Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

That’s interesting because Common App says deadlines are based on your own local time, not the school’s. It gives examples for schools in different time zones with the student’s time zone different, even for a student in China. It does say that timestamps are eastern US time zone but deadlines are based on the student’s location.
Here’s a link to the information about deadlines: Applicant Support

The website says it’s based on responses to fee waiver applicability questions and parents’ highest education. It’s targeted towards first generation and low-mid income.

I don’t believe that is the case. IIRC it is the time at your location.

LOVE Tillamook ice cream. We are lucky to have a wide selection available

Common App, yes. Other application methods, not so much.

Same here with the personal essay being the holdup. We are ready to go otherwise but she is struggling to get that one done.

S25 was accepted to Auburn today! That’s a nice win for him in October

My kid got to stay home on Wednesday for SAT school day (he’s not retaking) & I took the day off to help him stay on track. It took him SEVEN HOURS to be ready to submit something, at least 3 of which he spent on the last paragraph of his common app essay. :joy: But he now has 2 apps in—both safeties that he likes fine & that we can afford. He still has 4 more supplements for his EA schools, but it feels like we have some momentum now. He has been “almost finished” with the common app since August—that last push is really hard. Wishing everyone luck & patience!

If S25’s teachers accepted late work his GPA would be so much better :woman_facepalming: the struggle is real over here. Am I the only one who worries this will carry over into college, at which point all wheels might come off the wagon?

It’s hit or miss if teachers accept late work here. This teacher’s policy appears to be “you won’t learn without doing the work, so I am willing to accept it late.” You can’t get full credit, but really, you shouldn’t get full credit if it’s late, so that makes sense to me.

And yes, I’m deeply worried about this in college. I’m hoping it’s just one semester of bad grades and lesson learned, but we’ll see.

I have a D23 who is still struggling. He needs to see “value” in an assignment before he will put time into it. No amount of talking to him has gotten him to understand that teachers can’t assume you are learning the material just by showing up to class and that formative assessments are required.

Congratulations. H2P. IYKYK.

It isn’t just for seniors, but if you request a transcript mid-year, you get mid-year grades (whatever Q has been completed)…but they don’t leave those mid-year once year is done…(So if kid applies to a summer program before senior year in Jan, then Q1 or Q2 grades are included for 11, but just year end for 9 and 10).

Anyway, as I say, I think for almost all kids this adds to growth/progression vs. harming them – and school has significant grade inflation – while not posted anywhere, based on naviance, I think average UW GPA is 3.6+ and Weighted is way, way over 4 (we also have a weird weighting scheme).

I literally have never heard anyone complain and most of the teachers use this as a way to HELP the kids by design

We are also waiting for final final UNH from direct admission. I will say we didn’t get repeated emails. They said create a portal, which we did, and there was a “to do” in the portal of adding parents info (which we did) and now says awaiting decision. The email said it would take 2 weeks for final acceptance we haven’t hit 2 weeks yet (though almost).

My kid has done a bunch of these from Niche and turnaround process varies wildly. Some schools got us official final acceptance and mailing in a week, others say they won’t come until Jan.

My understanding is you are in, but they have to do due diligence to check transcript matches AND match against merit charge and do their own weighting. At every school my kid has gotten MORE merit than niche said as they are now taking into consideration rigor (not just UW GPA). This takes time.

A number of schools, when we went to do the paperwork the forms did note that you can’t do it for nursing, or asked for extra confirmation about math progression for engineering. I don’t expect more surprises though I suppose possible..

Also, UNH is one my kids top choices (though one of their likelies..) so we are eager awaiting that real final letter too!

I wonder if it is because the class functions in a semester, not quarter, cycle? Or is each quarter its own mini term and an A in Q1 with a B+ in Q2 gets you an A-?

Our school is in Trimesters. In the middle of each they send out grades but those never appear on the transcript. It’s just a check in “if the grades came out today, this is where you’d be”. But the curriculum is not designed around mid-terms. Sometimes that grade includes a single assessment or paper. And teachers usually don’t factor in class participation or HW. (I think to give the kids a slight kick in the pants). I have wondered if some quarter grades are like that?

At the end of each trimester the transcript gets updated. So if you were to send it out now, there would be no senior year grades. The school will resend all transcripts at the end of T1. They will do the same in March after T2 is complete. The grade from T1 will at that point be averaged with T2 and that is what shows.

All core classes are year-long… There are no real midterms to speak of. Final year end grades for core courses are an average of the 4 quarter averages in that course. Electives (arts, astronomy, personal finance) are typically semester long,. The only thing quarter-length are PE.

All courses I have seen (and kid has taken every level from College Prep to Honors to multiple APs) have LOTS of grades per quarter. Homework, tests, quizzes, papers (depending on subject) class participation. So even in 1 quarter there will be probably 10+ grades (of varying level of weighting). You can definitely do poorly on one thing and still get a good grade. Some departments let you re-take quizzes (though not usually tests). some tests are done as groups, etc.

The school leadership definitely tries to make sure place isn’t a pressure cooker-- which it could be based on neighboring districts and the fact lots of parents are alums of highly selective schools.

Our school functions similarly, just in Trimesters. “Midterms” are just a mid point report that go out so everyone, including parents, can see how they are tracking.

DS25 got an email saying his U of Mich application was complete, even though he did not send dual enrollment transcript. So maybe you’re fine.
