Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

ditto -Not only do dorms have pretty different set-ups, but don’t want to store a ton until then.

I’m not buying anything I can’t easily pack on a plane. I found a canvas hamper that has backpack straps in a neutral color plus a silicone mat she can put her flat iron on when hot to protect the counter. Aside from that I’m not getting anything else until she knows where she’s going.

D25 is not superstitious and has gear already. :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

Meanwhile, American University’s portal calls something that has been received as accepted:

I had to do a double take when I saw that.

my 25 also applied to American and did the same..

Now has a different portal that has an “RSVP to orientation” and “Visit for experience day” (experience day is apparently admitted students day) but no letter/ official acceptance

edit I meant a portal for a different school! this was confusing:)

Was that an ED to American?

oh sorry, I meant an ENTIRELY different portal (for another school) kid’s american is EA and nothing weird in it! (besides the above “accepted” for checklist for materials)

Yikes, orientation should just be for accepted/admitted students. Read the room!

right? it is a likely school for my kid, I will be surprised if they are not accepted, but is strange! You can’t actually sign up for either event - the accepted students days don’t appear to be publicly scheduled yet, and the orientation page says you can’t sign up unless you pay deposit  I am curious if they were accepted on back end and are awaiting a merit calculation or such …I am VERY glad it isn’t their first choice!

I liked Harlan Cohen’s message in this Instagram post. “You are the one who controls your future. It’s not a school. Not a school! It’s you!” And, as he follows up in the comments, “The college admissions game is to create scarcity and fear. But when you know you’re going to be OK, no matter what, you don’t need to be afraid and anxious. You will be OK no matter what. Repeat this.”

Son just finished his last application with a supplemental! Deadline is tomorrow, so down to the wire. I’m so happy for him, that he can finally relax. Just a bit though, two auditions are next weekend.

That’s a good idea. Mine loves coffee too. I just got mine a hair multi tool. Like a knock-off Dyson air wrap.

That’s a great gift!

So as of Black Friday evening, all the applications are in! 13, including the one that wasn’t on the list to the local open-access college that it turns out all the students at the kid’s high school are required to submit. Accepted at 8 so far, and of the remaining ones 2 are traditional RD so no word will come back til the end of February or the beginning of March.

And, of course, there’s honors college applications and such, but it’s good to have that hurdle out of the way.

Pitt honors college essay was submitted over break. One last supplemental for an RD school is still getting some tweaks prior to submission. As I mentioned upthread, we’re dealing with a loss of application steam in our house  and I was reluctant to push over the break. Still awaiting all of our EA, rolling and CSU results :upside_down_face:

On the that note, we’re having discussions in our house about one single school. Deadline is Jan 15 - either RD or ED II. It’s definitely a low reach and he’d likely need the ED II to get in. ED I wasn’t really an option as he needed a full first semester of senior year to get a bit of a GPA boost. We’re assuming there will be no aid, no need based and very little, if any, merit as he’s on the lower end of their target numbers. We visited once in person and he liked it. It’s across the country so hard to go a few more times before making a decision.

If anyone here has a '25 who did ED, would you mind sharing some reasons why? I feel very conflicted honestly as he will likely have a lot of great schools to choose from. He’s not in a position where I feel this is a be all and end all chance for him at a great school.

We’re losing steam too, but most of the colleges left are ones my D25 actually cares about. She just doesn’t want to finish those extra essays. The problem, I think, is that she did apply ED and I think she’s a little overconfident about her chances. If she gets rejected or deferred, I fear she’ll be too scared of rejection to finish applying but hope she will anyway.

In deciding to apply ED, I put up some financial guardrails first. If the schools Net price calculator made it seem within reach, I said she could apply ED if she’s sure. The college she chose meets 100% need and we have need. It’s fairly selective and we thought her best chance of getting in was ED. She really wants to go to this college. Now I’m scared of what happens if she doesn’t get accepted. I fear she hasn’t let herself get excited about any other colleges.

I think D25 will hear from 2 colleges this week: Hope and U of Tulsa. Then it will be just waiting for the last decision.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

We had a great holiday. Traveled to visit in-laws, and S25 was thrilled to see his cousins. Sometimes I feel bad that he’s an only, but I’m grateful that he’s so close to his cousins even though they live in Illinois.

I believe UTK decisions come out on Wednesday, and then Rose-Hulman has a December 15th release date. If the release date is on a Sunday, do they release that day or on a weekday? Curious to see when it’s released. Other two schools (St. Olaf and IU) are released in late December or early January, I believe.

Cousins are great. My kids are so jealous of friends who have cousins close in age.

I hope your S gets some good news. So many decisions so early! I think after the ED decision, the next ones won’t be until March unless I am mistaken.
