Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

I ate at the new dining hall - it was fine. Definitely not Swat’s best feature. @Swimmom2006 I agree that better than the BS dining hall. (and that is also fine)

Yes, friends of D24 have gotten off waitlists at Columbia, Cornell, Barnard and NYU

Things just got complicated, S24 is committed to Notre Dame as a Glynn scholar, group of 100 students taking 12-15 person seminar classes, research, summer programs, chemistry tutors for pre-med, private super nice study area where they treat them daily. We absolutely love everything about the school thus far, it’s been so warm, and exceeded all expectations.

Now today, off the waitlist at Brown.

Yale (deferred to rejected) and Brown were favorites from the outset, he loved Brown most on tours. Since committing to ND though and his personality, he moves on and is happy with what is and is very loyal. I honestly don’t know if he can put himself back in time to how he felt. This is going to be hard. Any tips?

Go to Notre Dame.

So DS just sent a video of the senior prank. They brought a llama onto campus for a “round up”. Joke was on them the llama got loose.

No tips, but I can totally relate. Getting off a waitlist is great, but it puts the kid (and the parent by extension) in a strange space after having already literally and mentally committed to a given school. The short-fuse deadline to consider and accept the offer does not help.

That said, ND or Brown is a pretty enviable dilemma.

Wow! Great problem to have. If he is excited about Notre Dame, stick with ND.

When does he have to decide by?

From how you describe the program at ND, it sounds like a great place to be.

He has a week, thankful for that.

I listed the pros of ND in my post. The pros to Brown are open curriculum, a tad more “academicky” feeling which he likes, open curriculum, grade inflation, brown ems so he can continue hopefully as he’s certified EMT, plus nearby hospital. Was his favorite tour on our college trip last year.

If he’s premed…then Brown is the better option…just one random persons opinion on the internet.

what about the student body/culture/vibe? They seem to be really different at Brown vs. ND. Congrats to him!

Yes, different but a fit for both. Many would have a strong preference I realize and that may seem strange to some, but he’s a bit of a mix of both the vibes. He likes the tight community and care for others at ND but prefers the diversity of Brown.

We’re heading up for a visit this weekend. I want him to get on campus again before making this big decision.

Pat yourself on the shoulder and stay the course? He can’t go wrong here and just because it was his favorite school at one point it doesn’t mean it has to be his favorite now. I think sometimes the “idea of the right/best school” gets in the way. My kids evolved so much during the process. If ND feels good now, he should run with it!

Both ND and Brown are incredible options to have, and the program at ND sounds amazing and hard to pass up.

I’ll play a little devil’s advocate here. It can be demoralizing to be waitlisted to a school that one really wanted to attend. And it’s wonderful that your child has moved on and embraced ND, especially the program offered.

But I might recommend that you all consider what decision your child would have made 2 weeks ago if your child had been admitted to Brown AND accepted to this ND program. Would it indeed have been Brown then?

While feelings might be a little raw and hurt bc of the waitlist, those feelings will hopefully wear off if Brown is really the right fit.

After the hurt has worn off, where will your child like to graduate from?

Interesting perspective I am going to share tomorrow with him and super helpful as I hadn’t attacked this angle.

If both came through on decision day he would have chosen Brown. He fell in love with ND after admit days, he liked it before but first impression was wanted more diversity. He has cousins that attended so also has some familiarity.

Good part for him though is that he has no ego attached to being waitlisted so he doesn’t feel inferior so not tackling that issue thankfully. I do think it’s interesting to think about had they both been at same time he would have chosen other though!

I think this is the correct way to look at it. Last year S23 got off a waitlist in late May. He really didn’t want to revisit his original decision, but acknowledged that he would have chosen the waitlist school if he’d had that choice originally (it was cheaper, closer to home and a better climate). So he switched, and it’s definitely been the right decision.

He got a nice personal touch first thing this morning from the AO. She said she remembers him well from her high school visit and how struck she was with his personal statement on his EMT experiences and would love to see him be a part of Brown EMS. She’s calling him now as I write this, ahh!

Yes; UCLA and Barnard from our school. I expect many more. The feeling at the High School is that this year the admissions cycle has been particularly brutal with many surprising upsets compared to previous years. I hope that more waitlist action happens to soften the blows.

Got a parent newsletter from D24’s school. They’re doing a room preview event on 6/29, where you can tour your assigned room and residence hall if you want. We won’t be attending that since it’s quite a distance for us to travel. There was also reminder for D24 to join the college’s ZeeMee community on the ZeeMee mobile app in order to connect w/other new students over the summer. I’ve already tried encouraging her to consider this, but this is a kid who just 3 months ago got an Instagram account, so the odds are low that she’s going to use ZeeMee very much if at all.

The Child still needs to do the online french placement exam before 5/28.

It’s nice to have options! both of them are great schools so he can’t go wrong with either choice.
