Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Did it? It was always pretty up there.

Thank you for mentioning the Dual Enrollment transcripts!! My daughter is applying Michigan State also (hasn’t submitted yet), but I’ll bet anything she’s missed this tidbit! :face_exhaling:

I mean just from 9 to 5.

I am having the same problem. When I try to do anything other than thumbs up it glitches and takes away my response. Then after three trys it says “you have to wait to try again”. Very frustrating!

CC_Sorin has suggested a clearing of the cache. I’ve tried that and it hasn’t seemed to work, but I’ve not yet cleared all of my cache so will likely try that.

Note, this functionality is working on my phone, so it is not a system issue or even an account specific issue. I’m relatively confident that there is a setting or cache or something that is affecting this on my desktop.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that - Bowdoin is going to appeal to a very specific kid and that fact that it’s in ME will already weed some out. But nice that the ranking went up.

And FWIW, here’s the thread with my saga from earlier (starting Feb 2023, though it had begun late 2022). A number of fixes were suggested on that thread, none of which worked, but maybe one will work for you.

S25 asked his physics/pre-calc teacher if he would write his letter of recommendation back in May, and the teacher agreed. (It was the same teacher who wrote a letter of rec for a summer program for him earlier in the spring.) He asked the teacher again about it when the school year started, and the teacher said to send him an email with some additional information about his involvement, plans, etc. He asked the teacher a couple of weeks later if he needed anything else, and the teacher asked him to send another email with answers to questions. S25 followed up with the teacher again last week, and the teacher said he would get it by this week. I know the teacher thinks well of my son since he gave him an award for physics last year, but I’m crossing my fingers that the letter gets done in the next couple of weeks. :crossed_fingers:t2: :crossed_fingers:t2: :crossed_fingers:t2:

Same exact situation here with the Physics teacher!

The counselor met with D and went over her application. In Aug he emailed me a copy of her transcript and D copied the information from it. Apparently things have changed because he had to update some things. He didn’t say anything about the activities section. He read the essay and really liked only fixing a couple punctuation/grammar errors and told her not to change anything. One thing that struck me was he said that she didn’t write about anything already mentioned in the application. He felt it was original and spoke about her as a person. Her cousin read it as well and said he has some comments but they haven’t had a chance to chat yet. So it’s getting closer to submission time.

Since you mentioned that Harvey Mudd would greatly appeal, have you looked at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology?

It’s located in Terre Haute Indiana and has about 2k students. Seems to have a great reputation.

I agree that schools with admission based on stats should be on the list but, interestingly, I do not see KU (Univ.Kansas), MU (Univ.Missouri) or ISU (Iowa State) on the list:

I also do not see Tulsa but I don’t know if the poster was mentioning this was an admission through the Common App or some other direct admission process such as Niche.

Well, S25 got his last application in tonight. I think his last at least. He originally had McGill on his list, mostly because they post the last years admittance criteria so we knew he’d get in and I think he was kind of caught up in the adventure of Montreal. But now I think he’s not really interested in more options, and he’s a little intimidated by the idea of having to do customs to get back and forth to home. I have to admit, while I’d enjoy visiting there, I’m glad it’s basically off the list, as it seemed like a pain to deal with logistics. So with UTK in tonight, applications are finished.

He still needs to do some honors college applications, and I really want him to spend some time and effort looking for scholarships (I do not know how to suggest he start this effort). But he’s pretty happy to have the basics done.

Unprompted by me he actually wanted to spend some time today going through Naviance data on admissions, so we did that for a bit and I showed him the common data set data on merit awards at the schools he’s looking at.

Then after he left to go game with his friends since I was in a groove I started making a comparison chart for him so he can look at the required courses for the schools he’s looking at.

He has three schools where he’d be a construction management major; three where he’d major in geography with a focus on urban planning; one where he’d major in urban planning. So far I’ve only entered data on the three construction management majors (surprisingly different), and the one geography major that is at a true liberal arts school with a wide array of pre-reqs.

I’m hoping that when all of this is done, it will give him a way to weigh the different programs and think about what appeals to him most.

I have little to offer on this, but beginning late summer, the podcast “Your College Bound Kid” has had quite a few segments from several diffferent guests re scholarships. The downside to that podcast’s format is that they will break interviews up into shorter segments and play them across multiple episodes. So, an hour long interview may be across three or four episodes. I think they received feedback on that style and actually put the full interview up on their website now.

If you are interested in which episodes these recent interviews are in, I can look that up. They were informative.

The upshot is that those students that seem to have the most success are going after more local scholarships or focus on organizations affiliated with their major or other interests. There will be less competition for these and your application will generally speak to them more closely. However, these are typically for less money than the national scholarships.

NB - be careful if you will be receiving any financial aid. Often, scholarships will be first applied to the aid rather than to the student’s contribution. Just check what your schools’ policy is.

All that said, I loved your post and kudos to your son. Outstanding!

My update: I hate anxiety and how it affects my kid.

On a more positive note, first artistic acceptance today. (Remind me to celebrate, people; the shadows feel stronger than the sun right now. This, too, will pass, but it clouded our Friday night.)

Thank you for this! I’ll go check it out!

You’ve got this. It’s such a stressful time for them. But an artistic acceptance! That’s great good news! I’ll be thinking sunshine thoughts for you.
