Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

I think UM men’s and women’s teams are both here! My daughter plays for Stanford Superfly. If you have a chance to attend this tournament, I highly recommend!

Yeah sometimes they opt to stay with friends, which ends up being more fun than “boring college” stuff

That’s awesome! And yes men’s (20th seed) had an upset win in their first game, and the second game was called due to lightning (yikes). Women entered I believe as the 10th seed though I haven’t yet read how they’re doing.

Definitely intend on going assuming son makes the team and the team makes the tournament

The first day was crazy with most games canceled due to lightning! Enjoy streaming the games, very fun. It’s insane rain and wind today, although yesterday was gorgeous and sunny. Who knew Wisconsin had such variable weather (not me)?

Learned something new today at ceremony, keynote speaker and alum of S24’s school was a former President of Williams College.

Pretty much every state in the Great Lakes region has some version of the joke, “If you don’t like the weather in [state], just wait five minutes!”

Many families leave the younger at home, particularly for drop off. Not literally home alone, but with friends or family.

Yeah, she looked a little freaked the first time we floated the idea, but I have a feeling she might start being a lot more interested fairly soon.

Random aside, but D30 has always been tall for her age (she is now 5’8" at 12), and has a generally mature air about her. In fact, we went to a wedding last summer and when dressed up with makeup, a lot of people thought she was actually older than S24!

Which she normally likes, but every once in a while people kinda forget she is still just a younger kid! Us too, in fact.

Point being I think her initial reaction to being left home for a whole weekend was quite reasonable, but still in a year or two she might be catching up with the notion.

D24 is off to another social event–this one informal (a sleepover). There has been a relentless round of teen-centered graduation parties for about ten days (this kind of party means parents are invited only if real friends of the graduate’s parents, so we don’t go to most of them). Having her out of the house so much is good prep for just over two months from now, when a giant hole will be torn in the fabric of her parents’ existence. We did make some progress today when we bought her dorm sheets (floral, classy) and comforter (white, awaiting duvet cover choice). She says she also feels like these purchases are “pulling off the Band-Aid” for her own feelings. We are off to the in-laws tonight for dinner without her. At least it’s pasta.

I booked the hotels for orientation and move in. Orientation is right before moving in, so I am planning on 4 nights. It’s tight because I’ll drive with S22 the week before and fly home Sunday only to leave again on Tuesday. At least it works!

S24 is going to school only 2 hours away, but we have booked a hotel for orientation and family weekend. We haven’t finalized move in dates, but aren’t planning on doing overnight for then. It will all work out I’m sure.

We are waiting dorm assignments as some have regular twin and others XL twin beds. I know the favorite is the Tempur-pedic topper, but any experience with the Sleepyhead topper?

Booking S21s flight home for thanksgiving, wow, so glad I will never have to do that again. Flight is usually around $300, now is over $700! I have been watching on hopper and will continue to wait but it is insane!

I joined a group on FB where moms obsess over dorm room accoutrement, and people there recommend the Lucid. Some get the Sleepyhead, but I think those are the people who know they’re in dorms for multiple years.

My kid will have to live off campus after the first year, so we just got the Lucid.

I bought a generic one off of amazon, wondering why the sleepyhead is so expensive and highly thought of?

On the topic of mattress toppers, we bought the Lucid for my kid who’s now a rising senior. She decided she didn’t need it after freshman year (and having to store it over the summer in a storage unit) and gave it away. She now goes sans topper, even though will be living in dorms a total of more than four years, including a summer living on campus. Your kid might not need a fancy topper or might be fine without one.

Yes, that’s another reason people don’t invest in a sleepyhead for one year. People took pictures of the dumpsters at dorm move out and it was mattress toppers galore.

My kid has a twin in her dorm, but most of the apartments in the area are full or full XL, so it just wasn’t worth it. We got a 3 inch Lucid on a pretty good sale.

Is there a CC thread dedicated to items each parent’s child is bringing for their freshmen year anywhere? I see a lot of discussion about certain items that are being brought by families (fans, mattress toppers, etc.), but I keep losing them all in the large amount of posts we have in this thread.

I’ve seen such a thread before. You can probably find it by doing a search!

Here’s last year’s thread: What Should I Bring to College 2023 Edition

should we start a new one?
