Thank you so much for this. We actually got an air purifier before move-in and I am so glad we did. In the end, his dad talked him into staying at the hotel and that was exactly what he needed for a little reset. The night he checked in, he told me he took a super long shower and was asleep by 8:45 pm. He spent the following day making appointments for academic support (did this without prompting) and spent one more night at the hotel. He got two nights of solid sleep which he had not had since moving in (canāt put his finger on what it is about the bed/room so he can fix it). But as we all know from raising kids, everything feels better once you have slept a bit. I actually did not talk to him at all the day after his bad day. I was pretty stressed to my limit and told my husband he needed to field texts and calls for the day. That helped me as well. He did call me yesterday and sounded his normal self
They have a big party at the frat tonight and the first home game of the season tomorrow so hopefully will be a very fun and busy weekend. I keep reminding myself exactly what you said āthis too shall passā and what a HUGE adjustment college is, especially when you are in a completely new part of the country and trying to get used to everything that is different including the weather.
YES!!! I ordered from āAll About Vibeā and they came out so good!! So good, in fact, that S24 made me bring them back home because they were making him sad and playing mind tricks on him
I do not, but D24 heard about this when researching schools and it moved a few lower on her list and caused her to cross Georgetown off completely (boy was her dad not happy about that!!) She valued an environment where she could join anything and everything so she could find her people and place. And she was already so tired from the college application process! She didnāt want to jump back in to competing and applying. We looked for schools with little or no greek life also.
Good luck to your kiddo! I hope the process isnāt all that stressful. I donāt remember this from my day either.
Nope. D24 auditioned for choir, but it was pretty much for them to confirm what part sheād be singing. Other than that, the clubs at her school are wide open and everybodyās welcome.
Well we are finally done. Drop off was easy and S24 is settling in nicely to the full week orientation at school. The hard part is figuring out when and where he can practice for chamber and orchestra auditions next week, but I have a feeling I am more concerned about that than he is! So excited for him, seems he made the absolutely right decision.
Have received the ok from The Child to call some time this weekend. Twittering on the FB parent group is underway re: a parent question about recommendations on car protectors to protect oneās car on campus from hail damage. Couple of parents said that their kidsā cars were totalled in a bad hail storm last year. (north TX)
And noā¦there isnāt covered parking on campus.
I think probably for junior year, D24 will have a car there but for now we donāt have to think about it.
Mine says he thinks there are a couple of practice rooms that are always open, but heās not sure when heāll have time to get to them. I think as the long orientation wears on heāll feel better about skipping out on some of the optional stuff to slip off and practice, though.
Finally back home from dropping S24 off! (husband flew home Tuesday after move-in, but the 11 year old and I spent a very long time driving back). Move-in went smoothly; I talked to him last night and he seems to be doing well. Heās not a fan of the week of a million icebreaker activities that is orientation, but sounds like he already has a little group heās been hanging out with a lot, including his roommate, so thatās very good to hear. With his brothers I had one kid who had a very tough transition and a miserable first semester (though a good experience overall) and one kid who took to college life immediately and was happy as could be from day 1. So Iāve been very nervous about this kid; I wonāt relax any time soon, but Iām very relieved that he seems to be off to a good start anyway.
Itās so dependent on the college. S18 was at UCLA where many activities are notoriously competitive. Applying for tour guide at the start of freshman year was a good introduction: they took 10 from 500 applicants, he got to the last 20 (the last of five rounds) which was pretty frustrating. But he got over it and started to enjoy the competition eventually.
3 days a week, she and another girl have the same 3 classes back to back (bio, chem, 1st yr seminar). I think thereās a new friendship starting out of that.
She likes the seminar class a lot. I wouldnāt be surprised if she ends up deciding to minor in public health.
Chemistry has about 20 students. Prof prerecorded his lectures. The HW is to each the lectures and take notes, while the 2 lecture sessions per week are spent in class doing problem sets. Prof told them he does it this way because he wants them to really understand the material really well. For whatever problems you get wrong, youāre given a bonus HW set of problems to do as optional and you can use those extra points to boost test grades later on. And final exam in that class is not cumulative. D24 said, āThis is SO much better than my chemistry teacher in high school!ā
Labs start next week.
She likes having more free time than in HS.
Choir practice hasnāt started yet. She went to the activities fair yesterday but didnāt realize it was on both floors of the campus center. She was frustrated by that.
Her college has classes on Monday. Sheās frustrated because thereās also a high schooler event on campus on Mondayā¦one of the ones we went to last year. She said, āRight when Iām going to eat lunch, itās going to be mobbed!ā That made me laugh. It was just a few months ago we were those people!
She seems content at the moment. Hasnāt gone to get a flu shot yet.
Guess what? Iām very happy because, 3 weeks after we dropped her off, I have my kid back for 48 hours. Sheās in our car with us now! Really we have her for only 36 hours, because sheās going to the UGA game in Atlanta with a friend, and tonight and tomorrow sheāll hang out with us. Iām staving off the empty-nest feelings with a huge hit of my child/addiction!
By the way, as I was making a Clouseau last night, I realized I think I never reported back on it. Long story short, I think rice-washing really makes this a stellar cocktail, dangerously smooth in fact.
Pro tip, though: do not try to make a double in your shaker and then forget you should be more swirling and not shaking vigorously with the rice. As it turns out, that may in fact create a pressurized foam that may leak from your shaker.
And then what truly were your BEST efforts to clean up (understanding ābestā in the context that you did in fact drink that cocktail, or more precisely both) will still be met with cries of, āWhy is the kitchen floor so sticky?,ā the next morning.
Yes! Glad you like it. Itās become our ānot martiniā drink, though I think once the cooler weather rolls around Iāll go back to the Boulevardier.
Funny about the double and agreed. I stir/swirl, though if itās a single Iāll take a chance on shaking
Just want to share my excitement that after S24 applying to 19 schools, I think D25 is going to ED and plans to apply to 4. I know this sounds terrible and I truly care very much where she ends up, but all I can think of is the additional freedom to travel during our short time overseas if it was a one and done.
