Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Yup. And he can always order stuff from Amazon and get it delivered to his dorm if he finds that something is missing.

Yeah, honestly I feel like this is one of those things where the kids might be a little more in tune with the modern world. Like I’ve been complaining non-stop for the last umpteen years about how the kids will tell me one or two days in advance they need something for school or an activity, and I will need to rush to get it from Amazon. But maybe the reason they seem immune to my complaints is that it works so often they see no need to change habits.

So, OK then. S24 is probably just going to focus on a few things that are personal to him–like certain clothes, the bike he likes, the sports equipment he is used to, that sort of thing. Anything practical but not personal, he seems to expect will just show up on demand. And he is probably right that is exactly how it will work.

That said, I understand they normally only get package delivery to the mail room, not to the dorms. So maybe I will ā€œsurpriseā€ him with the gift of a folding hand truck. Seems like a good way to meet people too . . .

You can double bag them in opposite directions.

D20 brought a folding wagon to college - it was endlessly useful for picking up packages, car trips to beach, picnics and every other idea one can think of to use a wagon. It folded up to something like 4" in width and was easy to put into a closet/closet space.

I think this is the one we purchased:

That is super cool, and obviously has more use cases than a hand truck!

Oh my. Maybe I should have one delivered to the hotel for S to keep. We will have a drop off time slot for move in, but after that, I’m not sure how close cars can get.

Had a small issue over the hotel reservation I made last winter at the ideal hotel. I had changed my mind and was wanting to stay at Cheaper Hotel out by the suburban mall and tried to cancel Ideal Hotel…except it turns out I had already paid for Ideal Hotel, booked nonrefundable by accident, which is something I almost never do. It actually all worked out because it’s walking distance to the particular dorm.

Been reviewing extensive FB photos of the dorms which has been a great reminder of how little space there is. Less is more. We have a little shopping to do, but not much.

S24 has packed. It took two hours. We spent another two hours completing assorted paperwork. I am not to bug him anymore today.

Our S24 also got a single (though not a private bathroom) and I was worried about not having a room mate. After talking to multiple people I feel better with the option now. I think if he is part of a LC that will help. My Son was offered a LC but dropped out. He seems to be confident that he will be ok so I am trying not second guess this.

Good luck to your S24 and hopefully he will have good set of friends and having upper classmen in his dorm will him get him some tips on what professors to take and what classes to take and so on.

I love my wagon! I use it for so many things and bring it for move in. I don’t think I’ll leave it for her, but maybe. We’ll see. Mine is from Sam’s Club, so you might be able to just pick one up if needed.

We used Mama bear, I think it was $75 for our home state and her future state. Ferpa, hippa, financial power of atty and health power of atty. A notary is required for the power of atty.

I purchased this because my kiddo is on the third floor suite with no elevator and the mail center is a good walk from the door. Figure she can use it for store trips as well - no car, urban setting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WLKNVQV/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

Thank you!

S24 and roommate have agreed on the prison cell decor theme.
Which is basically no decor.

You know when I was looking at some of the pics posted for the dorm room’s I was joking that they look like Prison cells :joy:. I thought I was the only who felt like that.

my D27 went for a summer camp at the university my S24 is going to and she gave us a walk through of her room which was all of 5 seconds. It was very prison like. Complete with the windows overlooking the (prison) yard. LOL

Well, Team NUM are now all on board with bringing one of those nifty folding wagons (I liked that one that went up stairs, but S24 said something about elevators and beach trips), and then shipping other bulky stuff as actually needed. We may even have some stuff waiting for S24.

I can’t believe we’re in the final stretch here. We leave to bring D24 to school a week from Sunday. She got a first version of her fall schedule the other day. Tomorrow, she’s meeting online with her advisor to make some changes. We looked at the bookstore to see what books may be needed (she won’t buy until she attends the first class for each), but overall, not too expensive. One of her classes requires no texts, but does require scissors, sewing needles, skeins of thread… this is not an art class :woman_shrugging: Sounds like it might be a very interesting one.

Roommate situation is still sort of fluid. She’s been in contact with 2 of the 3 now assigned to the room. The 3rd has not responded to any contact from any of the girls, and does not seem to have any social media presence.

On the home front, her very best friend, who is attending community college in the fall, decided it was going to be too hard to be here and watch all of her friends leave for college. So, she booked a last-minute ticket to stay with her grandmother in Greece for the month. She left Sunday night. It was all very sudden and D24 is feeling a bit down without her around (and also jealous, as she spent a month there with her last summer and knows exactly what she’s missing). Last night was a goodbye party for her other very close friend, who is departing for Alabama tomorrow. My D24 will be the next of the group to leave. I think it is all sinking in now.

The upside is that after literal YEARS of D24 having very little to do with us (politely hiding in her room or else out with her friends), she has voluntarily come and sat with us in the TV room almost every night and chatted for an hour or so. I am eating it all up. Maybe this is the start a new phase in our relationship?

Finally, we are looking ahead to family weekend. I bought tickets for the men’s hockey game. We are so NOT a sports-fan kind of family, but I’m hoping we get caught up in the excitement of it all. It does sound rowdy and fun.
