Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

yes D25 was just average on the geometry, did great on the algebra/advanced but also did not great on the reasoning. She thinks it was all of the fill in the blank questions. She said there were a lot more of those than she was expecting, and they were really hard.

I really don’t like that they don’t tell you how many you got wrong or which questions any more!

Since English counts twice, that may be enough. Whats the SI? How did this compare with the paper test scores?

I’m reading on parenting Facebook groups that a lot of “math” kids dropped their score in math on the March test. Some went up in English.

My own kid won’t have scores today bc they took it on a school day, but they felt the math section was significantly harder than the paper SAT.

I highly recommend the Erica Meltzer Grammar Workbook. You can loose a lot of points on the Writing section, but its the easiest one to fix.

He only needs an SI equivalent to the Commandended Cutoff, predicted at 209.

FOR him, not AT him. Totally normal and empathetic.

She should do the Khan Academy targeted practice. Something like 15-20 minutes 3 times a week until next test. Small investment for high returns. My kids goal was to “level up” in all skills.

Poor kid, that must be incredibly frustrating. Remind him that he gets to choose which scores a college sees, so he can pretend this score never happened. There’s a couple more dates he can take before EA/ED deadlines.

Was the site you’re referring to specific to the March test date? I’m still not quite understanding how CB determines how many questions wrong equal what score when the test is adaptive and not everyone gets the same questions.

Is it possible he made a few silly errors on the first module and therefore was given the easier second math module (which means there would be a cap on his maximum achievable score even if he got every single question correct on the second module.)

This was my kid’s take-home as well. They thought the difficulty within the math section was things that belonged in the English section. The actual numbers and calculations weren’t an issue.

Initially that was my assumption too, but then when talking to friends their kids get tons of college spam mail but it isn’t focused on “we meet need! don’t let finances prevent you from applying!” which got me wondering if our diverse zip code has been targeted. Our family won’t qualify for need-aid but there are areas within my zip code that would likely qualify for full need.

Many thanks! Ordering the workbook now. No, not disappointed AT him, but still a bit frustrated that he didn’t take his prep more seriously. But he is beating himself up enough for both of us, and I will not add to his disappointment. He has the choice to use this experience to give up in frustration or let it motivate him to work harder. Hoping he will pick the latter!

I think he got the harder section but I think he just glazed over some of the easier questions in it. He said the last few questions were really challenging, but I think he tends to dig in when things are harder.

This too shall pass! My husband just texted me a good take on it, and I agree:

This will be a good lesson for him. He can pursue a vision of challenge or he can accept a more modest reality. In any case it doesn’t undermine who he is or what his future can be. His next actions can help define what his path looks like.

Ugh. SAT score dropped 100 points compared to the paper test. Trying the ACT next month. Maybe better luck with that. My DD 23 preferred the ACT.

Same here! D25 has gotten emails about Questbridge, which we definitely don’t qualify for.

I finally just convinced my son to at least take the SAT, but not until June. He was convinced he’d just go test optional. It’s a bit frustrating b/c he used to be a very good test taker. Oh well.

All that’s needed for a confirming score is one that would equal or exceed the commended cutoff.

Your kid is fine.

Even TO schools may consider test scores for merit. He should really understand what his list looks like before making that decision.

Adding onto that, schools that are test blind (such as UCs) might use test scores for course placement.

We just got one of those from Harvard. We also get mail from Questbridge. I assume it’s a combination of our zip code and school. (We do not qualify for Questbridge, nor do we have the stats for Harvard.) I know there is a lot more focus on economic diversity now.

Yeah she’s been doing the math Kahn stuff. This is her lowest math score ever. I really wish they would show you the test like they used to with the paper.

I think she’ll be fine. Her index for the PSAT was 220 which should be ok for IL (predicted 219) for semifinalist and then her index for the SAT is 221 so as long as she actually IS a semi-finalist she should be fine.

S25 isn’t taking the SAT until May. Question for those that did take it this time, are the percentages lower? Wondering if the test was harder overall?

She only needs the Commended SI for confirmation, so def good enough. And looks like a 1 pint wiggle room on the prediction.
