Univ of Washington (UDub)! Thanks, it will be a reach for her.
She has 3 APs in a row next week: Calc, Lang, and Comp Sci. Good luck to everyone!

Just found out S25’s college counselor quit a few weeks ago. No communication from the school about it, so I’m not sure what the plan is. He’s in a scholars program, so it was a smaller group of students assigned to her. She had already discussed his counselor letter of recommendation with him. Oh well. Hopefully the school will figure something out.
Our setup is similar, in that the school does pay for the exam and kids also get the same .5 GPA bump, but it’s not conditional on getting at least a 3 as far as I can tell. This year the school was clear that they are required to take the exam. I think last year they made an exception for AP Lit because of the staffing issues in that class. His school next year will not pay for AP exams though.
Have you considered Ithaca College? We have a kid there and he LOOOOVVES it.
No linguistics major at Ithaca, so it’s off the list. We’ve got things limited now to places that would allow a math/lx double major, or at least a math major/lx minor.
(Which means that all of my kids have now targeted fields of study that aren’t all that widely offered. Makes cutting the list a lot easier, though, it does.)
I thought I read somewhere that UMASS Amherst has a strong program in linguistics. No?
They do! (Not in my type of lx, but yes in the type C25 is more interested in.) But given where and when we have to end up we’ll need to head westward from NYC, and so New England is out for this trip.
And we’re also chasing Big Merit Aid™, so that trims a lot of places with really good lx programs that would work geographically for this trip (e.g., NYU, Penn).
Ouch, it’s painful that students are both required to take the test and required to pay for it too! We could easily afford to pay for all five tests that match the classes s25 took this year, but Geography and Physics 1 just didn’t seem like very useful potential credits (S25 will need Calc based physics later), so we save time/stress/money by not taking them, since it isn’t required.
Our high school neither requires the AP exam nor pays for them. The exception being they will pay for exams if you are on free or reduced price lunch.
It seems our district wants to encourage students to take as many AP courses as possible, as it affects school ranking. Out of curiosity, I checked our school profile to see how students score on the exams they take.. 23% of AP exams last year ended up with a one or two.
I want to hear your thoughts on Hofstra, please!
really just making sure they take the test seriously IMO…The course grade ensures they are taking the class itself seriously…at least I hope the courses aren’t so easy that they all get As in an AP.
I don’t have a problem with this system at all, it just seems clunky and cumbersome for our district to handel
(Our kids do get a boost to GPA for taking APs vs. Honors (which are both higher than traditional CP level).
I agree!
That said we at least have more limits to # of APs a kid can take than many places. 2 in 11th and 3 in 12th – its quite rare to take any in 9 or 10. You can get permission to go over these limits, and certainly some do, but its not at all that typical…
We are in a similar situation. They are still interviewing, with a start date of August 1st. Fingers crossed they hire someone good.
No APs here, as school phased them out a couple of years ago. Might have been nice to have those data points, but I am enjoying the less hectic pace right now.
So much is beyond our control. I think I’ll just help her focus on building her final list, with an eye toward favorite safeties.
My son had a good phone convo last night with a track coach at a local-ish D3 university. Coach invited him out for a one-on-one (he has already toured this school and liked it). He has one more track meet this spring which is an elite invitational, not school affiliated. He is staying on top of schoolwork but that pre-calc grade has slipped into solid B territory. Trying not to complain because he’s doing much MUCH better than last year.
This morning, when I went down to make my breakfast, I noticed a brand new bottle of PRENATAL vitamins on the counter. This struck me as odd, as I assumed they were not for me (a male), either of our dogs, or cat, leaving only my wife or D25 as the potential consumer. Both were still asleep when I left for work, so I had this little question in the back of my mind all day and made for an interesting dinner conversation.
Turns out they were my wife’s who didn’t read the label when she bought it.
The thought of having to start another 529 account was a little distracting.
Hahahahaha. A senior at D25’s school was just blessed with a baby sister. 18 years between her and the baby! I can’t even imagine and I’m glad you don’t have to live that!
My oldest sibling is 17 years older than me…
D25 took AP Lit this morning and said it went well. So grateful, as she was really nervous last night. AP Macro on Friday (can I say very ill-prepared?) and AP Bio and her math final next week. If she gets through those ok, the rest of the year feels much lighter, from what she’s said. May our kids remember what they’ve studied and be happy with how the test goes, regardless of the score.
There’s 16 (IIRC) years between my spouse and her youngest sibling.
Plot twist: My spouse isn’t an oldest child.
The girl I mentioned yesterday was the youngest until last week so 18 years with no baby!
