Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Mine has Calc BC. They are making kids get to school at 6:30 for a 8am start :flushed:. They said there are just so many taking the tests that they need extra time for registration. Not exactly the best way to go into the test. Think she is burned out and doesn’t feel like she’s adequately prepared. She studied for a while yesterday but then opted to go to friend’s lake house. We’ll see how long she lasts today.

I love this rephrase, ā€œdeferred final decision,ā€ I’m going to share that with S24.

There is so much doom and gloom and negativity about WL on these forums, if they didn’t want you from the beginning type of comments. I’ve always thought it’s just another decision. Don’t make it bigger or worse than it is, no need to attach salty emotions to it.

He is still waiting on his final decision from one school, and would consider going for sure if he got in.

Both of my two oldest got off of waitlists (and one is attending that school), so I’ve always felt like people overstate how unlikely it is.

My two cents is it is important to know how capricious it is. Like, even the colleges themselves tend not to know what their RD yield will actually look like, so they could end up taking a lot off their waitlist, or no one, or anything in between. And then who they take depends on exactly what they need, including as to budget, and for that matter waitlist yield is also hard to predict (hence all the ā€œare you really still interestedā€ emails), and so on.

But as long as you are OK with all that, I agree it is fine to see it as not a final answer.

That stinks
I would be burned out too!

FWIW, as a western US person, originally from the east coast, I would take Pomona! My kids both considered the Claremont colleges as well as colleges back east; one ended up in the Bay Area and the other will be in Colorado. Both were happy to stay in the west, in either the same time zone or one time zone over, a 2-3 hour non-stop flight for each of them. As a parent, I do feel it makes a difference having them 800 and 1400 miles away, rather than 3700 miles away, although that might be mostly psychological.

When people say it’s unlikely:

  1. They are assessing the stats from a school from the CDS.

  2. They are trying to keep someone from getting hopes up - because statistically, if you look at most schools, it’s unlikely. And many have need - and many WL are need aware - so that’s a double situation.

Yes, of course some get off and some off multiple if they’re the creme de la creme but for every story you are hearing - there still are schools with thousands on the wait list that percentage wise, few are getting off.

#2 is critical as many will not only be disappointed but perhaps also not give full attention to the one where they end up with during the interim time until they hear from a WL school.

Of course, everyone hopes everyone gets off a WL - but at least based on the data reported, the far majority won’t have a happy ending. So it’s better to stay grounded and then celebrate if it happens (in my opinion).

It doesn’t change the fact - and it was W&M who coined the you’ve not been accepted and the person at UGA (or was it Ga Tech who just talked about wait list noted similar) - when they say it it’s ok but when others say it, it’s not  It is a hedge for the school - keep you interested enough in case they fall short.

Congratulations on your kids results. When people say it’s a rejection they clearly are overstating it. Your kids are proofšŸ˜€

Congrats! Which major did your D24 apply to?

D24 has AP Calc tomorrow and AP Physics C on Tuesday, although there’s a chance we’ll blow it off for a hasty visit to Pomona.

Studio art, although there’s a reasonable chance at a second major.

First graduation down, music school, it was lovely how they did a real graduation wtih the over 80 seniors, caps, gowns, diploma covers, program, and followed by his last HS age orchestra concert. It was really a lovely day! He spent six years of saturdays there and it was definitely worth it in the end, even looking back on the many things he (and we gave up!)

The Costco near us has Woozoo fans on sale for $37.99. Wanted to mention it in case anybody needs one for their kid in the dorms this fall. Amazon has them for $50.99 right now so the Costco price is a good deal!

I’ve started deep cleaning the house and decluttering (aka shoving things into drawers, haha) in preparation for graduation day on Thursday. There’s nothing like company coming over to get me to organize my house.

Ha, ordered one already, not sure if that was the right choice and hate to be on a tiktok trend, but NE summer with no air conditioning sounds brutal!

In other news, we got a survey from Southwestern Univ this past week. It was pretty much asking why you didn’t enroll. What I found interesting was the survey also had a list of colleges (almost all in Tx) which they asked if you were enrolling in one of those. Plus there was a place to enter a different college that wasn’t on the list. D24’s college was on that list.

I thought that Southwestern’s admissions dept was great and if it weren’t for the higher price tag and Austin College’s PA program, D24 had Southwestern as a close #2 school. I loved Georgetown, TX. Love the school. D24 loved it too. I wish that D26 would consider applying but she right now is really interested in a couple of specific majors at Univ of Arizona so I don’t think kid #2 will end up there…unless they start Cyber Operations or Intelligence & Info Ops degrees, which is unlikely.

We got one for D26 to use next to her bed and that little fan is really awesome!

Picked up one of the Woozoo fans today along with some really soft towels at Costco for 8$ a piece. S24 cracked me up-he wanted to take the 4ft tall tower fan that he currently uses. He will try the Woozoo in its place the next few weeks. We live 2000 mi away and trying to be mindful of move out and storage issues. Things are getting real.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing and wise mama’s here.:bouquet:

The Woozoo is really great. I thought I would test it out first in my sewing room and I think I may be stealing it

We got both the tower fan and the WooZoo for my S23 last year and he needed both in Aug & September. :grimacing:

Almost forgot that senior sunset is tomorrow evening & D24 is going to it. We also advised D24 to consider taking $500 and getting a secured credit card when she turns 18 so she can start to build a credit score.

Austin College has assigned incoming freshmen some mandatory online training sessions on topics like drug abuse, mental health, and sexual assault. Each session/module is about 30 min long and are due 7/1. D24 is planning to get it out of the way this month before her choir & graduation trips happen.
