Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

4 new applications submitted this weekend. One was free (U Nevada-Reno)!

I found the page where it tells whether or not D25’s teacher has submitted the LOR. She has not.

The deadline is for the student. The school has time to send extra stuff and most colleges will reach out if something is missing. Our term ends end of November and it is never an issue. Transcripts are sent out as soon as they become available.

D25’s teachers got their recommendations in however we are now anxiously waiting for the counselor to finish up what she needs to do for NMF! That is due on Wednesday and as of last night it wasn’t turned in yet. This is so stressful since it could cost us thousands of dollars if that doesn’t get turned in. D25 is meeting with her today so hopefully she’ll get it in!

As I learned last year, it is a very soft deadline and the school has until the end of the month to send it in.

As an example, UGA’s EA deadline is October 15th, and materials deadline is October 29th.

Oh, thank you. That makes me feel a bit better. I will not be telling them that however!

D25’s counselor got the NMF paperwork in yesterday afternoon! Such a relief. D25 also got 3 more applications in last night. I think she wants to do 2 more, a local option right next door to her high school (so basically no chance she’ll go there but she wants her bases covered) and University of Tulsa since she could go for free. We do need to find time to go out and visit there though. I feel so much better that she has her EA apps in. She has 1 scholarship she needs to apply to before November also plus her rolling admission school is starting to release their scholarship opportunities.

1st quater is almost done, 3 more to go!

Anyone else getting texts/emails from the colleges your kids applied to? I got 3 today, one was a video from Wheaton from D25’s admission counselor, 1 from Hope with instructions to set up a portal and I forget what the other was. Is it normal to get these things? I figured all of that stuff would just go to D25’s email/phone.

I’ve noticed some of those emails too! Iowa State sends out so many! Most of the other ones have been more timely information…“Don’t forget that your student’s application is missing documents that need to be submitted” and that sort of thing. We still have a couple schools we need to submit official transcripts for. I sat down and did that with S25 for the first couple schools that needed this, but we still have 1 or 2 more to go. I have to do it with him as it needs my signature, and he doesn’t want to forge it.

S25 has all but one application submitted, and maybe 1 or 2 more that he might still add to the list. He is visiting 3 schools with Dad over fall break, one of which wasn’t even on the list before.

And to add more drama to our lives, S25 just broke his dominant arm doing his fall sport. At least applications are mostly done! I’m most worried about his DE calculus class that has hand written exams. He will see that professor tomorrow for the first time since the injury, so hopefully they will get something figured out, and it’s still a couple weeks until the first exam.

Some schools have, on the application, a button to check to the effect of “also include my parent/guardian for email communication.” I know my S25 checked that box for one school and, for that school, we’ve also gotten emails (we received your application, your application qualifies you for the honors college, honors applications due X date etc.) So maybe that’s what happened?

I’ve been getting them—colleges know that if they can get the parents on board with them, the kid has a much higher chance of going there.

Fortunately I successfully trained my child into always checking no on the “Can we text you?” box for everything, so that’s spared all of us that particular annoyance.

And now D25 got emails with all of the info to set up her portals. I guess she made a boo boo on the Wheaton app on Common App. She sent in both recommendations from her teachers when they only wanted one (and one faith recommendation). So, they wouldn’t except them (it said recommenders waived which she didn’t do) . So, she had to give them one of her recommender’s emails so they could email them. Lesson learned. She gave them the teacher that uploads things almost immediately vs the one that gets confused by uploading things. (lol) Hopefully that is all figured out now.

Just when you think you’re done something pops up.

So, my C25 sent their application to the “guaranteed in-state” school. And apparently they got the acceptance back already. Which I found out about because the school sent the parent (me) a “don’t forget to fill out the FAFSA!” email. I mentioned it to the kid and they said “well, yeah, but it was a guarantee”. I said “I’m still proud of you for filling it all out and getting a sure thing in hand before the rest of the applications go in”. They were in the middle of something, so we didn’t go out for ice cream or anything, but definitely a “I’m proud of you” moment.

I am guessing this isn’t a huge issue most places, my 25’s Q1 grades aren’t final until mid-November (school starts after labor day so Qi ends Nov 2 and teachers have time to upload grades). Kids go to all sorts of schools, and many apply ED and certainly most EA. They automatically send Q1 grades out when final so is quick turnaroud.

That is so early! Hopefully the kids hear back before New Years with such an early deadline.

Q1 grades are done this Friday for D25. I’m hoping for only 2 Bs, but we will see.

UGA releases EA decisions in November.

I have a related question. If a school does not require a LOR, is it best then to not send one, or can sending one help the app?

Regarding transcripts- S25 requested them through Naviance about 12 days ago. Does the school wait for Q1 grades to submit or does it vary by school?

I don’t know about your first question but the 2nd question varies by school

I agree that it would vary by high school Our school does not put any quarter grades on transcripts, only end-of-semester grades. They do send home mid-quarter progress reports and an end-of-quarter grade report, but those grades never appear on an official transcript because they aren’t the final grades for the class.

Holy fright, y’all. I just read S25’s essays for Virginia Tech (four different prompts requiring pithy 120 word responses), and they blew my mind. Proud mama here today!! Kiddo is on-target where he needs to be!!

(He’s done well with his other essays, but some are clearly more inspired than others. This batch…BOOM. Mic drop. :tada: Let’s hope admissions sees them that way, too!!)
