Lots of good under bed storage options for both clothing and shoes if closet space is limited ; )
That’s excellent in decision mode! Hey, closet space is important
I can’t a read with mine on what he really wants to do with the decisions we have. I’ve asked his opinion or thoughts, but nothing is a definite yes yet.
It looks like a great campus. Congratulations!
My son never cared what he wore or what he looked like. Now that he has his first ever girlfriend he’s very into shoes and clothes and getting a regular haircut.
I’m working on a new area to let go with S25, and it’s about band. It’s been a great experience for him over all, but he is over it like he is about most things high school related. He’s made the All West State honors band the last two years, and the try outs are tomorrow. He has not practiced one lick for it. I have been cajoling him about it, and last night he said, “I don’t want to make it because it’s boring.” I wanted to throttle him, but I just reminded him that he’s representing the band and that he needs to try his best. Trying to remind myself that it’s his life and decisions, but it’s so hard when he is so blasé about school related things!
Hope everyone has a good weekend!
That’s my youngest. 1 Tennis Shoe, 1 Slide, 2 dress shoes.
we have an 8 tier shoe rack at home in our entry. I have one row (I keep some non everyday shoes in my closet), my youngest has maybe half a row. My oldest and husband take the rest lololol
My son I think is grappling with the opposite, he loves loves loves music, he plays both the piano and clarinet and the idea for him that music is ending is tough. His piano lessons end in May. His band ends at graduation. He thinks he’s not “good enough” to play in college. His band director told him when he knows where he’s going he’ll sit with him to decide what he can join music wise.
Music is what calms my son, when he’s stressed I know it because I can hear the piano on and off all day.
He’s like “a part of me is empty thinking about not playing”, so I hope he can find a less rigorous way to continue music in college.
I hope your son can find a way to continue playing. I was really hoping my son would continue one of his high school activities in college (band or skeet), but he’s eager to move on and try new things.
He will find a way! He can go onto his potential schools’ websites and just search for “music ensembles”. Many schools have many, many ensembles, some are associated with for-credit classes but some are just music kids getting together to make music. There are LOTS of kids who don’t want to pursue music as a career but don’t want to stop playing entirely.
My son plays with the concert and pep band and is also in rock band he started with his friends that plays around our town and at school events. He’s done a lot of investigating and really there are tons of opportunities at every school he’s looked at. Many schools seem to offer 1 credit classes for lessons, there are lots of ensembles etc. at all kinds of levels.
My husband went to an LAC and took trumpet and guitar lessons all through school and played in tons of groups and bands. Your son’s music experience may change but he’ll still be able to play as much as he wants to
I have one like that! sneakers, athletic sandals, wintery sneakers. oh and flip flips/winter boots which are both only worn like 2x a year.
This was my oldest D. She uses piano as therapy and I was really worried about how she would do in college without it. She wasn’t really into playing for a crowd, so ensembles and school bands would not have filled that need. She just needed to play by herself to relax. Luckily the school she attended allowed non musicians to reserve practice rooms. She used those a couple of times a week her first year. But she actually needed more, so we bought her a keyboard and head phones her second year and that was a life saver!
He’s strongly considering business at SMU and I’m like “dude, you are going to have to agree to some button up shirts and shoes that you didn’t go hiking in.”
The PNW has ruined him. I say that with love, dressing up here is wearing your climbing pants instead of jeans.
at my son’s college campus you routinely see people walking around in full pajamas and slippers. You only need to dress up for career fairs and interviews lol
we went to an open house at a school that is very business focused. Kid said upon arriving “did I miss dress code instructions?” since sooo many kids had on collared shirts and nicer pants.
They didn’t apply
My son (23) moved from CA to Oregon for college with just a pair of flip flops and his mountain biking shoes. It took until late November when he agreed to buy himself a pair of boots. D25 will be a very different story.
My S25 is not in the same situation as yours, having never been involved with a group, but music has definitely been a constant for him, first with piano and next with electric guitar. I absolutely LOVE to hear him playing upstairs in his room, even if he is doing some weird mishmash of Pachelbel’s Canon in D with the Game of Thrones theme song. It’s going to be a real change to not have that music in the house next year.
I will agree with other posts here that I hope your student can find a way to stay involved with music in college, especially if he recognizes it is so key to his life. FWIW, even at the small LAC I went to (back in the dark ages), there were great outlets for music within the campus but beyond the walls of the music department. (I distinctly remember seeing posters for the band with Sufjan Stevens around Hope’s campus, and I’m quite sure he was more involved with the English department’s education program that with the music department. And hey, that guy has earned some pretty impressive accolades.) I hope your kiddo will keep looking for options!!
I’ve told him music can be a part of your life forever, there are all kinds and levels of bands you can be a part of, so don’t stop.
I need to find him a piano teacher who is willing to work over summer/winter breaks. His current one will not since she’s hyper focused on guild, etc. And to be honest I’m not a fan and can’t wait to be done with her (he loves her, so that’s why he’s stayed). I need to do some research into that for next winter.
D25 has had a good few days. EA decisions are back and now she has quite a few choices, which is nice. Reaches and targets are yet to come.
Question though, are you all getting financial aid letters with acceptances? How are you finding out about TE for those that are applying to TE schools? One college didn’t say anything about TE in the acceptance letter, although it mentioned a different scholarship. But it had a financial aid letter which did include the TE. But when I go to the TE website, it still says “Import Decision Pending” for that college. The others colleges have mentioned scholarships too, but they have not provided financial aid package info or any mention of TE. I’m confused.
Some colleges send them with acceptances, others send them later. Pretty much every college with January or earlier application deadlines sends them by sometime in March, usually earlier, assuming FAFSA and (where required) CSS forms were submitted by their deadlines.
Your son might consider seeing if there’s auditions for non music majors at the schools he’s applying to. Some schools will give at least enough money to offset to cost of lessons and some schools don’t allow you to audition for the scholarship after the freshman admission cycle. It’s definitely worth looking into. Even schools with conservatories have bands or ensembles open to anyone to audition for.
