Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

University of Chicago has been relentless with their mailings. Most of D25’s friends are getting mail from them too. Maybe they’re stepping up recruiting in low-income, rural areas.

Yes, my S23 was stood up for an online lesson. He still got in though.

D22 had some confusion with one of her interviews. It turned out to be a scheduling miscommunication on their end. Just email the admissions office and let them know what happened.

So D25 got into Iowa State. Says we have to accept admission before seeing our financial aid offer.

Sending ACT scores is now $19, and SAT scores $14. Haven’t looked yet for AP scores. Insert very very bad word here, plus hopes for very very bad vibes to head in the direction of the high-stakes testing scams companies.

HAVE to? And if its not good enough to they refund your deposit (i doubt it).

I congratulated you and then re-read your post. You have to ACCEPT before they will let you know what your financial aid is? How can they enforce that? It’s not like this is ED, where you, at least in theory, know that you should be prepared to pay the NPC.

(sorry, cross posted with @TonyGrace .)

Interesting.. I’ve never heard that before… The FA offer usually comes within a day or two of acceptance letters… In fact FA offers help folks decide… Hope this isn’t something new for 2025

Even for ED if the finances don’t work out as expected you can turn the offer down for financial reasons. This sounds strange.

I agree. I was only trying to contrast not needing to pay attention to NPCs and potential costs before applying (ED) and this, which seems like there was a massive typo!

(And yes, before anyone says anything, I think you should run NPCs on all your potential schools before applying. But ED has a commitment that other applications do not, so while it might be a waste of time and money to apply to a school that ends up being unaffordable, you are certainly allowed to apply wherever you want outside of ED and they should give you a financial aid offer!)

Re: college mailings. I know I don’t have a ‘25 kid, but since last fall I’ve been getting mailings from BU! Hello?! I live 14 hours away, I’m 52 years old and my youngest kid graduated HS in 2019! I wonder how long they will keep sending me stuff until they realize I ain’t coming.

Last year my son’s Lang class was assigned the task of analyzing the college marketing materials to identify persuasive writing strategies: vague bold claims, statistics without context, empathic identification and colloquial language. We had so much fun with this exercise, found a brochure that said “blah blah blah” between it’s bold claims. It’s quite insulting to these 17 year old kids who are committing to higher education as if they can only read one word at a time … PROSPER … EXPLORE …

I looked at what d25 pulled up on iowa. Now going thru my own search it seems that seeing the scholarships requires acceptance of admission, not the financial aid.
Im guessing she will get the 4k/yr only auto merit.

I wonder what the result of this policy will be on their yield. This would turn me off completely for a school.

I also wonder if, since it’s a public body, you can just submit a written request for records related to your child’s scholarship awards (submit outside of the portal). In VA, public bodies have 5 business days to respond with the records. Probably not worth the hassle but it’s still so annoying that I might do it just to make the point.

Current surprise: The number of EU and UK universities that just this month started sending C25 promotional emails.

My daughter seriously considered studying at a public French university — with most classes in French — but missed scoring high enough on the language test by a smidge.

We decided that was just as well as going to university is a big enough leap before adding studying in a foreign language to the mix — though one of her life goals is to become fluent in French. And plenty of non-native English speakers attend US universities.

She will probably do a study abroad program, and possibly a master’s degree abroad. The cost is so low to attend a public French university!

I know! Even UK universities are pretty cheap—acknowledged that the US dollar has been unsustainably strong lately, but even so.

But I think the general idea we have right now is that if C25’s plans for grad school change from a master’s of library science to a master’s or doctorate in math or linguistics, that’s when it’d be time to look at European universities (probably, given C25, in the German language region).

My oldest daughter studied for 2 years in Tubingen she loved it there. Most classes in English some in German. She was an international relations major. It was definitely cheaper

Are many schools requiring official scores? Most of ours allowed self reporting until matriculation.

Not many, but several award/scholarship competitions (e.g., National Merit) do.
