My daughter is enjoying being the northern kid in the south. She said she’d grab gloves for today since the morning low was supposed to be 14. But if the day starts at 30 and goes to 50, she will just wear a hoodie and jeans and be fine. Her roommates are much more bundled. My kid would rather be slightly chilly in the morning than hot with a jacket in the afternoon.
Our local schools were off yesterday and today for cold. We had highs of 2 and 5 and lows about -10 plus the wind makes it hard for kids at a bus stop
-15 here at home, ninth grader did acquiesce to wearing a coat (unzipped) but refused hat or mittens. (she did not wear a coat yesterday when it was slightly closer to - but still below - zero.) Unknown what D24 did at her slightly warmer location - she has all the warm gear she needs if she decides to use it.
They are nuts! I just don’t get it. I have gotten used to the shorts in winter here but that is when it is in the 30s and 40s. -15 is crazy and dangerous
She at least doesn’t have to walk to school, but I have threatened to come up with an equation of how close I drop her off to school in relation to how well prepared for weather she is. LOL.
Several weeks ago, I posted here that S24 was considering med school and I got some very good advice to encourage him to see a pre-med advisor on campus. Well, he was several steps ahead of me and already was on that. He met with a pre-med advisor last week and seems more set than ever on med school. I know nothing about the process (DH and I are MBAs) so I will be learning from these boards and from him as he goes along.
Summer plans are finally being aggressively explored. S24 now is applying for math REU projects or other math research at his lac. Another thing that I never thought would be incredibly time consuming and competitive but looks like it is.
My D24 just started dating someone for the first time as well! I also needed explanation of “talking to someone” lol. DH is having a hard time with it…hard to imagine anyone good enough for his darling daughter. I am very happy for her, but exactly like you, a little worried too and hoping for the best.
D24 stood up under a lofted bed and hit her head “really, really hard”. So hard that when she told me the next morning she was dizzy and her vision was “wonky”. I told her to go to the ER but she didn’t want to. She has had 2 previous concussions and the second took some time to recover from. Finally she agreed once her boyfriend sided with me. Result: a concussion. Will she take it easy, stay off electronics, work with disability? No - because the girl is hard headed and doesn’t want help. She’s an adult now so I can only do so much. She promised me she will try to rest and she did talk to a professor regarding a test today to get permission to take it with another section later in the week. I just hope she listens to her body. She did say that she won’t be going to any parties for a few weeks - so that is something.
oh, man! Ouch! D24 had a concussion once back in middle school, from a car accident we were in. It was a good 1-2 weeks before she was back to normal. Hope your kid heals quickly!
My heart goes out to her and you! D24 was in a car accident last January and suffered a long lasting concussion. It was a long and hard road to recovery. Hopefully, your D24 will heal quickly (as most people do)!
Has anyone’s child been really sick yet? S24 has the flu. Of course he doesn’t tell me until he’s on the upswing. I’m worried about the roommates. Is it March yet?
New semester started today. D24 said her busiest days are MWF. Has a french class w/her roommate M-F. Said the French teacher is from Africa, raised in the Ivory Coast but born in Burkina Faso. French textbook is entirely online, wants us to ‘pay her back’ for cost of the online book.
LOL. Oh child, that isn’t going to happen. Welcome to adulting.
Scholarship apps are open now for study abroad Jan term for next school year. D24 said, “Hm, I’m not sure yet if I’m going to apply for that. I’m not sure if I’m ready yet. I’m gonna think about it.”
The flu has been hitting W&L hard recently, people started going down with it the second week we got back. A lot of my friends and classmates have been in and out being ill - I too have caught something, unsure if it’s the flu or something else.
The university has been saying in our Campus Notices “We are seeing a sharp increase in the number of students being diagnosed with flu, and local pharmacies are having difficulty keeping up with the general demand for Tamiflu.”
We’re all chugging through it, although it’s not the most comfortable.
Yes, D24 has the beginnings of what is hopefully a mild cold but probably wishful thinking on my part. She was pretty sick the week before Thanksgiving. She went to Urgent Care. They couldn’t do much but run some tests to eliminate strep, flu…. Definitely rougher being sick in a dorm vs at home being taken care of by mom and dad.
