Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Maybe there is a fabulous SPA at every location

I ahve no idea, but just be sure to check your student’s AP exam schedule as well as the college’s academic calendar.

No APs here

But point taken @birdie3 about the timing vis a vis student schedules. Not to mention schools that end their school years outright in early/mid May.

Hahaha! My kids would have probably texted me from the kitchen.

I love the idea of a post-college-drop-off trip, and my husband and I have been discussing some options. An engaging trip seems like just the ticket to take our minds off missing S24. Unfortunately, D27 starts school not long after drop-off, so a longer international trip is not an option. She is also neurodiverse and is not always the easiest or most enthusiastic travel companion.

S24 applied to Pomona, and we had already decided that should he end up going there we’d spend the day or two after drop-off at Disneyland. It seemed like the perfect mindless yet completely absorbing distraction. And D27 would have been a fan.

Maine, where S24 is headed, is beautiful in late August. But we know it well, and I suspect that a novel destination may be a better distraction. My husband and I had a very fun couple of days in Maine a few years ago when the kids were in camp: we did an organized bike tour of the Portland lighthouses, and an ocean kayak adventure further up the coast. I doubt that D27 would love either activity though. But something organized and active may be the right approach. (Just thinking out loud here.)

At least one of mine would have just eaten it without asking and then given me a blank look when I asked where the sub went. Wait, make that a meatball sub because I am pretty sure that he never lets eggplant cross his lips voluntarily.

Perhaps Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island? Alternatively, maybe Quebec?

I was coming to say Quebec City would be a great option.

Thirded. QC is awesome. You can also tack on possibly a multi-day trip up the river. Ile d’Orleans, Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Baie-Saint-Paul, Les Eboulements, La Malbaie, Notre-Dame-du-Portage, Tadoussac . . . .

We have been considering Nova Scotia and PEI - we have never been. One challenge is distance. We will have our car, so a road trip would be ideal. But the drive to NS or PEI is long. D27 is a fan of Anne of Green Gables though, so that’s a bonus.

Quebec is beautiful. We took a driving trip from northern NH to La Malbaie (long drive)stayed there for several days. Then to Quebec City for a couple of nights. Spent one night in southern Quebec (can’t remember the name of the town somewhere near Mt. Bromont). The final stop was one night in Vermont. We live in MA. One of my favorite vacations.

My DC got accepted to Colby ED2 as well! After being rejected from their ED1, this was amazing news!

This suggestion brings back memories. I did that trip with my father when he brought me to my first year of college from Europe. We flew into Montreal and then eventually made our way down to New England.

We also did a Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island trip before we were married over 30 years ago. We loved that trip too but we took the old car ferry from Portland to St John ?? then drove. I was so sick on that ferry. I think they have restarted CAT ferry from Bar Harbor though. So maybe another option.

This was definitely a text conversation. I’ve gotten texts like ā€œShould I ED to hereā€ so I thought his in person visit to talk was serious.

Cool congrats! Just want to clarify though - are you saying they applied ED1 to Colby, were rejected (as opposed to deferred), then applied ED2 to Colby and were accepted?

I ask because I didn’t know you could ED2 after being rejected ED1.

ETA: never mind I now understand what ā€˜their’ was modifying

We drove to NS and PEI for our honeymoon. We took a car ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth. We did drive back (PEI bridge to NB, then down by the Bay of Fundy and into ME).

It was nice because even though the drive back was about 2 hours longer, since we took the ferry over the majority of the trip was new scenery.

Wow, that’s awesome! Congrats!

My friend’s son is a junior at the Univ of SC in the Honors program and loves it! They have been impressed with the school.

When D23 and 24 are off, thinking cape or Nantucket with S36twins, much better in September. Then spring semester somewhere much more exciting or international. Easy to pull littles out of school.
