Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Is it a school that has a much higher acceptance rate for ED? If so, and he really loves it, then you have nothing to lose. Is he considering not applying to it at all in RD?

No, it’s not much higher. Last year, it was around 30%, compared to 15% for RD. He does love it and already submitted his application for RD.

Then I think I’d be comfortable with the ED2 thing. He knows he loves it, so might as well make sure THEY know that he loves it too. And yeah, there’s the possibility that it might not work out - like a previous poster said, I think you talk about that with him and see where he leads and that he’s mentally ready in case that happens.

I think that’s a pretty significant jump. If he really loves it I can’t see any downside to doing ED. Either way, he’s going to get a result from them, so he might as well give himself the best shot he can.
I had hoped my son would apply ED to one of his schools, especially the real reachy ones, but he couldn’t commit to them yet, so that made his decision easy. He’s got a couple of tough RD apps still to do that are far reaches and I fear he’s wasting his time, but he’s committed to doing them so I’m supporting him through the process.

Best of luck to all of those with results coming out this week. We have 3 EA towards the end of this week, and one is a top contender. Fingers crossed! Rooting for you all!

I don’t see a reason not to ED2 from what you’ve posted. And if he doesn’t get in RD he will always wonder “what if”.

I’m a dummy - WashU doesn’t have EA, just ED, so RD decisions are not out yet. Phew! She applied so early everywhere I lost track of which were EA vs. RD.

Since the Rose-Hulman acceptance came in, the senioritis has already kicked in! Today is the last full day for S25 and then he has some finals here and there, although he’s exempt from several. And he is so over the semester. Last night was the winter band concert. I thought it was great, but S25 said “the band sucks this year.” He’s normally pretty delightful, but I think the nest soiling might be commencing. Lord help me!

Can’t wait to hear about all of the results rolling in for everyone else this week! :pray:t2: :crossed_fingers:t2:

Not totally shocked but D25 got her first deferral from EA to RD. But we are dropping the school off the list anyways as she switched her major and its no longer a good fit.

My college junior got home last night - I’m so happy to see him! He got in late so we didn’t have much time yesterday, but hopefully we can do some catching up soon. He now has a full beard - it’s pretty blond, and at least it doesn’t look like some of those p0rn-stache looks I’ve seen, but I do not love it. It makes him look so much older.

S25 finds out about UTK tonight. I’m hopeful for him, but nervous given the huge increase in OOS applicants and the concurrent increased requirement for spots for in-state residents. We’ll see.

Our big win for the weekend was that he was able to run in a track meet again - after tearing his hamstring at the end of Sophomore year, he lost most of his junior season. He lost most of the indoor season as he was still rehabbing then when the outdoor season started he managed to run in two meets before seriously straining the OTHER hamstring, likely because he was overcompensating. Which then ended his season. And because our school requires you to run in at least three meets, and he only ran in two for each of the seasons, he didn’t get a varsity letter for either indoor or outdoor track. Which, ok, I get, but he was the sprint team captain for both seasons. Even when he couldn’t run, he went to every practice, led the stretches, taught the younger runners, and served as a coaches assistant. He went to every meet he couldn’t run in as the team photographer, and after the Spring injury (which happened the second week of the season) he pivoted and was the team manager in addition to the other supporting roles. So it really sucked for him when he didn’t know he wouldn’t get a letter, was in line with all his buddies on the way in to the spring banquet, and the people passing out the things were all “sorry, we have nothing for you”. So junior year was hugely disappointing. I’m really hoping that now that he’s gotten a good run in this year without pain, things are going to go better.

S25 was expecting MAYBE six EA decisions between last week and this. So far, for three, he was not in the first wave of decisions in December and will find out in January. For the other three, it could be any day now. No date for those has been announced, but they all say mid-December.
I would love for him to get one more win before the holidays after the painful ED decision last week.

We were in the process of withdrawing apps last night and Pitt acceptance came through…I kept thinking how it would have helped relieve so much stress last week if it had come before the ED acceptance…My son never really shows any type of stress/anxiety to things and when my husband and I got home from our trip on Sunday, he admitted how nervous and anxious he was all day on Friday before the decision came out.

thank you!

S25 was accepted to George Mason’s film school! Also got a small merit scholarship. This will be the cheapest option for us, and might be the first choice because of the Korean program available at Mason.

He’ll need to do a tour of his choices again to help finalize, but we’re in good shape!

Acceptance into the ED school last night so no more apps! I was not looking forward to the late nights ahead for RD apps. :raising_hands:

Well, C25 was rejected by the ED school. So, now we get to wait for the 2 EA applications out, the 2 state school applications that will be later, and see what gets added to the 2 rolling acceptances already in hand. (Oh, and OSU gave C25 the WUE scholarship, so it’s definitely in the “as affordable as in-state” column.)

S25 just deferred from Notre Dame. Huge reach for my test optional kid so we’re calling that a big win.

Differed at MIT for my S25. Not really unexpected, but he is of course a bit disappointed nonetheless.

S25 is in to UTK with a nice merit scholarship and admittance to the honors program. He was excited for less than five minutes though because at almost the same exact time he heard that his track coach isn’t running him in the meet this weekend and he’s crushed. She’s starting a sophomore over him. The sophomore doesn’t attend practice but has a private track coach and is faster. This isn’t a meet where they expect to be competitive.
She’s also told him that he’s probably lost his spot on the relay team - the team that is now three seniors and a sophomore, when for years they four seniors on the team have dreamt of going to State’s together.

Last year he couldn’t run all year because of a torn hamstring that took a long time to rehab, so he’s so been looking forward to this season. By not running this weekend he won’t have an opportunity to get a fast enough time for the two invitationals in january, since he’ll have to rely on his sophomore year times. He’s crushed. It completely killed the mood from his acceptance.
