Senior Assassins (I really wish they would change the name) is in full swing at S24’s school.
This morning I noticed a car parked on the side of our house at 7 AM, and then spotted two teens waiting in the bushes for my son. I told my son and he said “Oh yeah that’s probably my assassin. I knew they would come early at the house since they probably got the intel that I am going for my target early.”
He managed to evade them. His buddy picked him up directly from the garage (going inside the house is off limits for the assassin). But then I saw the two teens follow them in their car. All of this before 8 AM.
It’s so thrilling and fun but I hope they stick to the rules and stay safe.
Oh and it was interesting to explain this to my elderly Asian parents why two teens were hiding in the bushes at 7 AM near our house.
My daughter got ambushed returning home from the gym last night after dark. What is crazy is that I saw the kids walking near our house 2 hours before, but she wasn’t home. I think they actually staked out in the woods across the street for hours. That’s dedication. I happen to have opened the door when I saw her parking her car and as she was getting out, I saw one kid come running from the woods across the street. Luckily, my girl has quick reflexes and as soon as I yelled “watch out!”, she turned, water gun in hand and nailed him. It was actually impressive. So, she lives another day.
Senior assassins lasted about 24 hours in our town until the school cancelled it because the police were called for someone with a gun, this is by far the dumbest senior activity and very tone deaf. My husband saw someone hovering"with a gun" across the street from our house where another senior lives yesterday and was pretty concerned.
The whole senior assassins game sounds like fun but I’d be lying if I said it’s something I wish our school participated in, honestly I wouldn’t be able to sleep. You just can’t help but think how tragic the situation could get if things got out of control. In our state, guns are a real thing that people carry and if someone misinterprets a playful situation and thinks they need to jump in to protect someone, well I can totally see it all going south pretty quickly.
S24 and his teammate had a great time doing senior assassin. All the teams were creative, persistent and hilarious - the team names they gave themselves alone were worth it.
Our HS does senior assassins, but it’s not officially recognized/approved by the administration. D24 hasn’t been hit/tagged yet because we live a good 30 min drive from school.
It’s heavily discouraged at our school, I know some kids still did it last year, I haven’t seen anything this year.
My kid was fully on board for Cal Poly SLO and admitted student day sealed the deal. They are ready to cancel the other acceptances but I’m just curious to see the financial aid at the UCs as my older kid got some unexpected UC grants. It wouldn’t change the decision though so I guess I should just let them cancel.
Anyone else nervous about hitting the withdraw button? We are thrilled with daughters choice but it’s still hard to pull the apps from the other top contenders, and a bit scary! Like what if there’s a fire or something?
S24 has a Spring Admit offer from a school and he has until mid- November to accept. There is only the tiniest possible chance he would even consider taking it (it’s further away, more expensive, not direct admit to his major and ranked lower). However, if for some reason his university completely collapsed out of the blue in the middle of Fall semester, he could just seamlessly show up at his Spring Admit school like it was no big deal.
I am aware this is an insane fact pattern. And yet I like the idea of having that Spring Admit hanging out there.
Nope. She has committed to Vanderbilt. She did receive the woodruff scholarship at Emory but she strongly felt this was a much better fit. How about your?
It is stressful, especially for parents. I’ve laid out some rules for my son in addition to his school’s very strict rules. They are have been told to use water bottles, mist sprayers and those fluorescent water guns that cannot be mistaken for real ones.
I’m looking to know what SAI means in respect to what type of school grants and federal financial aid my daughter may qualify for. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t qualify for Pell grant and I heard that the maximum federal loan amount she can get for a year is $$5500. So does that mean that we have to take private loans for the rest of the money? That would be a lot if true. Just don’t think we will qualify for any or much need aid based on an 18000 SAI
Run the schools’ net price calculators. An 18000 SAI won’t qualify for Pell grant, but would likely qualify for need based aid at many schools that give need based aid (given typical family circumstances.) Some schools will meet full need (tend to be highly selective), others won’t. Some won’t give any need based aid, for example some public colleges for OOS students.
Big picture, set a budget for college and discuss that with your kid(s). I assume you don’t have a Class of 2024 student?
You could start a thread to get more eyes on your situation/questions.
An SAI of 18000 means that the fed gov’t has determined that your household could afford to contribute about $18,000/yr to your student’s college expenses.
