Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

D sent me the screenshot like she promised and UPS offered her an $18,000/yr alumni scholarship and although she didn’t see it I found a link to the music scholarship of $10,000/yr. It’s very generous but it’s an $80k/yr school and even if they offer a grant based on our SAI it probably wouldn’t come close to the $31k of Susq. D and I texted about the costs for a while since she’s in a class that is very lenient about cell phone usage during school. She understands and was told up front about budgeting. I’ll get a better idea how she’s feeling when she gets home.

Regarding shoes: Living with S25 is like living with Imelda Marcos!!! So many shoes! He’s a clothes horse for sure.

On the college front, we found out today he was invited to a special scholars program (priority registration!) at what I think is his top school. We would’ve found out sooner, but the email sat in his inbox for over two weeks before he noticed it!

Are your kids getting lots of emails from colleges that are ‘extending’ deadlines to apply? What are the reasons behind schools extending application deadlines? D25 has gotten at least a half dozen emails recently from a variety of schools and some are from schools that have low acceptance rates (Carleton College as one example). I would think these schools get plenty of applications that they don’t need to extend the application deadline. Others I am guessing are trying to hit a certain quota, and maybe that is the reason for all of them…trying to hit a certain number of applications?

yes, TONS and TONS have sent extensions.

Yes, they seem to do it every year now. It almost feels planned that way.

Just heard, son deferred from Villanova. A little disappointed, but I said well it is the most expensive for us. With that as a reach, I’m not feeling a positive on Regular Decision, plus it comes out way late in my opinion. And not committing to EDII for it for multiple reasons. Moving on.

The semi-related amusement here is all the reminder postcards C25 has gotten from colleges reminding of their 15 January deadlines—but what with the mail taking longer to get to Alaska, they’ve been arriving anywhere between the 13th and now, which doesn’t really leave much time for those applications…

No! I haven’t seen any except Villanova I saw on their website for CA. I was sort of hoping UTK was extended, totally missed that one.

In last few days kid got extensions on most recent deadlines for

Lewis and Clark
Franklin and Marshall
Lake forest
Bennington
New school
Stevens
Lehigh

U Chicago

All of them extended deadlines for my kid, I just saw it as an apply so we can take your money and deny you

I will say some still had fee waivers, so less about $ and more about increased selectivity

Are these extended deadlines for complete applications such as to submit supplemental documents like SRAR, ACT/SAT, or extended deadlines for applications?

Applications

None of those schools has my kid applied to

Nor has put in common app

But did get on their mailing lists

U Chicago my son had started the common app and decided against. Everything else just cold requests

My kid got one from Oberlin and just went for it, unprompted by me. Guess he really did love that school…but it doesn’t have engineering. Sigh

Such a rollercoaster ride for my son.
Rejected outright from UMass Amherst, which was a big surprise, and then accepted with merit to Clark, also a surprise.

Oberlin has a 3-2 program in engineering with partnerships with some pretty great schools. Would that interest him?

A rollercoaster is right. We’re expecting a wild ride between now and the end of this process. She’s not getting too hopeful about the reaches, for obvious reasons. But the targets could really go either way. It feels like a crapshoot.

Exactly. We realize that the larger state schools are not our friends, or at least don’t get my kid. It’s all about those holistic reviews!

Well, track meet day is moving along. He ran ok on the 55, not great, not better than his last time (from sophomore year) so he’s kind of down about that. Then, for his 300, he has a terrible seed. He doesn’t run this, so he got seeded at the end. He’s heat 120. Not a typo. One hundred and twenty. They are scheduled to start at 8:30, but they are behind, so who knows when he’ll be running. If it’s before 11:30 tonight, I’d be shocked. And remember he got up at 6:00 this morning so we could drive 4+ hours to get here. He’s exhausted and it’s only 6:30. I don’t know how he’ll make it five more hours and have anything left in the tank for a race longer than he normally runs.

Add to that, all his friends are seeded earlier, and they likely won’t stay. They didn’t stay for his lower seeded 55M. Then, because he was done later than them, they got lunch together and came back with to hang out together.

He’s feeling disappointed with his one run, really unexcited about his upcoming run, and kind of like his friends are just not there for him. He’s never been to this meet before and I think in his mind he had it built up as something really awesome and fun and good bonding. And instead he’s just tired and disappointed. My poor guy.
