He did not hear back from the registrar, but by the end of the afternoon all of his classes from the most recent DE semester that had been stuck on “TIP“ (which I assume is “transfer in progress”) had been fully processed, so it seems like they looked at his account.
His math classes were from previous semesters, though, and they already showed up under his transfer report AND on his ARR (academic requirement report) as applying to Gen Ed & major requirements. So he is confused why the advisors said he doesn’t have credit for those classes. He does have a problem with his physics class — the transfer report says it gives him credit for the Physics 1 class he needs for engineering, but it isn’t showing in the ARR as meeting the requirement. He’s going to email the department advisor tomorrow to ask about that. (It is great practice doing something he hates to do and that is a really valuable skill.)
And this is all a good experience for him to realize he does have to take the lead on knowing requirements & policies, and not expect anyone to hold his hand or even know all the details accurately.
As an immigrant, I did not grow up in the US. I find this game stupid on many levels. The fascination with guns seems cultivated at a young age, and even found amusing. Apologies for venting on an otherwise cheerful thread
The iteration that is played at our school is the Spoon Game. Players are assigned a “target” and you have to catch your target not visibly holding their spoon in order to get them out. Spoons can’t be taped or otherwise unnaturally attached to the hand, showers are off limits (it’s a boarding school), and classroom teachers get to declare their rooms “spoon free zones”.
D24 got an email from Student Life yesterday informing her who her roommate is, what dorm she got assigned to, and what room…plus the roommate’s email address, phone #, and home town. The roommate is from a rural area TX. D24 got assigned to the all-female dorm, will be on the 2nd floor so we’ll be doing some stair climbing on move-in day! D24 is eager to start chatting w/the roommate so they can coordinate stuff like who’s going to bring the refrigerator.
Got couple more ‘proof of life’ pics from my sister & D24 this morning, including 1 photo sent at 2:30 am our time of the best plate of Swedish meatballs & mashed potatoes I’ve ever seen. They took another “Dad selfie” imitating DH’s poor selfie-taking skills. We all now look forward to the daily silly selfie.
Was watching something on Disney+ yesterday evening and Princess & The Frog came up as a suggestion. That’s one of my kids’ favorite Disney movies…they used to watch it on repeat in the car ages ago when they were little kids. And 3 yr ago when we did a cross-country road trip to WDW, while driving through the bayou on I-10, we played the “Goin’ down the bayou” song a bunch of times. All of those awesome memories of my adorable little kids wiggling in their car seats singing all of the Princess & The Frog songs came back and my eyes got a little leaky! D24 sang one of the songs in the school talent show in middle school once.
I miss those moments and occasionally wish I could press the rewind button. But Disneyland & WDW are converting Splash Mountain to a Princess & The Frog theme, so can’t wait to go on that ride with my grown-up kids one day down the road so we can relive all of the love and create fun new memories.
Meanwhile, D24 turns 18 a few days after she returns from her European vacation and we still have to figure out what to get her for her b-day. I think it will probably be cash.
anyway, thanks for indulging my little trip down memory lane.
S24 back from 2 day orientation. He has registered for 5 classes and I am a bit worried its a bit much first semester but he thinks its do able
He registered for 2 Econ course, 1 Comp Sci , 1 Physics, 1 English.
He was surprised that he did not need to take a math class this semester for both majors he is considering as his AP Cal BC covers that.
Few observations he had.
Many students had not done any AP Calc courses. 85% of his high school does AP Cal AB or BC before graduation. Doing AP Calc BC in 11th was very common at his school and he found that many people he met at orientation had done Pre-calc and AP stats as the highest math.
He is ORM but in Our CA school they were the majority and he really felt that he was a minority for the first time which was ok but he said he never realized it.
On the room mate front he was planning to go random but now one of his friends who is going same college has asked and he is now considering going this route. I would prefer if he chooses someone outside his high school but its his choice.
Overall I think this will be a good experience for him.
That is a lot of class. We were debating if S24 should take1 multivariable, physics, CS and either English or Econ and a music performance class. I think less is more the first year
Is one of them like a freshman seminar or something? Something that is only one or two units? My son is taking five classes, but one of them is a one unit seminar so I think it will be fine.
My son is taking:
Freshman engineering seminar, 1 credit
Intro to mechanical and industrial engineering, 3 credits
Microeconomics, 4 credits
Physics 2, 4 credits
Required freshman writing class, 3 credits
So it is 5 classes, 15 credits, but I think the engineering seminar will be pretty light.
Agree I am thinking the 2 Econ courses is a lot first Sem and I will see if he can drop one of them. He says the COMP SCI class he is doing is one he has already done at school but he could not take the AP exam for it so he thinks that course should not be hard but l still feel he should reduce 1 course.
Actually in addition to the 5 courses he does have an additional course that is only 1 unit. He was told by advisor everyone in his major needs to do it and its supposedly very easy course. So If I count that it will will 6 courses and 17 credits. I think 5 courses with one of them being a 1 or 2 unit general class is a good idea and my Son can do this by just dropping one of the Econ Classes.
I think they have 2 weeks to do the drop but will ask him to set a reminder. He said that every semester you can withdraw one course with out a GPA impact at a later time but not sure if that will show as a W in the transcript.
S24 has found a roommate and received his first semester schedule. He has decided to change majors so is emailing his advisor this week to see if he can at least change his math class so he doesn’t have to take math twice as the new major is in a different school and has a different math requirement. This weekend the plan is to buy a mattress topper and to start to look at bedding and towels. I’m glad that he is at a smaller LAC where this possible.
My S24 also at UMd is in the same boat - but in humanities. He has a 1 credit seminar for his LLC and 3 credit seminar for his college. So also 17 credits with a 4 credit elementary language course. He is switching languages from Italian to Spanish which I suspect will be easier.
Interesting to see the variety of first semester courses people are taking!
D24 just signed up for classes today. At least for the moment, I talked her down from attempting 19 credit hours. To 18 hours. I went on a whole spiel about how she needs to leave space in her day for random conversations/activities, etc. that make college unique. Her comeback was that it is also a unique opportunity to learn so many things (via taking classes). She is aware of drop dates and has taken over 70 hours of college credits, so I said my piece and she will handle it from here.
Design Studio (6) <–assigned desks, will likely spend 20+ hours a week here
Math for architects (3)
LLC class (3)
Intro to Acting, because fun (3)
Class for her minor (3)
In her junior year, she started taking one class every semester for her mental well being (usually art or acting), and it looks like this might be continuing a bit longer.
Dorm selection was yesterday, but this was a nothing burger because the all the learning communities have guaranteed housing in whatever dorm they are located in.
She also bought a jade plant for her dorm room today. Apparently they can live for 70 years, and she is beyond excited about this plant. She’s already repotted it, fixed the drainage, and picked out a plant light.
I need to plan an outing with her to pick out sheets/comforter/towels. I still remember doing that with my mom (bizarrely I still have the towels…they do not make them like that anymore!!)
She’s still looking for a job, applying to several per day, and has a handful of interviews lined up in the coming week. crossing fingers Net positive summer with slush for the school year is the goal!
Bought a couple of sheet sets for D24 this evening at Target. It was something super cheap like $7.50 or $8.50 per twin/twinXL sheet set. They had other dorm stuff out, too. Need to purchase the mattress topper next but I think we’ll buy that off of Amazon.
