Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Would she dance at Mercyhurst? (My only knowledge of it is because they apparently have a decent dance program.) And did you opine about Hope? (My eager-beaver side is coming out.)

She is undecided about a minor or going out for a dance team. She is finally focusing on academics first!

We did drive by Hope. Many positive things about Hope. It looked like a really safe area and the old time downtown section is steps away and adorable. Clean and well kept. The beaches near there are lovely. If the kid is looking for a small town college feel, Hope is a great choice! All the students I know who have gone there (or are there now) love it.

My daughter will not apply but it has more to do with majors/finances/and looking a bit like a college here near home “too similar to xyz university” I guess.

Baby steps on the application front here. LORs requested last week. One teacher already wrote and submitted! Transcripts ordered. Common app essay and supplemental essays are all that are left. Goal is to submit her 2 EA applications by Nov. 15. Her reach school is due Nov. 30 and is a Cal State school, so a super easy application. I think she might only apply to 4 schools and she is already in at one.

So weird situation for us. Both my wife and I received emails from a school saying our child got in, but as far as we can tell (and I have access to their email) our kid hasn’t received anything. We haven’t said anything to not ruin the surprise–which is killing us.

There is no admission portal to check…how long should we wait before contacting admissions to see what the deal is?

Did you check their spam?

Sometimes I find a college email filtered out by google. I use Mail but have to go in Gmail directly to find it.

Yes–nothing.

I edited my post to say check directly in Gmail (if Gmail) if that’s the provider. Maybe the school will send something physical? Also, has there been other emails to the student? We’ve run into the occasional issue with a typo, or accidentally using the wrong email.

They use gmail. We thought it was odd as this was the second acceptance and we were expecting a reaction and then nothing. They were out at the football game last night and I checked their email. Nothing in Personal, Promotions or Spam. It was just odd that the parents got an email with a nice video and the student got nothing. They DID receive an email from them when the application went in so we know it is correct in their system.

Back from vacation. D25 held down the fort very well while my husband and I were on our 20th anniversary trip. She’s exhausted now though.

Not much has been happening on the application front. She has the 2 acceptances, and her other top priority school submitted. She is now working on the supplemental essays for a couple of other places. I’m hoping she is able to knock some of those out today. She needs to get the Wheaton application done ASAP as I think EA is due by the 15th. She also has a scholarship application to fill out before November.

We got her all signed up for her AP exams also. He Spanish teacher would like her to take the AP Spanish test, but I don’t think she’s going to do it. She is in Spanish 4, but skipped Spanish 3 so we don’t think she’ll be well prepared since she is already doing 4 other tests.

Depending on how they teach 4, she might be prepared. At our school everything you need to learn for AP you learn in 4, and AP Spanish is just the reinforcement of all that. Several kids go from 3 to AP, and they have to work a little harder, but it’s fine.

Spanish is not a cram before test anyway. Maybe take a look at what scores her colleges require (and/or if they have a language requirement that can be skipped with APs). If it takes a 4, it might be well worth giving it a go.

Thanks for that. I’ll have her look up when the test is. She has 3 tests the first week and then her last one is the very last day. I guess she has til the end of October to decide.

One school my son applied to, after submitting the application he never got an email to set up the portal. He wrote the admissions officer, who wrote back and said he had “indicated he didn’t want any communications from the school.” I KNOW he didn’t do that, but he might have unchecked the box about receiving text messages. Anyway, once the AO fixed it he got the email about setting up his portal immediately. I’m only mentioning all of this because I’m wondering if something like that happened? Maybe your son said “don’t send me X” and somehow the school interpreted that as don’t send me anything?

Normally I’d say have your kid contact the school, but this is a unique situation and I get not wanting to spoil the surprise/fun of the admittance. So maybe you reach out to the AO and say “hey, we got this, child doesn’t have anything and we don’t want to ruin the surprise for him. Can you check to see if there are any issues?”

Just a vent here. Letters of recommendation requested from teachers in April (school requires early requests so teachers have plenty of time). Not a peep from either teacher. I get that technically they are not due until the first application deadline (10/15 in our case), but come ON. Same with the transcript. Counselor hasn’t uploaded yet. So frustrating bc D25 just wants to cross these huge deadlines off her list and move on, but that’s just not possible yet. I mean, what if a portal goes down at the last minute? What if the teacher gets sick? What if they have a family emergency?! Why are they waiting until the last possible minute???!? D25 doesn’t seem too worried about it so I’m trying to keep quiet, but it’s driving me totally nuts. :grimacing:

I mean, once you get to two weeks to go, I feel like a gentle, polite (emphasis on polite!) reminder is reasonable.

Tonight I’m going to ask D25 to please gently ask the teachers whether they need anything from her and reminding them that the impending deadline is the actual application deadline. It’s not an arbitrary one she set. The good news is that once we get these two plus the transcript we didn’t need acting else from her HS. Everything is complete on her end, so that’s good!

My biggest worry right now is that the college counselor is the only one dealing with 369 kids. Two of my kids’ schools (the one he is EDing and one EA) require a first marking period report, which ends on 10/20 and is due by 11/1. It will be a nail-biter because they are sloooooow with sending things out.

We have this issue too…but my kid’s school ends its marking period on 10/30!!! WHY? The school counselor assures me that the grades will all be uploaded on the morning of 11/1. Do we NEED to cut it that close??

C25 sent a teacher a polite reminder last week, no response. lol
