so weird!!

Years ago I had a friend get an entry level job offer and swears they never applied! It literally came in email…They they had applied for a summer internship the year before (and didn’t take it/wasn’t offered it) so I guess HR had their resume..and either was confused or eager (it was a hot job market at the time..) They ended up working their 2 years and never got a full story

I once got called in for an interview for a job I hadn’t applied to. My best guess was that the similar job at the same place that I had applied to had language in the ad that said “your resume may be retained and you may be considered for other positions for which you are qualified.”

The best part of the interview (because yeah, I went, I was interested in the job) was when they asked “why did you apply for this position” and I answered “well, I didn’t.” The looks on their faces were priceless. I explained what I thought had happened and then explained why I was excited about the job, regardless of the fact that I hadn’t seen it to apply. The looked at one of the interviewers, who I guessed must have been some kind of HR person, who nodded and said “it doesn’t happen often, but it’s possible.”

I guess my answer didn’t freak them out - they offered me the job.

So on that note - @Izzy74 I think it’s absolutely worth seeing what the school has to say if the school is interesting! I ended up not taking the job (it was a terrible commute, would’ve been ok if they let me work early hours, but that was a no go) and maybe you’ll find that the logistics of this school are similarly not great. But who knows!

Hey, anybody know about WUE here? D25 didn’t apply to Utah via WUE, and I figured she’d just stay a summer and get residency to decrease costs, but her admission came today and they gave her the WUE scholarship. Honestly, I thought she had a good chance at the Presidential schol (6k more/yr), but I can get over that. But I thought you had to apply to a WUE college and let the college know you were doing that. Am I wrong? Do D25 or I reach out to admissions to query this? Or do I just say, hey 14k/yr, yippee!

S applied to one WUE school and the WUE discount was automatically included. He didn’t opt in or anything. I’m pretty sure it’s just given based on your address. For that school (and the different WUE school my daughter applied to in 2020) other scholarships based on merit were given and stacked onto the WUE discount. So it wouldn’t hurt to call and see if she could still qualify for the Presidential Scholarship or any others.

I’ll call, but they are pretty clear in their documentation that you can’t stack.

D25 got notice from Univ of Nevada at Reno that she was given WUE. We did not have to apply. If anyone on the West coast wants a 4 year university for a great freaking deal—UNR is it.

Meanwhile, only 18 more decisions to go for D25. We might get one this week–Univ of Colorado at Boulder.

Close friend’s son is a freshman at UNR. He is loving it!

Ok, thanks. I’m going to reach out to admissions tomorrow and ask if there are options–there’s a same amount scholarship for non-residents that would then allow her to get residency…or maybe it wouldn’t work? We’ll see.

No, WUE is automatically considered at Utah for applicants in the relevant states. It’s treated similarly to the auto merit (Presidential etc). It’s only things like departmental scholarships you apply for separately.

You still need to decide whether to take WUE. The cost isn’t much different to getting residency after a year, where you pay more upfront and then less in years 2-4. But it’s WUE or nothing in terms of auto-merit (ie if you qualified for a better scholarship like Presidential then you would have received it).

There are some other options, like instate tuition being automatic for children of veterans.

Whether WUE is automatically considered or not varies by school, but at the vast majority you don’t have to do anything other than have a permanent address in a WICHE state to be considered.

It’s pretty much never bad to be granted WUE tuition, though—most places stack their scholarships with WUE, possibly up to a maximum amount. To take my C25’s case, WUE tuition was awarded at Washington State and Nevada Reno, but both of them also offer national merit scholarships. At Washington State national merit replaced WUE because they can’t stack (national merit gives full tuition, and they by policy don’t award merit scholarships totaling above that amount), while at UNR they simply stack (which means that together they cover more than OOS tuition, though not the full cost of attendance).

But if Utah says they don’t stack, then they don’t stack—but the larger scholarship offered will take precedence.

D25 had planned to take Spanish 4 online this semester as there was a scheduling conflict with the in-school offered option. This issue also existed last semester but she and the school both thought that she could complete the full course in this semester.

She learned today that the District approved online program just dropped Spanish 4 from their offering. D25 and her counselor want to switch to American Sign Language.

The rub here is that in the Additional Information section of her application she told her ED school (to which she has been accepted) that she would be taking Spanish 4 this semester.

My advice to D25 is that she should notify the ED school of the issue and her proposal to switch to ASL. If they don’t have an issue with it then great, but if they do, it’s probably better to learn that now and adjust as necessary (there ultimately are other ways to take Spanish 4 than this one provider).

Is that advice accurate or should she not contact the school over this?

It’s worth checking, though unless they have a specific requirement of four years of a single language it’s highly unlikely that they’ll be worried, especially since it’s a scheduling issue and not just pure opting out. But it’s never good to have a surprise outcome, right?

Agee, If is a scheduling issue /school driven change I would be very surprised if it’s a problem with the university. Though I’d send a note

That’s a lot left! I think my son started out with that many during the EA application season, it was ten but then it grew. I asked but my son the other day if doing any RD applications, and confirmed NO.

I feel though that over the holidays some of the schools with acceptances he isn’t really interested in anymore, then also things are just naturally not coming together to seem likely for one reason or another. So, here we are waiting on the final five answers.

2 in and 7 left to go here. 4 by April 1st and then 3 this month - which has turned out to be the longest January on record - lol.

We’re in a similar situation - S25 has been taking ASL, which is a year long course. The teacher died in November, they’ve had a long term sub since late October. The sub doesn’t know ASL (they’ve been watching videos and doing a lot of nothing). I was giving the school until after winter break to tell us plans and if they’d found a qualified teacher. As it seems they haven’t, I’m going to ask that S25 be moved to a totally different course. I asked our college counselor (not the guidance counselor at school, private person that we contracted with) what to do - she said you need to tell the schools to which you’ve already applied, but if you have a good reason (in my case, death of only instructor, in yours, course no longer offered in a time/format that works) it’s not a big deal - it’s out of the student’s control.

The thing to watch, though, is whether that college requires four years of a language (some do). For us, S25 already has four years of French, this year of intro ASL was just a bonus to fill a weird empty slot in his schedule.

We’ll probably end up with choosing from three, which is reasonable to me. Even though we have 5 left to hear from, they are either the most expensive, deferred, and/or the reaches. After doing a little more reading on the possibility of merit on the pricier ones, I don’t think we’ll get that much, if anything. We’ll see when they results eventually come in over January and February, but without decent merit offered two won’t be possible. I talked about costs before applying, so it won’t be a surprise and he understands but hopefully won’t be disappointed as well.
