Post-graduation social life for The Child continues. She’s headed to dinner tomorrow w/the family of 1 of her BFFs. Then there’s a get-together at a park on Saturday at The-Child-doesn’t-know-what-time w/all of the BFFs (I think there’s 5 or 6 of them not including my kid).
The Child is irritated by the requirement that she pick up Little Sister from school at 12:30 pm this week. Apparently, it interrupts her lounging-in-bed-watching-Youtube time. Life is hard, you know.
My ‘21 kid has her own bank debit card and is an authorized user on our credit card. We have a chat each quarter about what she pays on her own vs approved parent card expenses. (Changes based on her paid work which is less during heavy course load quarters).
I recommend putting the cards on their Apple Pay and they should have a Venmo acct. to split costs with friends and roommates.
Upper school awards at my son’s school yesterday, and they have a sweet tradition where, at the beginning of the year, seniors are paired with “First Grade Buddies.” The First Grade Buddies escorted their seniors to the stage and it was very sweet. Today was a special trip to the zoo for seniors and their buddies.
I head to my daughter’s school Friday and am very much looking forward to being with her and her sweet friends. Also looking forward to having her home.
Son picked his dorm room today and is in a suite with three other guys he seems to like via online interactions. I think having roommates is making it all real. He meets with his advisor virtually to register for classes tomorrow!
Current big stress is we are hosting a grad party at our house Monday, but the house is a bit of a mess due to a required renovation of two upstairs bathrooms due to a leak . . . it’s almost finished, and I have painters there today. Crossing fingers for good weather and a mostly outside party
So now that APs are over, it’s CLEP
Season for S24.
We think (!) he can take precalc provided he does it now before he registers for classes at UMd. Their site says they don’t take math CLEPs once you are matriculated and we asked several people and got different answers.
Depending on AP’s, he might have to take Micro also… though he’s not yet aware of that . Every CLEP and AP is potentially thousands of bucks in credits. Like a high-paying summer job.
Side note: My favorite graduation gift for my kids’ good friends is TSA Pre-check! I give them cash to cover the cost and print out the instructions. Obviously it’s up to them to get enrolled, but it’s a great gift!
Parent of a college freshman here- if you’re looking for a unique HS graduation gift, especially for an engineering/physics kid, check out the websites that create custom Lego mosaics. We did one with my son’s college mascot on it and he hung it in his dorm room- it looked really cool. He’s a huge Lego fan and it was the perfect gift for him!
Last day of regular school here. S24 - to his surprise - was awarded the seal of bi-literacy in Spanish which will go on his transcript. Was really happy for him!
D24s graduation is June 2, but she’s essentially done after this week - senior finals next week and she doesn’t have any. Meanwhile D28 who is in our district school goes until June 17. O, the humanity!
My family had a bug go through that thankfully spared D24, as this is a busy week for seniors - prom, senior prank, senior skip day, art show, graduate showcase, and today is decision day where they get to wear their college swag. It’s hard to believe it’s almost over!
I find myself in total denial – graduation is two weeks from tomorrow, but it still feels like it’s months away. I know C24 is going to college, I have fully internalized that fact. But somehow my brain is refusing to believe that that means they won’t be going to high school. Or living here. It’s kind of a weird headspace to be in.
I think the reality of all this is hitting me harder than NiceUnparticularMom so far. I wonder if it is because I am still playing a support role for filling out forms and such, planning move-in logistics, and so on. In any event, good for her as far as I am concerned.
