lol we were just talking about it other day on how much marketing dollars are wasted… it’s just they want more kids to apply so they can reject more which lowers their acceptance rate And lower acceptance rates leads to more applications and the cycle continues lol
You must be more important than we are S25 is getting a lot from them as well but no pens! They have very fancy marketing materials.
I thought S25 was getting stuff from them because we visited with D23, but I guess not!
See, this is why I value the CC forum…I thought either living in NC made S25 more of a target, or that he had somehow signed up for being interested in High Point, but it’s a relief to know: it’s not just us!!
I was giving HPU a little leeway about putting the sell on S25, but the FedEx package did me in.
Nope, between High Point and the University of Chicago, I’m not sure who sends out more stuff.
I’m praying that none of D25’s schools track demonstrated interest as she would surely be shut out. She has not yet applied anywhere, but she actively unsubscribes from each and every email she gets, she tosses all college mail in the garbage without reviewing it, and she ghosts those that ask for some type of response. Most of the schools on her apply list are massive state schools who no doubt do not track interest, but she would be doomed if they did.
I think it is safe to say you are not raising a future hoarder
Well my dingdong kid was registered for the dual enrollment class thanks to the school counselor going above and beyond to help him. I told him to send her a very nice thank you note since she saved his butt on this!
Feeling a little left out over here. High Point never contacts us. And I’m from North Carolina!
Yale, on the other hand, sent my son a letter inviting him to apply. I want to send it back to New Haven, annotated with some choice commentary. Stop baiting kids into fueling your sub-5% acceptance rates, people!
I feel you on the baiting for acceptance rates!
I was entertained, anyway, by the fact that Yale sent a letter. Not a glossy brochure with pictures or images with statistics. Just a letter. I guess they have their own style of advertising, and they are sticking to it.
Agreed! My kid has gotten giant packets from Columbia with lovely written letters. After the second one he said “Maybe I should just give it a try…”
sigh
We haven’t gotten much from High Point beyond a post card maybe. Got a giant catalog thing from an Ivy or 2 and get lots of stuff from Yale. University of Chicago sends her some postcards but not much else. She’s trashing most things at this point. She opens anything in an envelope to check for stickers before throwing those out.
My D23 kept ALL the stickers. She was like a little kid with them. S25’s list is finished and apps are done, I’m just recycling everything except for stuff from where he’s actually applied.
First official acceptance today! Montana State in Bozeman. S25 applied on Thursday
It’s a safety school and he’s not really interested but it does feel good to know that he’s definitely going to college.
Yale sent us a book (well a 100+ page pamphlet). I know because I retrieved it out of the trash can unread. It was the most impressive piece of college marketing I’ve seen. I’m impressed with the quality of UChicago’s marketing; Yale’s was similar, but much . . . well, more.
I know, right? It’s like, stickers are solid gold!
(Further evidence that today’s college applicants are largely being raised by Gen X. Any of my fellow Xers remember the sticker craze when we were kids? I remember an actual sticker store at the mall!)
Congrats! A safety is still a wonderful thing to celebrate! (And I would love to move to Bozeman. Wonder if my family would mind…)
Me too!
Yes - I still have my album. My kids think it’s really weird that I not only had a personalized album full of glitter hearts, but also that I still have it.
On marketing: HPU lost me when they sent their catalog in a plastic sheath. Twice. No pen included unfortunately. And I found their material to be quite fussy and have too much stuff crammed on the pages. Anyone remember the movie Amadeus? The phrase “too many notes” is what came to mind.
UChicago has also been a heavy contributor to the bin. Tulane made an appearance a few times this summer, and the Columbia mega-catalog and lots of pale blue leaflets and such sat around on the kitchen counter for a bit too. None of these materials have resulted in an addition to the list.
Reach out if you have any questions about UTK. My daughter is a Sophomore there and could not be more happy! Its a great school and Knoxville is a fun town.
