We’ll be there! If you have time, go to Bori (It’s about 25 minutes from Rice). The food is excellent and has a mini art museum in the restaurant that displays the works of a local Korean painter.
It’s a huge change. S24 turned 18 last fall and as soon as midnight hit, his entire online health portal disappeared from my desktop. On the positive, he has been really good about making his own appointments, calling for referrals when needed, getting himself to and from appointments, etc. He will be well prepared for college for sure. But it is a little unnerving not having access to his medical stuff.
Thank you - It does look like a fun day! Super quick visit - flying into hobby evening before and flight out is leaving at 7pm after admitted student day. I was debating not getting a car and just ubering to save a little time. We are staying at marriott right near campus. Do you think we will get enough feel for area just walking around (and ubering to dinner thursday night)?
Depends.
If he mostly cares about the school and the area surrounding it, yes. If he’s interested in getting a vibe of the city, then an extra day does help. Houston is vast.
When we visited Vanderbilt, we went there for 2 days just to get a feel for Nashville (I had been there before but was D24’s first time) and did a self guided pre-tour prior to the half day official event. Vanderbilt is really nice.
FYI - the area around Hobby isn’t great (Southeast Houston). I think the majority of people who fly there are folks on Southwest. You wont be impressed until you get closer to campus.
This is my S24. Not sure how he will manage
No plan for that as D20, D23 and S24 have been doing their own laundry since 5th/6th grade.
However, I’m still picking out and buying their clothes because “you know what we like to wear and we don’t like to go shopping”. Trying to figure out when I cut them off of this service, as Personal Shopper in Perpetuity was never my plan.
So daughter is starting to get excited (though she still hasn’t picked a school). She started a Google doc for dorm items and was VERY specific, right down to the exact type of tide pen and spare toilet paper brand
Or, you can start charging them and turn this into your part-time retirement gig…there’s even a CC thread dedicated to that!
Ha! Please share a link.
Here you go!
I was going to suggest this might happen, he may fall in love with one of the first two and call off the second trip. Best laid plans and all that . . .
I’d have to enjoy the work more than I do. This is truly a labor of love…and not love of shopping (the apples didn’t fall far from the tree).
Rice undergrad Bio E is amazing. The program is very rigorous, and there is definitely an advantage to being next to the largest global medical research campus in the world. Rice collaborates with many of the research programs at TMC. One of my sons is a '23 grad. The whole university is excellent, and the facilities are great. Believe it or not, Houston’s Museum District is a great place to live and study! That campus can’t be beat!
Rice is amazing. One of my sons is a '23 grad. My HS senior was admitted, and it is in his top three only because his brother loved it so much, and he also loves it, but he is focused on film/screenwriting and was accepted at USC-Cinematic Arts and UT Austin RTF Plan2 so that it will be a tough decision. The whole university is excellent, and the facilities are great. Believe it or not, Houston’s Museum District is a great place to live and study! That campus can’t be beat! And Houston is the most diverse city in the country and has the best food scene.
We also loved our visit to Vassar! The campus is gorgeous, and we visited on a day when they had their farmer’s market, which was fun. As others have said, definitely a “fit” school, but it fit D24 very well.
OK, missing another school day is a no-go, but . . .
We can actually double-up WUSTL weekend by flying STL to EWR that Saturday night (eliminating a DTW connection–ha, take that, haters!), renting and driving a car up (I’m sure that will be safe after a long day), Vassar Admitted Students day Sunday, drive down to LGA that same night (2/3 NYC airport badge achieved) for direct flight back (no, not through DTW), third night flight in three days (four counting the connection on the front end).
Actually costs less to do it that way versus a separate trip to Vassar thanks to saving a flight leg and a cheaper hotel in Poughkeepsie than STL.
Downsides include I am not sure I have allowed any time for, say, meals. Oh, and it is completely insane. Wheeeeee!!!
What happens if you get a flat tire driving through Queens. Did you factor that in?
or as we stumbled into last year, airplane mechanical difficulties leading to an overnight stay in an airport hotel (not located on airport as that would be too convenient but rather a shuttle bus ride away), starting the domino effect of throwing the schedule for rest of the plan into more chaos…hopefully all goes smoothly for you! Many fantastic options is hard to navigate but a good “problem” to have.
We all know LaGuardia and Newark never get flight delays.
I’ve also started preparing myself that there is a decent likelihood after all this craziness traveling that he comes out with no additional clarity and likes all options. Honestly torn as to whether that’s a good or a bad thing.
