Any floridians here? do yall know if we can extend some application due dates because of milton? i got one due October 15 and still haven’t gotten power back
I’d like to think most admissions offices would be OK with this if you let them know in advance via email?
I am sorry you don’t have power yet and hope you didn’t have too much damage.
C25 did their Bowdoin supplemental video today and thinks it went well. Just waiting on one teacher to submit their letter. It’s going to be a long 2+ month wait to hear anything.
Earlier today I saw Florida State extended to 11/1 so most likely yes
If you are looking to cut schools, University of Texas requires test scores. Rice is test-recommended.
I think it depends on the school - like I noticed the N Carolina schools extended deadlines for people affected be Helene, but I haven’t seen other schools say the same (but I haven’t been looking either). I’d suggest trying to reach out to admissions officers at the schools you are interested in.
Sigh. Really hard weekend in our community. There are two HS within a few miles of each other and all the kids know each other through sports or scouts or middle schools that split between both HS or whatever. So not our HS, but might as well be.
A car carrying five boys who graduated last June went out of control early Saturday morning, hit some parked cars and flipped. One boy wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He died before getting to the hospital (which is less than a mile away from where the accident was). The driver refused a blood alcohol test and is being charged with DUI. Two other passengers were taken to the hospital but have been released. The driver is 18 and is currently in jail on involuntary manslaughter charges. One 18 year old is dead. Three other boys and their whole community are scarred and grieving.
Yes, there’s a lot of culpability here. No, 18 year olds shouldn’t be drinking and yes any passenger in a car should be wearing a seat belt. But oh. It’s just a lot of sorrow right now for a lives lost or ruined and multiple families grieving.
I’ve seen a lot of reports of Florida schools extending EA to Nov. 1. Can’t say if it’s all of them though.
First app in tonight. There was a lot of drama because D25 has not had anyone review anything in the common app except for her essay. I insisted on proofreading before handing over the credit card to pay the fee, and I found some typos and inefficient wording. When I pointed it out, she said I was picking on her. Siiiiigh. App is due 10/15 but today was the last night we could submit due to family schedules. I know it’s a stressful process and I am trying to be understanding but gosh so frustrating.
What was his question? My D got something about a hard conversation she’d had a couple of years ago.
I think they were asking about other schools extending to FL residents? Regardless, they should reach out to the school if he doesn’t hear anything from the schools they are applying to.
Their question was something like what is a change you adapted to.
My S let me proof his app to Miami OH and I’m glad I did because he put down the wrong major. He thought the Farmer School was an ag school so picked an entirely different major than what he wanted and we had discussed.
You pretty much described what happened when S25 came home from his paid college counselor meeting and said “I’m ready to submit!” when I hadn’t even seen the first draft of his common app essay. I have had to be very conscious of not making any suggestions beyond proper spelling, punctuation and redundancy, and the first application, it was sooooo painful. The second one was much easier, though, so I hope that is the case in your household, too.
I’ll add that the power of possessing the payment card should not be underestimated . It was the only way I had any credibility for offering the slightest changes.
Whew I’m glad I’m not the only one! We talked again today and smoothed things over. Also set up some “family deadlines” for the next batch so that it’s not so stressful. (i.e., she’ll let me see them by 10/23 for 11/1 submittal).
We’re back from fall break and the S25 starts his second quarter today. Returned yesterday from a fun weekend in Champaign watching a nail biter against Purdue. It was a beautiful, warm day and we tailgated with friends and some work colleagues. It was fun seeing old friends and my husband enjoyed giving S25 a walk down memory lane of his beloved alma mater. S25 had a great time, and I was so sure he would come home wanting to apply to Illinois. No dice! I asked if he thinks he would miss out not going to a big rah-rah sports school and he assured me it’s of very little interest to him. He just wants a small school where he can dive into math. At least he knows what he wants, and I guess it’s good that he’s not fixated on a school that could be a reach as an OOS student.
Teacher workday means S25 got around to submitting his last 3 applications today.
Ice cream plans are already being made, my friends.
D25 and her teammate qualified for the State tournament on Saturday (top six teams in the highly competitive region qualify). She and her partner are the number 2 spot on the team and during the League Tournament a week ago, they had to play the school’s number 1 team and lost to them. Based on seeding for Regionals, it was likely that the two teams would have to play each other again with a trip to State on the line. And, that is what happened. It was unfortunate in that all 4 girls are seniors and this was the end of the road for the other two girls.
All that said, I could not be more proud of how D25 approached this aspect of her HS career. So much comes easily for her on the academic side, but less so with sports. She is active, but she is by no means a natural athlete. But, over the past 3 years, she has spent a great deal of time working on her game - in organized practices, on her own, and with her partner, doing 2 or 3 practices a day sometimes. What impressed me so much was that she set a goal of something that was attainable, but a real stretch for her and she then pushed herself to be in a legitimate position to attain the goal.
Then, after winning the State qualifier against their sister team, they went and beat the beast of a team that was number 2 in the league championships.
How does D25 report work hours that vary from the summer to the school year? In the summer she works almost full time, but during the school year she only works about 6-7 hours a week. There doesn’t seem to be a way to account for this on the common app. Suggestions?
I know that I have read about this many times (regarding work and really any other activity that takes up a lot of time that varies during the year), but I do not recall the specific process - sorry. Averaging doesn’t seem to be a good answer as it overstates the school year time, but understates the summer. Perhaps use an average and then provide more nuance in the Additional Info section?
