Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Meant to reply earlier, but was early decision a consideration? VT is notoriously suspected of yield protection, based on other stories similar to yours. But the engineering school is becoming more and more well known and are getting tons of high quality candidates and it’s hard to predict who will get selected.

S23 did ED to VT b/c from a cost to value perspective we couldn’t find better (of course he accidentally applied to the College of Science instead, then had to attend that way and then do an internal transfer – all worked out, but wasn’t drama free).

Virginia Tech no longer has an Early Decision option; only EA and RD.

Oh, that’s right. Frustrating. Hopefully, they aren’t doing yield protection then. I kcan imagine some high stats kids would consider VT engineering their first choice because of the in-state cost and they like the vibe better than UVA. Would suck if it was assumed they wouldn’t attend.

Congratulations! H2P! My husband and I are Pitt alums and LOVED our experiences there!

I think the year he applied there was still an ED option, but he didn’t want to ED anywhere - we did EA. We had to visit all the schools in August, when no students were there, because before that (it was Aug 2021) there were no tours and no visits because of COVID - and he wasn’t comfortable committing when he hadn’t seen schools with students.

Frankly, I’m just hoping things work out better for my S25. VT is a much better fit for him than it was for my older son, so I’m hoping that they see that.

This is me tonight wondering if we are missing a perfect fit somewhere for academics and finances :sob:. We have “pretty good” fits but until we get some acceptances and see some final costs it’s going to be stressful.

I’m not convinced there is such a thing as a perfect fit. I think there are a lot of colleges where my D25 will find a place and be happy. It’s about finding a good balance of affordability, academic priorities, and residential life. My D25 has to be ready to make some compromises. But I think there are things to get excited about at every college on her list. In my D’s case, the only reason I think she isn’t more excited is because she’s actually really apprehensive about going away to college. I just want her to be excited. She’ll find all the faults and I’ll be the one to point out all the positives. That’s our dynamic.

VT admissions always feel all over the place because they are all over the place - one of the rare places where OOS actually helps. OOS helps because in state yield is really, really high and OOS yield is not so to get 30% or so OOS kids they have to accept way more kids than they do for that same size population for instate. It’s also wildly different by major, region, etc. but they and VA publish a bunch of stats if you want to deep dive. You can look by gender, in state or OOS (choose tuition), major, etc.

Soooooo…is it tempting the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing to look at booking a hotel room for an admitted students weekend when the decisions haven’t come out yet? Really don’t want to jinx things, and yet…the overplanning tendencies are going into overdrive when trying to figure out spring break plans…

Don’t do it! lol

It’s making me nuts not being able to plan anything too!

You and @groundhog74 are right, I just need to step back and chill…there are bound to be hotel rooms available for that event, I don’t need to jinx it.

Thank you for talking me back from the ledge!!!

Thanks, Gumbymom. Your comments, as usual, are informative.

Not college related but S25 had his winter semi formal last night. He has never asked anyone to a dance and only recently attended his first one with friends for homecoming. He asked a girl who he likes and had been out with a few times and they went last night. He came home so excited and grateful that he had the experience before he graduates. So happy for him as I want him to enjoy his senior year.

I love this. Good for him! In the middle of all this college craziness it’s super important to remember that our kids are making memories they’ll always have.

I deeply hope that my boy gets the gumption up to ask a girl to a dance before he graduates! Unfortunately, the girl he’s had a crush on forever (that he thinks I don’t know about) has been dating this other guy for a long time. Other Guy doesn’t go to their HS, and I don’t know him, so while I’m sure he’s a perfectly lovely young man, I kind of hope he crashes and burns in this relationship….

And on a less snarky note, I’m currently sitting in the barbershop while S25 gets his hair cut. And just as I was thinking about how far we’ve come from the days when he cried at getting his hair cut and we had to go to the places where they play cartoons… the barber asked him if he wanted to have a hot shave too. Kid looked terrified, but answered no like a grownup. I’m a little watery thinking about the change from toddler watching Disney Channel to man-child getting (offered) a shave and a haircut…

Y’all, my son missed his Macalester interview this morning because his ADHD mom doesn’t read email carefully enough. It was in central time zone (duh) and he logged on two hours late. It was the last possible day to do it. Crickets from admissions. I think we just screwed ourselves. I feel so terrible-- neither of us picked up on it.

Oh I’m so sorry. That sucks and what an awful feeling. Sigh. I guess he just sends an email, explains what happened and offers an apology. Sigh.

I’m an alumni interviewer for a different school and I would completely understand a mixup due to time zones.

I agree with @Malsandhuskies. Mix ups happen all the time. I do not think it will be held against your student. Just have him send an apology to the interviewer in addition to contacting admission.
