Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

This part really struck me – that it must be extra awful to be singled out by cranky-ass placeholder teacher when he’s in mourning for the subject and the teacher that he enjoyed. I’m sorry.

The kid’s good week continues - accepted to Muhlenberg with merit. Allegheny sent an email saying he was selected to get the creative arts scholarship and an interview for their Leader Scholar scholarship. Tomorrow he leaves for his senior trip!

My oldest went to Muhlenberg, absolutely loved it!

Yikes, I hope not. S/he’s a speedy little bird.

D got an email while we were out to dinner from Puget Sound saying some good news is coming her way tomorrow morning. She’s had a really stressful week worrying about the upcoming audition so this was great timing. Plus we’re planning a big 18th birthday party for her and we were meeting with the event coordinator just before. Apparently she knows me too well and said she’ll just wait until she gets a random text from me in one of her classes telling her to open the email and check her portal since I’ll be (obsessively) watching that account tomorrow lol. She’s going to send me the screenshot, I just love that kid!

My students have weekly written assignments. 90% of the time I have them graded before the next one is due. Huge pet peeve of mine as well. How can we expect students to learn and correct incorrect thinking if we aren’t giving them feedback?

Great news!!!

C25 also got a CAPA at Allegheny and they are looking like a top 2 choice. They’ve certainly rolled out the red carpet for us. I think we are going to be down to deciding between Allegheny and a much higher priced school (Union and Dickinson are the other top runners). In at Union with good scholarship but still $20k more per year and Dickinson won’t know til end of March. They won’t rule out some others but Allegheny seems to ahead of all of them. (Pretending I can understand a 17 year old’s thoughts)

Forgot to mention that the kiddo got himself into WPI with some nice merit aid. This, considering my doubts about how the regular admissions cycle will go, is a considerable relief. They didn’t look at his test scores, either, and his GPA was below their average so…YAY!

Thanks all for the kind words and commiseration re: the ASL class and lack of management on the part of the HS. I still haven’t heard anything back from them and am feeling ghosted.

In other news, big track meet for S25 tomorrow. We’ve got to leave our house by 6:30 AM to get there in time. I’m hoping he’s not too exhausted to run well. This season has been such a mess for him. They’ve had five opportunities for meets (counting tomorrow). There will be two more after this, but those are districts and regionals and who knows who will have good enough times to run. You must run in at least three meets in order to letter. The first meet he was still in PT and wasn’t cleared to run. He ran in the second meet. The third meet they could only take 25 students (the team has 150) and only took four male sprinters and he wasn’t selected. He was picked for one of the meets during the fourth weekend (there were two, you could only be in one) but it was cancelled for weather. He’s running in the fifth meet tomorrow. That will be two meets where he’s run. If they don’t count the snowed out meet, if they don’t select him for one of the post-season meets, he won’t letter even though he’s signed up for four meets, has been to every practice, and IS A TEAM CAPTAIN. He runs the warmup and cooldown stretches and manages the ninth grade boy sprinters. And I know they won’t make an exception, because they didn’t last year when he was doing all the same things (there were no senior boy sprinters, so he had the same leadership roles) and strained his hamstring in his second race.

So anyway, lots of explanation, but lets all cross our fingers that he runs well enough tomorrow that he gets into the post-season. I’m not feeling good about it. His best distance is the 200. He’s not running a 200 tomorrow. He’s running a 55 (he doesn’t get up to speed fast enough to be great at that) and a 300 (he hasn’t been training for that distance, so that is going to be a challenge.) He lost his spot on the 4x200 relay and really, that’s what he’d like back in a dream world. It’s not going to happen for the winter indoor season, but maybe for the outdoor season. We’ll see.

A big woo hoo! You know my thoughts re: WPI :grinning:. We love it. Does it have downsides, of course it does, everyplace does. But it’s been overall great for S22.

I’m crossing my fingers, toes, and everything I can for him! Hope he can get a good enough time to run at districts/regionals!

@OctoberKate, will cross fingers for your S25 tomorrow!

Update here: in at Utah (still need to audition for ballet, but in for modern) and Muhlenberg. Expecting one more result next week and then we’ll join the rest of you in the wait until March/April. But we’ll be distracted by auditions. One was cancelled last week and hasn’t been rescheduled, which makes me nervous, because I don’t know how easy it will be to fit in. She has one this weekend, but it’s driveable. In the ballet world, they say “Merde!” for luck, for, as the story goes, if people were coming to watch ballet in the pre-car era, the more people, the more horse poop. So wish D25 “Merde!”.

We visited Muhlenberg with S25 and it was such a great campus and seems like such a fantastic school. S25 was initially unsure about it right after the visit, but after thinking about it more he got really excited about it as a possibility and did a Zoom interview with them, which made him feel even more positively about the school. We ended up not applying anywhere else after his ED1 with full tuition came through, but Muhlenberg would have been a top contender.

We’re in decision mode over here. I think we have a new criterion for the school- closet space. D25 mentioned that she needs to bring 15 pairs of shoes to school, and H made some comment about how silly that was. She was appalled. lol

It is nice to think about these fun things about college now that all decisions are in. I love that she is relaxed and easy going about all of it now.

This sounds so wonderful. Your husband might be amazed how creative girls get when it comes to storing vast amounts of shoes in a dorm room!

I am looking forward to seeing my daughter in decision mode! She got one more acceptance yesterday, the last three decisions should come out in the next two weeks. Up until now she’s been very unwilling to discuss anything about actually going to college, even a little hostile over the last few weeks. (Which I totally understand, she got interrogated at every family gathering.) But a couple nights ago she casually mentioned that we needed to start putting together the pros and cons of her choices. It’s nice to see the light coming at the end of this particular tunnel!

Yes! My D didn’t really want to talk about this stuff. She was just so anxious about getting in to her #1 school. I didn’t even realize that it was her #1 until after she was accepted. She didn’t want to let herself even imagine she would get accepted. It’s become clear to me that she will end up there. She still isn’t 100% ready to admit that that’s where she’s going to go but I see the writing on the wall. She’s a little scared of making the wrong choice because her #2 is a great school too, but from the stuff she’s been saying, it’s a great school for someone else.

I hope these next 2 weeks go by quickly for you and you’re into the fun part soon.

I have a boy and he has at least 15 pairs of shoes. Nice tennis shoes, beater tennis shoes, uggs, waterproof boots, slides, flip flops, cleats, semi dress shoes, dress shoes. I mean he has more shoes that I do and I’m a woman. (he has a shoe rack in his closet for them in college)

My son has 3 pairs of shoes, maybe 4 if you count snow boots. :joy: One of the 3 is flip flops.

I keep telling him that he’s actually going to need dress shoes someday!

Now my daughter…
