Yeah, he got his one nice boost, and now it’s the same. Wait until mid-December, mid-January. One of his schools only offered ED or RD so that one I think he won’t hear back until March? They weren’t that high on his list and by March, I’m betting his heart will be leaning hard towards someone that accepted him earlier.
When my S22 did this the school that was, by far, his top choice going into applications was the same way - ED or RD and we weren’t willing to ED without knowing if he’d get merit aid. So he didn’t hear from them until late March. All his other schools had let him know decisions by mid-January and he’d had that time to let the idea of attending each of them sink in, and to do more research on the programs and schools, and to really start to envision himself at one of the others. As it turned out his top choice offered him no merit aid, so it was really too expensive to attend anyway, but he wasn’t upset about that because by that time he’d really stopped thinking about them, focusing instead on the others as potential future homes.
How do you find out if you’re an auto admit? D25 logged into commonapp yesterday and nothing popped up. Do you have to submit the app to a school first? Is it generally in state schools that do this?
For my D25 it popped up some time after she had submitted applications. She’s been submitting in small groups. I don’t know if it was after the first or second set she submitted. It’s targeted, but might also require the student to have submitted an application first.
Interesting. I would think she meets the criteria set so maybe it’s that she hasn’t actually submitted any applications even though all of her data is in the account.
S25 has it pop up on his common app dashboard as well, but he has not yet submitted any applications, let alone completed one fully. It says in the header “based on your application responses, it looks like you meet the direct admissions qualifications for 1 or more colleges”, so I am wondering if maybe something other than stats is triggering this? Just like the mailers?
It’s a pretty eclectic list that includes SMU, UMass Lowell, and Hampshire (and the New School).
I believe it’s targeted towards low and middle income students. Although I’m not sure how the Common App even knows income levels. Anyone have any idea?
Common App and participating colleges look at up to 6 eligibility criteria:
Citizenship status
Cumulative GPA, GPA scale, and GPA weight
Common App Fee Waiver response
Highest education level of parents
Legal sex (if applicable)
Permanent home address
To help us determine if you’re eligible, you’ll first need to answer questions related to these criteria in the profile, family, and education sections of your Common App tab. Your responses to those questions will be evaluated differently depending on which program the offering college is participating in. For more information on the different direct admissions programs on Common App, please use these companion FAQs:
S25 submitted his MIT app today, and one of more of his common app schools also (Rose-Hulman). I think he is pretty close to being ready to submit all but one of his others. He realized the Michigan State (which he submitted a couple weeks ago) required official transcripts to be sent rather than just self-reported…and we then realized that for MSU and any other schools that require this, we have to send 3 transcripts - one for high school plus two more to take care of the 2 schools where he has done dual enrollment classes. I hope not too many more of his schools he’s applying to require that. It added $30 in total, but also the hassle of doing it, from 2 different transcript services to cover the 3 schools involved.
Super thankful my kids could not care less about rankings (now my employer is a different story- we broke T100 and also T60 for program).
D25 got another acceptance today. She did not apply to any reaches so I am anticipating 100% acceptances (similar to S23). We focus on personal fit and finances so there hasn’t been reaches that they have been interested in. Heading to Central Michigan U this weekend for a visit.
So tally thus far is:
Auto admit to 10 instate Wisconsin publics (not Madison or LaCrosse)
Iowa State
Wayne State College (NE)
Mercyhurst
(not including auto admit on niche or commonapp)
3.3 gpa, TO, only 1 super time intensive EC (dance) and a job
Financials wont come in until spring most likely. Wish we would know sooner but not possible with Tuition Exchange.
We have 3 college transcripts to send in. Thankfully, only one college has needed them so far. The other one only wants them if she’s accepted. Not sure about the colleges she hasn’t submitted applications to yet.
Just when I thought we were done touring colleges my D’s friend who’s also a music major invited her along to the open house at Montclair in October. He’s very interested in going there because his instrument instructor is someone he very much wants to work with and it’s so close to NYC. A couple more friends are coming as well, musical theater and vocal performance kids. My D’s safer school is Rowan but she really doesn’t want to go there so hopefully Montclair will be another saferish option (for instrumental only definitely not for the MT kid).
D’s essay is coming along but she definitely needs someone else that’s not me to critique it. It reads almost too simple for a senior and she’s not in language arts this term for a teacher to push her. The school college counselor in Aug emailed me he’d be willing to help but hasn’t responded to her requests for an appointment. My cousin offered to help but he’s busy. If the counselor doesn’t respond this week I’m either going to have her make an account here and request help or just submit as is and pray for the best. Her first audition date is Nov 10 so she needs to get this process moving.
I’m not sure where to post this question, so bear with me if it doesn’t belong here.
For some reason I’ve lost the ability to vary my “thumbs up” response so as to better respond to any particular post. While a “thumbs up” is a great default, it doesn’t seem to quite fit a response to a post where a kiddo got accepted to a dream school or, sadly, someone was rejected or so many other posts that a thumbs up just does not seem fitting.
So, anyone know how to get that functionality back? I used to just be able to hover over the thumbs up and an assortment of emoji responses appeared. No longer the case.
This happened to me a good while back, then it was fine for a month, and then it happened to me again, and now it’s been fine again for the past few months.
I meticulously ruled out any client-side issues, but was still told it had to have been my own settings and CC tech support couldn’t help me, sorry. (Including a most-people-aren’t-having-trouble brushoff that was phrased really poorly for consumer-directed communication.) No idea what they had changed each time it changed for me, which means I’m not earning a heart response, but I do wish you better tech support than I got!
Following Austen’s suggestion on the link they provided I reached out to CC_Sorin and he did provide a response. It didn’t solve the issue but he did try.
This happened to me before as well and seemed to resolve itself after a while.
