Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

That does sound really stressful. Unfortunately, it is the position of way too many families across the country as they look towards college, and has been even before the FAFSA changes implemented this year.

It sounds like you were able to do a commendable job finding schools that will work for your twins, and the process you went through might have valuable insights for future families, I hope you might be willing to share going forward.

Other than agreeing he is targeting accepting somewhere the day before (knock on wood), officially no.

But you will be able to knock me over with a feather if it isn’t WUSTL. Like, we had a brief conversation about waitlists, the gist of which is that probably Carleton would be a better choice for him than his waitlist options (Amherst and Middlebury), and he is leaning to going the university over LAC route even with Carleton as an option, so why cling to waitlists? And of course there is a premise in there which seems rather decisive . . . .

With all the recent admitted student days and hemming and hawing about certain schools, I was just thinking that it’d be awfully weird to get an offer to come off the waitlist after finally making a decision. D24 only has one viable waitlist option (Pomona) and in no sense is she proceeding like Pomona is going to happen. But that’s what what would make it so weird. Spending so much time focusing on two or three schools, making a decision, and then shortly thereafter getting a wholly new option.

I’m getting a little antsy as S does not seem to feel any particular sense of urgency with the deadline looming (perhaps my antsiness is slightly higher because 3 of his top 4 either have extended the deadline to May 15 or have said they will extend it if asked, and I really don’t want him to take advantage of that!) The only waitlist spot he accepted is at Macalester, and there’s no way he’d go there if he came off the waitlist, so he probably should tell them that…but I’m still irrationally annoyed about how Macalester waitlisted him and then continues to ask me for money regularly as the parent of an alum, so I haven’t pressed the issue :joy:

ETA: also, the horn prof from UGA is visiting his wind symphony two days before the deadline, and I sort of want him to decide before that lest he be swayed by that at the last second. I’ve made no secret of the fact that UGA’s the one I have the most reservations about for him, but, hey, at least he’d be close if he went there!

Congrats! She will be so happy there.

So random, but RIGHT NOW this Cathedral of Learning live cam is showing a Peregrine falcon feeding prey to her babies:

Feels like some sort of metaphor to me . . . .

Edit: And now she is lying on top of them, which probably looks like smothering but is surely actually taking good care of them . . . .

OK, enough of that!

On May 1, we parents are doing the traditional locker decoration at our school. The ritual includes the colors and logo of the student’s college choice. I’m wondering if due to all the delays this year, some parents will decorate with two different college logos! :joy:

As of now, we would have to do that.

Hopefully not also a metaphor :joy:

What kind of monster would not?

Literally just watched the adult feeding prey again on the Cal cam (edit: now is lying on top of them, must be a falcon thing).

In fact it is really fun for me to see such similar scenes playing out across the country . . . wait, I was supposed to be done with the obvious metaphors, sorry!

I’d like to believe not, but I will also refrain from asking my kids what they think.

Now, if I see a falcon mixing a cocktail, then that is one I will be willing to concede.

No one here is talking about the liberated zones in the colleges. Does the situation or trending on this in your schools affect your final decision?

That’s a party trick I’d pay to see. BTW if you have not, you absolutely must read the martini walkabout article from The New Yorker.

I posted this on another thread about Swarthmore. Currently, how both students and faculty/ administrators are handling this makes me love the school even more.

It really stresses me out when the chicks are left totally alone. Like right now! {parents are back! Whew!]

It’s official! C24 has accepted a spot at Oberlin. Within literal minutes of arriving to admitted students day, they had texted me that they wanted to attend, and they just got happier as the day progressed. They say the campus feels like home to them, and they’re (figuratively) drooling over the many, many classes they want to take across two majors.

This process ended up so differently than were it started, but I think C24 has found the right school for them. I’m so happy and grateful.

I love it when students are excited by the idea of taking specific classes at their college of choice.

So exciting to see college decisions being made! It was such a relief for D24 (and me) when she finally made the decision and we could fully lean in to the last bit of high school.

Prom is this weekend, her first graduation (associate’s) is in a couple of weeks, and classes are in their final push (AP exam time ends the semester). She got her CPR certification this week (most summer camp jobs seem to want that). She now has her own bank account and working on getting her first adult passport.

I am keeping busy (can’t think about her leaving :face_with_spiral_eyes:) with the garden and some home improvement projects, and popping in to CC to see how everyone is doing. College decision announcements, I loves 'em.
