Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Also, I appreciate the questions…. It’s keeping me from fixating on how cranky I am that S25 has wasted his whole winter break and not done the homework that he said he was doing. So our last weekend of vacation for me and him and last weekend with college kid at home we will NOT be doing anything fun, because he just can’t get his ■■■■ together. I wish he just hadn’t even pretended bus was working earlier, we could’ve at least done something one of those days instead of being held hostage to his “homework” every day.

That was the first album I ever bought, I know every line of every song! :joy:

The final app just got submitted. It was a messy sprint to the finish- not pretty. My kid looks like he has PTSD from the whole process. He’s in his room and doesn’t want to be around anyone. Not the celebratory evening I was hoping for but so glad it’s done!

Envious! S25 is applying to a school that doesn’t use the Common App, so it’s a pain to complete–and the deadline is in three days.

Wow— just read thru a couple months of posts. I love this thread/group. And OctoberKate, I think you could be my long lost soul sister . An update on our journey: S25 has been accepted to ASU business honors, U Alabama honors (awaiting interviews and decisions for Blount Scholars and Witt Fellows), U Tennessee Knoxville business, UNC Charlotte (which he has since declined) and SMU. Deferred at UGA and U South Carolina. We are waiting on UNC Chapel Hill (not a chance), U Texas (not a chance), Wake Forest (tiny chance), U Miami (tiny chance), U San Diego, U Minnesota Twin Cities (which apparently has rolling admissions but it hasn’t rolled for us yet. Interestingly, everyone else on that CC board has gotten in and received gobs of money ). SMU asked him to apply for a leadership scholarship but I’m not sure I can get him to do the essays it requires— he’s sooooooo over this process. Plus, I just heard about a friend’s son who just completed his first semester at SMU and went thru awful, awful hazing as he pledged FIJI— incl ‘financial hazing’. I didn’t even know that existed. I’ve been on an internet deep-dive on hazing and let me tell you, it is NOT for the faint of heart. Now, after all this effort, I’m not even sure I want him to go!

Well, I just learned something new today. I’d never heard of “financial hazing”–had to google. To save other people time in case they are in the same boat:
Financial hazing is a form of hazing that involves making new members pay for parties or other social activities, or taking their dining cards.

That was the album my mom bought when we had started on a road trip and realized we forgot the cassettes. We listened to that album for over 1600 miles! :joy:

I never heard of financial hazing but now look it up. So to me I’d call it basically extortion.

Bracing the cold this week like a lot of the country. Brrr.

If you want to know more about the financial hazing my friend’s son experienced, DM me. It goes far beyond parties and meal cards. It’s really upsetting.

My son doesn’t plan to rush for a frat. But now I’ll add the conversation before school starts and dorm living of not being intimidated into paying any “fees”.

How did your son find the UC app process for one school? Is UCSD in his top 3 or so?

The reason I am asking is that I encouraged d25 to apply to a UC but when she learned about the separate application and the PIQs, she didn’t speak to me for a week.

My son was only interested in one UC and it was a school hallway down his list. He decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Turned out to be a smart choice.

Btw- U of San Diego is not a UC.

It depends where in Indiana. If you’re near the lake it can be dicey… but it could also be just fine. We had a mild winter in IL/IN last year and so far has been mild this year. The further from the lake you are the less likely there will be a lot of snow/ice.

Financial hazing sounds criminal. Makes me glad my kids aren’t interested in that lifestyle.

D25 got her prom dress the other day. I think she tried on about 25 dresses and the last one she tried on was the one. It’s bubble gum pink and sparkly. It is very “her”. There are so many beautiful prom dresses out there. However, D25 has a very pale complexion so we had to nix many of the muted colors right off the bat. Oh and the dress has pockets. lol

Just noting that there is UC San Diego and San Diego State University.

Yeah, that path was definitely an option for me, too. It was a struggle not to remind S25 that he would probably run out of time for doing work over the break, and here we are, returning to school on Monday, and he still has sooooo many assignments looming over his head.

I’m trying to step back and let it go, but it is hard.

(And now I will have flashbacks to S25’s first grade year when the only thing I heard was complaints about the girls on the playground belting out Let it Go for all of recess…guess I know my earworm for the morning.)

Well played, @beebee3 , well played…it wasn’t until I was brushing my teeth last night until I realized what you had done, connecting REO Speedwagon from the quail hatching reference to the ear worm thread. My hat is off to you!

I was responding to the person who got confused with U San Diego and UCSD.
I live in SoCal and very familiar with all of the San Diego schools. The names can get confusing at times
