Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Just wanted to acknowledge the 100% truth of this part of your statement in my house. My kid has a perfectly good, and large, dresser. And a good size closet that also has shelves and bins built in. WAY more storage room than he should need. And yet… the tshirts not only seem to multiply like rabbits, but they live almost exclusively on the floor. This is a battle I have no energy or will to fight.

S25 won’t buy a single anything from any of the schools he’s applied to. I think he’s superstitious. D23 on the other hand has a closet full of t shirts from every school she visited. She wears them to workout and says no one cares at her college.

Possible solution: T-shirt quilt!

AIUI they’re tricky to make (because jersey knit), but there are places you can send a pile of shirts to for the transformation.

Same in my house with both teens. One pile was there so long, it was more cat bed than clothing.

All three of my kids bought swag at every school they visited and liked. If they didn’t buy swag, we knew they wouldn’t apply.

They all three still wear swag from other schools, no tribal loyalty here.

Snort. I bought a groupon for a tshirt quilt place something like 10+ years ago… they just needed you to cut the squares from your shirts. I sorted my shirts, started cutting and… stopped. So now I have a wasted groupon, a handful of cut up shirts, and a bunch more shirts just waiting to be cut up. I really should just send them all to someone and pay again, so I can get it done. I’m always cold, there are never enough blankets, so if nothing else, I’d use a t-shirt quilt. (And yeah, I have zero sewing skills, so I would not attempt it myself.)

D25 only asked to buy a sweatshirt at one school we visited so far. Colors are maroon and gold. A top choice (unless she gets offered free tuition via TE).

Sigh. My S22 isn’t coming home for Thanksgiving, and the friends whose houses he hoped to go to are traveling or out of town. He’s going to do dinner in the fraternity house with a few brothers who are also on campus and I wanted to treat them with premade everything from Wegmans (it’s been a challenging term). I’ve just been waiting for him to confirm I should do that, and to find an head count. And although the deadline was tomorrow, Wegmans is sold out.

I think Whole Foods will do a catered meal too, and that’s not too far away. But does anyone have any other suggestions? Whole Foods is so expensive…

Where is he? Are you on a parents Facebook page or similar? Someone may know of a local supermarket/deli that will do catering like this.

I’ll stand strong with you. I’ve been getting emails about the swag sales too but we don’t know yet!!

That’s a good idea. He’s in Worcester, MA and I am on the parents Facebook page. Good call. Of course, now I need him to give me some kind of number. Because this is different if I’m looking at four people or fourteen people.

I found this YouTube show that researches the financial health of various colleges while googling the financial health of a small private PA college, and really liked the in-depth analysis. This may be a useful resource if anyone is researching lesser known schools:

I’m not in Worcester, but my ex-spouse is from the area. Suggest you call Peppercorn’s 508-752-7111, they do Turkey Day catering meals and looks like the order deadline is tomorrow at 4pm. Here is the detail that came up on a google search.

I join you in thinking that’s a great way to go out!

That’s an awesome suggestion - thank you!

Rose-Holman?

If so, D25 just received a mailing from them this week and it’s one of the few college mailers I’ve gotten to see. It was REALLY compelling to the point of kinda wishing that I had the opportunity to go there. It’s not on d25’s list, but

Costco. “Kirkland Signature Turkey Dinner with Stuffing and Gravy” for 7-8 ppl is ~$40.33 (depends on weight. It’s $4.36/lb) delivered by instacart. Includes 1/2 Boneless turkey breast, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, gravy, stuffing.

I was going to suggest dean & deluca, but that doesn’t help on the expense side.

Honey baked ham? They do turkey, ham, sides, etc. Just order and pick up.

Yes! Rose is his first choice and it seems like a great little school. No one from S25’s high school has ever attended but he knew the minute that he set foot on campus that it was the place for him. But I will not tempt the college admission gods by stocking up on hoodies this early.
