Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

I think some of C25’s EA/ED schools want mid semester grades. Their high school doesn’t do quarter grades so I think they will send their 12 week progress grades. I wish they’d send the 6 week progress grades because I already know those are really good. lol

They want some sort of Sr. year grades. Princeton is well know for reaching out to guidance counselors as the REA decision date approaches.

As someone who teaches college kids, this trend of overly obsessed about 4.0 gpa just really worries me. I see so many struggle with their mental health! (And its world mental health day!)

And you want stress, here’s something going above and beyond: My C25 is the youngest of four in a family where the older siblings (and one of the parents—but not me😅!!) received precisely zero college rejections, despite a number of applications to solidly selective places.

I understand what you’re saying but my kid is not overly obsessed with anything except rock climbing and his girlfriend. But, he’s worked hard for perfect grades and would like to keep it that way. He’s not struggling with his mental health at all. He’s had far more serious challenges in his young life that I won’t share here for his privacy.

I feel like this board needs to be somewhere that I can share without having my kid’s mental health and employment prospects questioned. He’s a totally normal kid who likes to do well in school. I’m a mom who thinks he’s ridiculous sometimes and I’m just sharing!

My 3.6 GPA kid was also totally normal btw!

The last Common App application is in, hooray! She has one more non-Common App application to do, and it has no essay requirement, so it’ll be no problem to knock it out this weekend.

In reading this thread, I’ve realized I need to get on the ice cream train, so my daughter is picking where we’ll go on Sunday to celebrate!

Woo hoo ice cream!

If I can get my kid to please for the love of god catch up on his late English homework this weekend, we too can have ice cream.

I bought 3 tubs of ice cream today so I’m prepared lol. In the last couple months some of the NJ grocery stores started carrying Tillamook ice cream which coming from Oregon I grew up going to their factory, have taken my D to the original one and the new one plus had my mom ship me cheese for years. The selection is small but the Oregon Strawberry is our favorite. They’re switching up the flavors so I bought the last ones. I feel no shame.

Small victories: I had resigned myself to D25 not applying EA to a school whose app is due next week bc she hasn’t given her counselor (that she’s met once? twice?) her brag sheet. But I went online to see if she if she could still apply to the honors college if she applies RD and, lo and behold, no counselor rec needed!

Unrelated, but D25’s studio found a partner for her for the Nutcracker and this has made my day. Our family has lived and breathed Nutcracker every fall for the last…10? 11? years and I’m grateful to go out on a good note.

Kudos to all of you whose kids’ apps are all in. This is not happening here, in case anyone else needs some solidarity. I did remind D25 that websites crash, so maybe she could consider the due date being three to four days before the hard deadline. She nodded, so I’m going to go with that. I think that that’s our best option here.

This is close to where we are at the moment - me begging her to submit a few days before the deadline and D25 rolling her eyes.

Last night we had a bit of a wake up call in that our state school had a free application day (actually the past 3 days). So, of course we waited until the evening to try to submit it. Then she realized that she needed a transcript from her dual enrollment school. That process was painful and took about an hour. Then another field would not validate an address.

In the end, I think she got a very large dose of reality in that if time is short, if something can go wrong it will go wrong. Hopefully that experience will get her to submit a little earlier. UGA is due on the 15th, so that will be our next chance to see if she learned a lesson.

D23’s last Nut was senior year as well, after 12 years! It was sad but nice to have a ‘normal’ holiday season for once! Congrats!

D25 got one more app in last night. I think she just has 1 more to go. Scholarships have no opened up from one of her top schools though so now she has that to do. Looks like she’s going to have to get a recommendation from at least one alum for a couple of them. Luckily she has a couple of teachers that are alum.

I’m over all of this though. I just want the application process to be done so she can enjoy some free time instead of always having to fit this stuff in around homework and work!

I read this so many times before I realized you weren’t talking about your daughter’s nut allergy.

Solidarity!

Not only do computers crash, but I watched our school district’s application webinar and they closed the end of each session with: Local Time!

As someone on the west coast, I think that’s something I never would have considered that east coast school apps have to be done by 8:59 p.m.

S25 received a direct admission to UNH, one of their safeties. They submitted all their paperwork, and the UNH portal said “Awaiting Confirmation” for the last two weeks. However, they kept getting requests to 1) submit their paperwork and 2) open their portal. On Monday, they contacted admissions and were told they had everything they needed and a final decision would “probably” come this week. Their status changed last night to “Awaiting Decision.” Does that mean the final decision is imminent? What would be your best guess? I always thought Awaiting Decision came BEFORE Awaiting Confirmation, but maybe I am off.

West coaster here too. I’m so glad you reminded me of that! Hopefully he doesn’t let any of his apps get that close to the deadline, but it’s good to keep in mind

I love Tillamook ice cream!

As opposed to those of us in the US exclaves (read: Alaska, Hawai’i, the various territories), where that’s always top of mind!

The nice bit though is that west coasters do get decisions earlier in our day! The east coast has already had dinner and our kids are just getting out of school most of the time

Sunday is app day for us. I’ve been so jealous of everyone on this site that convinced their kid to get theirs done early. The personal essay has been the holdup since early August.
