Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

It’s kind of a fun train ride in from NNJ - you go through the Meadowlands, which are shockingly pretty.

Ok. I guess my post on the alternative minimum tax was flagged so Ill edit the post and remove the tax information.

Just an observation I thought I share since I travel throughout the country, speaking on tax strategies at conferences.

More like there are a lot of people in NY and NJ.

Thanks for the info. This makes me feel better about this drive.

Thanks this means we either start early in the day so we have enough light and buffer in case we get lost. Seriously considering flying from NYC to Cleveland also if we take a train to NYC.

We are from SF bay area and so used to SF traffic (though we don’t go that frequently).

Tell me about it feel like at CA we are always paying highest taxes no matter what law passes.

D24 came up with her desired graduation gift: a $200 two-serving espresso machine! I knew she would figure out what she truly coveted!

Easy peasy: from the Grand Central walk two blocks to Bryant Park and take an F line to Queens to the Jackson Hights-Roosevelt Ave stop, then transfer to a free Q70 bus. Total cost: $2.90 p/p.

Thanks! Of course after I thought about it, I decided to book a driver to Flushing. It only cost me an extra $188.40. Oops.

On the topic of gifts, my D22 absolutely loves having a mini-projector. Its used regularly by her group of friends.

This reminds me of a friend’s story. Her parents were driving from Chicago to Buffalo to see the grandkids in an evening stage performance. Not long before the performance, they called my friend because they hadn’t hit Buffalo yet and didn’t know where they were.

She managed to help them figure out they were somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania. I-80 and I-90 are the same from Chicago-Cleveland. They didn’t notice the roads diverged outside Cleveland, so instead of staying on I-90 to hug the lake, they went for southeast on I-80.

We just marveled at how they drove for a couple hundred miles without noticing anything amiss.

Ok, return flights from Dallas back to AZ have now been procured for move-in weekend! I’m already feeling emotional about all of this. I’m gonna be a basket case on move in day!

This was decades ago but I have an uncle who was on a long drive with a friend in the middle of the night. The agreement was one would sleep while the other drove, and they would swap half way after stopping for gas.

Well, the uncle got in the driver seat, left the gas station in the wrong direction, and didn’t realize the mistake until he was almost back home, hours later.

So I do not directly negotiate with that particular stakeholder, but I am led to believe she was entirely in favor of minimizing time out of state for visits.

What I do not know is whether she has yet checked the break schedule at Vassar to see if she would find it suitable for her plans. It looks pretty solid to me, though–longish October break, Thanksgiving break, long winter break, long spring break, earlyish stop in May.

Come to think of it, maybe there is more to the renewed interest in Vassar than I know . . . .

Edit: The wheels are actually turning now. I am thinking of Vassar as not particularly convenient due to lack of a direct flight to a close airport, but it is easily the most drivable. And first-years can have cars. Hmmmm.

Actually, it is easy to get into nyc and grand central station from all 3 of the ny airports and to hop on a metro north train to Poughkeepsie. These are commuter trains with frequent service.

Not sure where you’re coming from, but I would be surprised if you can’t find flight options to one of the 3 airports (jfk, ewr, lga).

Not letting you drop this ball so soon!

I think the implication of this aside in full was that drivability might be the reason behind @NiceUnparticularMan ‘s kid’s renewed interest in Vassar, especially as it relates to the kid’s significant other.
