Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

the PSU situation is wild. I wish there was a rhyme or reason for the acceptances.

Can someone explain what happened or give a link to a post that did? That is a huge thread to sift through. (This was one that dad thought was a good choice, but child was a hard no–so we have no skin in the game, but are curious what happened!)

Yes I’ve been so enthralled by Clemson ButtonGate I missed Penn State. All my EA threads are so tame comparatively :joy:

PSU is accepting students randomly…and kids are putting in for reconsideration when they don’t get what they want..and finding out before other applications are viewed.

Thanks

Just took a peek at the thread and I am relieved my D25 decided not to apply. A few of her friends are applying and the whole process sounds too stressful to me!

Our high school does such a great job of making sure that parents stay O-U-T of the application process that I had no idea that there was such drama with Penn State admissions. Lucky us, I guess!

Random things:

(1) My S22 is coming home on Monday. His last project is due Friday night, there’s a big social thing he wants to do Saturday. Train tickets were an extra $100 on Sunday so he’s coming Monday… but it’s an afternoon train and doesn’t get here until almost my bedtime. I’m ready for him to be home now since he couldn’t make it for Thanksgiving and am currently kicking myself for being extra cheap. He’s had a really challenging courseload this term, and I know is ready for a break. He’s also a little stressed out because a lot of people get their summer job lined up in October/November. He turned down an offer to return to the place he was last summer because he really wanted to try something that went in a different direction, but I think now he’s worried. (If anyone happens to know anybody looking to hire mechanical engineering interns, let me know. He’s currently got a 4.0 technical GPA (basically he got a B in one English class, every other class has been an A), he’s a double major CivE and MechE, and he’s got a lot of project experience both in school and on the job site. He’s an Eagle Scout and an athlete (plays club rugby now, did D3 Crew freshman year) and a leader in his various extra curriculars.)

(2) I went to a funeral yesterday and it was … weird. Hard to describe what felt so strange, but we’ll just call it unsettling.

(3) My husband has now decided he’s sick. Bless him. Maybe he is but he’s taking a sick day “because he’s cold”. It’s going to be really hard for me to deal with his typical sick whimpering when I’m still fighting through something myself.

(4) My S25 hears from an EA school tomorrow at 6pm. He’s calling it his second choice, but I think it’s really his first choice. I’m a little on tenterhooks for him. He’s finally, FINALLY digging out of his homework hole. Which is good, because I’m really tired of having to nag at him about it. He’s also got a track meet this weekend - which is great. He had a pretty bad hamstring injury last year and lost most of the indoor and outdoor seasons. The negative of the meet this weekend is that (1) the race is outside and it’s going to be cold; (2) it’s close to an hour drive away; and (3) he’s running the 55m, which means it should take him about 8 seconds to compete. Am I seriously driving two hours round trip and sitting and waiting probably for at least a few hours in the 45 degree “high” temp to watch him run for 8 seconds? Yes I am. Sigh. I need to find my glove liners.

S25 accepted to Rose-Hulman with a merit scholarship today! We are not yet at a price point with just that merit scholarship where it would make sense financially, so we’ll be seeing how financial aid and potentially other scholarships work out there.

He is really hoping to be invited to apply for the Noblitt Scholars program (full ride scholarship).

Congrats to your son! S25 also admitted to Rose-Hulman. It’s his top choice.

I really, really want to be over the moon, but I was surprised with the scholarship amount. I thought it would be more per the calculator, but we will see what we can finagle.

Excited for my future Rosie, though!

Best of luck to your son, and I hope he is invited to Noblitt!

S19 went to Rose for ME. It is a great school. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! Would love to know if the cost was worth it. It’s our most expensive option, but I my son has his heart set on it. (And I think it’s a great fit for him.)

Congratulations! It truly is a special place! :elephant:

Yes, I think the cost is worth it. S19 had a merit scholarship and a grant, but it was still pricey. He received a top-notch hands-on education. cfdad is also an engineer and he was impressed with the learning and experiences S19 had.

I’d probably spring for the Sunday ticket and call it an early Christmas gift.

I might see if I can re-book. As part of the coupon deal I used to get the low rate I had to agree to not changing the ticket, but I think if I remember doing the math the cost was so low that it would be cheaper to eat the ticket then to have done the extra $ to get a refundable ticket.

How many times can you check a college portal before you get locked out? Asking for a friend;)

Today I noticed an ID# listed underneath my kid’s applicant ID# (different numbers) in their top choice portal. I swear that ID number wasn’t there yesterday. I’m crossing fingers it means something good.
