Northeast parent here (NYC). Rice is well known in the city from what I can tell (tech and finance parents–though I’m not in those industries! Missed that memo!)–excellent reputation and bunch of high-achieving kids applied there in the cohort I know. Kids seem to think Texas is fun?
I believe I mentioned a bunch of times above my S24 almost ED2ed there. It is very much worth being excited about!
On a completely different note:
When your D24 decides to join the JV Golf team as a senior, just say No.
D26: Can you pick me up?
Me: Where’s your sister?
D26: She’s lost.
Me: Isn’t she at golf practice?
D26: Yes. She’s lost on the golf course. She has no idea where she is. It’s just grass everywhere.
D24 is a NMF.
Congratulations to your son on his great California acceptances!
My proposal is that in order to avoid this problem, golf courses should scatter around numbered posts and flags and such, and then hand out little maps . . . .
These kids should at least know how to use google maps!!!
She did use Google Maps.
Otherwise, she’d probably still be there and we’d have to start a search party.
Thank you - we are looking at different factors including job placements. We are OOS for UIUC. Being NMS, going to state flagship is obviously the cheapest option. The thing is I’m not sure if my DS is 100% sold on ChemE yet. And sometimes it’s hard to place a value now on connections/environments where you study with other like minded high achieving students.
Admitted student days/open houses are complete for S24! So glad to have this season behind us. Now he can just focus on doing well and staying motivated for the remainder of his senior year.
@pathandpurpose Congrats to your kiddo. Earned. Saw your note regarding UCSD and ERC not being an ideal fit for STEM. Was curious what research / background you have on that. Feel free to DM if better.
Why do I ask? In a similar boat with S24. He was ecstatic (over the moon) with the engineering major he was offered but a second read of the offer and then seeing ERC was deflating. Reading reddit and other sites has not help. We have engaged the college for more background (reality check) but also looking for other informed opinions.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks - and to yours as well! I wasn’t able to DM you @Nat3755
Essentially ERC and Revelle were S24’s last ranked colleges because of the GE requirement of higher levels of HS Language Other Than English / proficiency test. S24 only took 3 years of Latin in HS. (Some other UC campuses and the other UCSD residential colleges indicate that 3 years of HS LOTE satisfy the GE requirement as described in further detail in this thread.)
This was on top of S24’s initial reaction to our tour, when he thought UCSD was just too big and he didn’t see himself fitting in there relative to the other campuses we had visited. (His reaction to the tour was really a surprise, because I had hoped it would be his top choice!)
Neither of these may be an issue for your S24… Wishing him and you best of luck!
Edited to add @Nat3755 in response.
Alex, I’ll take College Decision Fun for $1,000.
Answer: this student is the most disinterested in fun admissions gifts.
Question: Who is D24?
That is correct for $1,000.
D24 received two admissions gift packages yesterday, from Hamilton and Mount Holyoke, along with her voters registration card. I brought all three to her in her room and then went about my day. An hour or so later I popped my head in and asked what she got. Well, she opened the voters registration and asked me if it was supposed to be just a paper “card.”
The two college packs were sitting on her bed unopened.
Who is this child? From what womb did she come?
If it makes you feel better, this is how decisions went down.
Me: (hours after results) “well, did you get in?” Him: “oh, did it come out?”
He knows where he is going and is not even curious about the packages that come in. They are left forgotten in a corner. I open them myself
Thanks. Appreciate the link to the LOTE thread. Interesting read; another layer to consider when looking at offers even between UCs.
I feel like there is going to be a big tie at the top for this distinction.
There was no way NiceUnparticularMom and I were going to leave that sweet Haverford package unopened, including because we both have a long-established love for black squirrels. Now the only question is which parent gets to keep the black squirrel socks . . . who are we kidding, it is Mom.
I got -
Me how what does your portal updates say?
D24 oh i am not getting in so just open them yourself
Me (for some of them) confetti!!
D24 no - did you video it?? Does it replay??
I would have checked but was so afraid to accidentally steal the confetti.
What is everyone doing for graduation gifts?
We plan on paying for a senior trip though DS and mates can’t seem to get their act together on planning it. And while I’m the family travel agent, I have no intention in helping them figure this out. We also got him a nice watch, so he has something tangible.
We’re getting D24 a new phone for graduation. The one she currently has is pretty old and doesn’t have 5G. And we are paying for her 5 day choir trip to NYC that occurs shortly after Memorial Day.
And we’re paying for college. I think that’s a pretty big gift. LOL.
We’re doing a big road trip that he got to pick the route for (Canadian cities!), and there will likely be pooling of his money, our money, and graduation money from relatives to get a new horn.
