Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Sidebar. I had a shadow for a second job and I really liked it. Fingers crossed I get the job! Having 2 in college isn’t cheap and goodness knows my employer does not pay well!

Have you thought about telling her this might make your son uncomfortable? Sometimes people need to be told these things.

Thanks. It’s hard not hearing much/anything from a school. She has one school that she is admitted to that texts her or emails her at least once a week to check on her and ask if she needs anything/has questions. The school she is waiting on has been pretty quiet since her interview on Labor Day.

My D25 hasn’t heard back from Geneseo yet, but did hear from New Paltz. Maybe the three you listed wait until the EA deadline to start making official decisions.

My S25 is playing hooky today to go skiing with a bunch of friends. Senioritis has definitely hit. Its going to be a very long year.

D25 has been sitting on her ED application for a while now. She wrote the supplemental essays weeks ago, but wanted to finesse them before submitting. But I think it was just nerves about making the submission final. She’s very sure about her ED choice. She’s just scared she won’t get in. There are five more colleges on her list, but their deadlines are after she will hear back. I’m encouraging her to submit them now anyway though. If the ED decision brings heartbreak at least she’ll already have the apps in and won’t have to think about it. Fortunately, she has one acceptance at a perfectly good college that we can afford. It’s such a relief to have that in the back pocket.

Having one early acceptance at an affordable school they would be okay attending is HUGE. I silently cried when S25 received that one. It is lower on their list, but they would be fine with attending, and I am fine with the price tag.

Same. It’s lower on her list, but she would be fine going there. Personally, I liked it better than some of the schools higher on her list. And her grandparents, who did not go to college, were absolutely thrilled. Grandma got on the site and was telling D all the great things about its size, location, academics. It was adorable. They kind of helped her see how great she has it. Like how lucky are you that THIS is your safety?

I think this is why I have been so chill with the process the second time around. S23 wanted a bigger school with big school spirit and none of those early acceptances were affordable, only the small schools (which he would not have been happy committing to).

D25 however already has at least 1 affordable school that she really loved so it seems easier to wait for the rest of the financials to come in.

S25 submitted his first application today for Macaulay (as the deadline is today). Not submitting any other applications until he finds out the Early Decision result. I totally get it: if ED works out, he doesn’t have to write any more supplemental essays or worry about anything else, it will be all settled. His ED application is getting submitted next week, so he plans to fine-tune it this weekend.

I keep waiting for S25 to take a hooky day. This fall, his school won’t have two consecutive 5-day weeks until December :flushed: so I think that is postponing any urges to skip. They seems to have enough breaks to relieve the stress of senior year’s grind.

I am amused, however, that there seems to be a “plan” in the works for seniors to skip the first day back in January, which is a Friday. Which I get – seriously, who’s coming back to school for a single day before the weekend after two weeks off? It seems like the teachers have even suggested it might be a good day for the seniors to do something else. Like, tour the local flagship campus with a current student?

I was such a nerd in high school, I don’t think I ever even considered a senior skip day. It just cracks me up a little that I my kiddo seems to be in a group of friends that is strategic about not missing critical instruction.

Random question that I posed in a different group, but maybe you all have suggestions too. We’ve gotten back the images from S25s senior photo shoot. I get to choose 20 to keep, and I’ve know been sent those 20.

What do I do with 20 pictures of my kid? I don’t need 20 prints of him. We do a photo card for Xmas, so one will go there; we do a photo calendar of all the cousins for my mom, probably more will go there. If we do a grad party, then I guess I’ll use one there. But what else?

The photos are great, but now I’m kind of like huh, why did I spend all that money again? What am I going to do with these?

I’m using a few for my son’s graduation party invitations. I stopped doing Christmas cards but was almost tempted! I also thought about making myself a wall calendar for 2025 but decided I’m just happy with using them as wallpaper on my phone and a framed print on the wall and one in my office.

Totally agree. For my D23 she used a bunch of them on her social media “Senior Sunday” posts and we used one for her grad party announcement and another one I had enlarged for our photo wall. Still didn’t justify the cost! This time around for my S25, we did the very basic package that included 10 photos and I still don’t know what in the world I’m going to do with all 10!

Yeah. Same issue here. We have a teeny tiny family and I have no idea what to do with 30ish pictures that I bought. I bought one of the smallest packages, but it’s still more than I can possibly give out to folks. The extras will probably sit in a box in the attic until I die and then S25 can throw them away. Morbid but true!

I’m sorely tempted to make giant pillows of my kids heads. Have you seen those things? They are really for dog pictures, so kids can take a pillow that looks like their dog to college. If they were cheaper I’d 100% make giant photo pillows of each brother’s face to give as a gift to the other.

Thats actually hysterical and would be amazing Christmas gifts! “Now you won’t miss each other!” My kids would totally get a kick out of that.

Big sigh of relief. All EA apps (6), honors supplements (3), and CSS done and submitted!!! :tada: It was so stressful for D25 with schoolwork, her job and lots of extracurriculars taking up her time too. Now we wait until Christmas when we’ll hopefully get some decisions to figure out next steps.:crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

LOL imagining your kid showing up in his freshman dorm with a giant picture of his brother’s face. Okay, roomie, your move!

Two applications due today. The kid is hoping to do them between 2 PM (when he gets out of school) and 4 PM (when he has to show up for work downtown). He’s hoping to just repurpose content from other applications.

Am feeling amazingly zen about it all. One is a long-shot; the other should be a likely. Who knows? he’ll go somewhere. I’ve scheduled a haircut for the middle of this window, so if he wants me to proofread and ensure that the word Macalester doesn’t end up in his UW application, he’s gonna have to hustle.
