Apps have been submitted at five schools. One more is waiting a few weeks until after he visits, in case he wants to tweak his application.
Now we need to get portals set up, get SRAR linked for some, get the school to send transcripts to others, make sure those letters of rec get sent, and and and…
wow thats very early! school just started for me (I am a student btw) and I’m still having trouble grasping the idea of transcripts, letters of rec, and etc.
My son waited till the last minute (2023). My daughter is much more anxious and just wanted things done. She didnt apply to really any reach schools and most of her choices dont require LOR either.
D25’s teachers have been having issues submitting their letters of recommendation to the Naviance portal. D25 finally asked the “guidance” counselor about it and she said she hadn’t turned it on for this year yet. What the heck?! Super frustrating!
My son really wanted to be early because the applications, and having stuff undone, cause him anxiety. Like he couldn’t relax and focus on other stuff while this was still hanging out there. So for him it was an important mental health thing to get it out of the way. None of the deadlines are for a while, but he’s that kind of person who just needs to cross stuff off the list or else it will bother him.
Ours isn’t on either. Our HS has one “college and career counselor” - they don’t do individual help, the graduating class is 575ish. Their job is to manage visits to the school from colleges, do presentations to students and parents, and manage the Naviance portal stuff. Your regular guidance counselor should write recommendations but kids are supposed to be able to request a transcript be sent through Naviance. The button to send the transcript isn’t in yet. When S25 asked the college counselor said to just email the regular guidance counselor directly, the system isn’t on yet. Great…
Mine has common ap mostly done, but only 50%-ish done on the essay…sigh… I pushed all summer to just get it DONE because she plays a fall sport that she’s being recruited for and life is about to get crazy! Also, senioritis has kicked in big time already and school doesn’t even start until Wednesday. Anyone else?! She’s more than ready for the next step…
That’s not a bad strategy to apply to some different types of schools. By May, hopefully she’ll have a better sense of what will be right for her. And if you’re able, she can attend admitted student events and get a better sense of the vibe before committing. My D25’s counselor recommended that she include a couple of bigger schools just to have as an option. She thinks she wants small, so most of them are LACs. But she’s also included some medium size colleges and two state schools on her list.
My D25 is just about ready to submit to the pool of colleges that do not have supplemental questions. But she’s going to have to wait until school starts again because she doesn’t have access to some of the information like class size, rank, etc. I swear the school district is trying to make this more difficult than it needs to be. They use two different systems–one for communication and one with academic information. And the latter isn’t working. They’ve updated their website and I can’t even find a link to it anymore. There will be no one to talk to until school starts in a couple of days. It is so frustrating.
D25’s class is only about 75 students. The college counselor is the only counselor. Luckily the secretary sends out the transcripts so that got sent out to the one school she was accepted to.
They use SchoolTool and parentsquare. They’re both terrible and they aren’t integrated. It would be so much easier if they could access unofficial transcripts at least.
Same. My D25 has felt most drawn to smaller Jesuits (St. Joes, LeMoyne) but isn’t 100% certain about her future major so she is realizing she may want a school that has options of a few different ideas. She’s also totally undecided on what dance opportunities she wants and how much diversity in students is “enough” as she is Latina and is at a 98% white high school now. So there isnt really a theme to her list. She knows financials are key as we will be paying for 2 kids in college. She has already been auto accepted to 10 state schools plus Stockton and Tiffin. She was accepted to Wayne State College in Nebraska already as well.
My son is almost ready to submit to the 2 schools without supplemental essays also. We are having a similar problem, but with Naviance. He can’t find any of his info on there or link to his college app or add colleges. Hopefully he can talk to his counselor tomorrow, but they have been extremely busy so far. His grad class is about 650
