Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Your daughter already has 5 good choices plus 2 she doesn’t want to go to. She can only go to one college. It’s fine to vent here if you need to, but hopefully you aren’t adding to your daughter’s stress level.

@BeachMomOf2 I was right with you until a few days ago. Then the College Essay Guy parent group had a webinar about the decision process. It underscored that this painful process also prepares them for life. The multiple AP’s and grueling test prep was not wasted, it is useful knowledge wherever they end up. The college counselors are like supervisors (good or not) that try to guide them and the teens listen or do not. My daughter did not listen to some good advice, and is learning some hard lessons. I am a wreck, but I’m learning to ride it out. It is like childbirth, painful and over before we know it. I keep reminding myself that these five months cannot ruin my relationship with my daughter. 4 years is not long. I also tell her that if she does not love her school, that’s what transfers are for. Sending strength!

As a Gaucho myself, if you’re in-state and it’s affordable, UCSB is an awesome school. Your kiddo will end up at the right place for them. It’s not too much longer of a wait. Hang in there!

On top of all of the other good advice, I’ll add to give it some time. Right now everyone (including you) is emotional. It is a roller coaster, and it is okay to scream along the way, but wait until the ride is over before she starts tossing out colleges.

Once all of her decisions are in, sit down and evaluate the pros and cons of each school. See if her views and perceptions change if you list the pros and cons of each campus/program without identifying the college by name.

Most importantly, if at all possible, visit the campuses that she was accepted to. Even if she has visited them in the past, her view may be completely different as an admitted student.

We have a friend whose son graduated from Indiana University (Bloomington) two years ago and he is employed and doing well in his career now. He had a lot of good things to say about his experience there and graduated in four years. I also know someone who had a similar experience from UC Boulder. hth

The good news is - you just named fantastic schools!! So yes it’s stressful based on where she applied- but she’s got a world class university in her future!!!

Your hubby is right - My husband is saying she’s gonna be okay she got a great foundation but I’m just so stressed out.

In the end, don’t forget, she can only choose one - and choose she will do - because there are multiple accepts!!!

Hang in there.

I hear you. It’s really stressful seeing S24 waitlisted at UCD and UCI.

I can’t make sense of it. 4.0 UW, 4.33 UC capped Weighted. S24’s friend who has less than stellar GPAs/ECs made into UCI.

I’m grateful that he was accepted to his safety schools, UCR/UCM and a great school. If not for UNC, it would have been so much more stressful. I’m beginning to think he used up his luck on UNC. Probability of him being in NC is increasing every admission announcement.

Did S24’s friend apply to the same major at UCI?

UCI admits by major and admit rates vary greatly along with the number of applicants for each major. 2023 Nursing had 1.2% admit rate (5800 applicants) to 64% for Comparative Literature (143 applicants). You also do not know the strength of the applicant pool for each major so you cannot compare students unless they submit the exact same application.

That could be the reason. S24’s friend’s major was not the same. S24 applied as a psych major and I know it’s a very competitive major.

Admit rate for 2023 Psychology was 18%. Yes, very competitive.

Animal science at what school? Major admit rates are not broken out by residency.

Thank you- I know you have posted this info before and I have read it on the UC apply website. It is helpful to understand how each campus admits.

Unfortunately UC Davis is not as transparent as UC Irvine. UC Davis admits into the College of Agriculture and not by specific major. Admit rate for the College is around 39% but Animal Science is one top 10 popular majors and considered selective so overall College admit rate is not reflective of the College applicant pool.
