts of apps really should be staffing their admissions offices accordingly to be able to handle the increase. I’m not sure this is happening, and I think I recall that the Yale podcast explicitly stated this.

As a Georgia resident, I have to quibble with the idea that most wasps are “chill and unfairly maligned.” Paper wasps are common here, and they aren’t as “docile” as the scientists like to tell us! Their stings are more painful (I can testify to this one–they get into your laundry room, even into the washing machine), and they really like to hang out near back decks. I can’t tell you how I killed one that chased us around our deck for a couple of weeks. (No one would talk to me online anymore). Let me just say that I completely believe that wasps recognize human faces. (in other words–GA Tech–no big loss). :honeybee:

Parents of boys, attire question. S24 interviewed for a scholars program that had a zoom for family prior. Most of the boys has on a suit and tie. Mine was in a dress shirt only but told him to put a sport coat on before interview.

He has another coming up where he’ll be interviewed over zoom by a panel of professors. Suit and tie or dress shirt and sport coat? It seems harder for boys in some ways, it’s more obvious when you’re off.

Dress shirt fine IMHO.

These are 17 year olds. There’s a reason Mens Wearhouse and Jos A Bank and other formal stores are gone.

That said, it’s never a problem to overdress.

When I’ve had interviews internally and they’re in jeans and i’m in a suit, they’d make fun of me and I’d say - I’m here to show you the seriousness of my intent.

But I think a button down oxford /dress shirt is just fine.

It won’t be why you won’t win.

Comfortable but professional.

Good luck.

Not a parent of a boy, but based on what D24 saw at her merit scholarship competition weekend, suit and tie. Male professors at the event were also wearing a suit and tie.
