Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

We are on a visit right now - yesterday was great, today is… less so. A little too much free time without anything to do and a little more boredom. We’re at the end panned tailgate - I thought they’d have entertainment or something but not really, and now we’ve got three hours to kill before game time.

C25’s interview with their ED1 school went great. They submitted their ED and EA applications today (5 total). Here’s hoping that they don’t need to submit more in December.

Congratulations to the National Merit kids and to all the kids who have submitted applications! We’re on track with applications here, with four weeks left before my daughter’s first EA deadline. (I say “we” because although she is of course doing all the writing, she would definitely be procrastinating if not for me bugging her about it.) She now has a decent essay draft ready to share with her English teacher this week for feedback. Today we completed the rest of the non-essay portions of each application. We counted up seven supplemental essays / short answer questions across her draft applications, which was more than either of us was expecting. I will bug her tomorrow about drafts for these.

We are 4 weeks away from EA for S25. We are hoping he’ll get a lot done this week as it’s fall break. Fingers crossed.

Where does everyone get the 25-75% percentiles for SATs from that are accurate? When I tried to make it a column on D25’s college list, I googled and got different ranges for the same schools.

And anything updated from the US Dept of Ed ranges from 2021-2022? With TO policies, I’m assuming the figures would be higher?

I think the Common Data Sets are going to have the most up to date info on test scores. The averages have definitely gone up with test optional admissions.

NMSF application question, the prompt seems nothing like what she wrote about. She said the prompt asks about someone that has influenced you. Her common app essay is about multiple books that have influenced her/made her who she is and how that plays out in her life. Do you think that will work or is she going to have to re-write the entire thing?

Common data sets. But note that not every school has the same percentage of students submitting scores. The higher the percentage, the more normative they are.

“To help the reviewers get to know you, describe an experience you have had, a person who has influenced you, or an obstacle you have overcome. Explain why this is meaningful to you. Use your own words and limit your response to the space provided.”

I believe that would fall under experience. Prompts are not necessarily literal. Also, it can generally be argued that characters can be counted as “people’

The essay prompt is more generic than your child thinks, as just posted by @TonyGrace. My kid, FWIW, also wrote about books for the CA essay—but books necessarily have authors, so…

I think Colby stopped doing Common Data Sets.

But they give the middle 50s on their freshman profile page, as do a number of other schools.

nm figured it out.

My son used his common app essay, which was about how his love of math has shaped him. I think the prompt for NM is vague enough that a lot of topics can work.

I posted a long (probably too long) recap of our UTK trip on the “colleges that moved up or crossed off after visiting” thread. But we were there for the weekend and my S25 was really generally happy with it, and pushed it up to either 2 or 3 on his list.

What’s interesting to me is that he can’t remember why his number one is number one, but he really vibed with two and three. Number one is undoubtedly the most prestigious school on his list (and the most reach-y for an out of state student) but I’m not sure if it’s the best fit. Either way, I’m glad that the UTK trip was positive, it should be a target school for him and having more that he can be excited about will only be good in the long run I think.

Any idea if a change to course registration after applying to college will impact admissions? S25 is taking a dual enrollment class through our local university that is taught at his school. Did all the steps through the university and found out today that apparently the high school didn’t register him because they said he never turned his form in last spring. I could strangle him but I guess he just forgot to turn it in. On the common app he listed the dual enrollment course. Not sure if he should reach out to the colleges now or after a decision…Thankfully it’s not super competitive colleges.

Oh kiddo! I hope he will get better at keeping track of things, but he is so absentminded!

Has anyone gone through this process before and has a kid that submitted applications through the Common App that link to portfolio submissions through SlideRoom? S is ready to submit a few EA applications and a few of the schools accept SlideRoom portfolios. He wants to get his applications in, but also his high school is doing portfolio reviews in mid-October. Can he submit his Common Apps now and add his finished portfolio to their SlideRoom accounts later?
(Newbie here so if I should ask in a different forum please let me know!)

Ugh, I’m sorry, totally sounds like something my daughter would have missed too.

I would send a note to the admissions officer just to be extra safe.

C25 has no interest in applying to High Point University. C25 has never interacted with them in any way that would demonstrate interest in applying. C25 has, in fact, unsubscribed from their emails multiple times.

But they keep sending stuff—and yesterday, C25 received a FedEx 2-day envelope from them. It wasn’t even anything terribly exciting—a packet of non-customized marketing fluff plus a branded ball-point pen. But still there it was, a surprising amount of postage paid by High Point University for an unnecessary envelope laying against our front door.

Like, y’all? The kid’s just not that into you. Spend your marketing dollars somewhere else. This is really making me wonder about you—are you okay?
