Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

We have season tix for football and basketball, I feel like it’s a walk down memory lane having my oldest son there now! (although my mom worked there so I’ve been on that campus pretty much my whole life aside from 2017-2020)

Your daughter’s situation sounds like my daughter’s. She got into Purdue with a Merit scholarship, this would be our least expensive option. So this is now ber number one school. We are waiting to see if IU offers any merit. She got generous merit scholarahips from the private schools she was accepted to, so we will see once she gets any additional aid from Rose Hulman or Saint Mary’s.

We plan on doing revisits too. Daughter wants to make her choice and commit before April.

Howdy. Took a break from most stuff, while trying to enjoy the holidays and pretend there’s not something we’re waiting for that we can’t do anything to hurry up. Turning the “vibes” back on while we enter the final week or 2 of waiting for 2 EA apps. RIT & CUBoulder… Possibly by end of week, promised by end of month. Then there’ll only be one app remaining (UW-Seattle, which has no ED/EA options, only RD, and it’s March 1, and you’ll wait and you’ll like it) outstanding, and visits can be scheduled to make decisions…

So far, we’re at 3 accept, 1 deny, and 3 outstanding. Of the 3 accept thus far, 1 is kinda leading the pack, however it’s been the most “annoying” with the “we’re still here! just click accept! c’mon, you know you want to!” reminders. We’re trying to keep C25 on an even keel since it’s still the front-runner of the acceptances, though.

Do you know for sure UW is March 1st. I thought it was sometime in early March.

My brain had it as “due Nov 15, results Mar 1” – but I could totally be mistaken (or perhaps that’s an in-state applicant deadline). I’ll go look.

Ah, looks like the website has it as Mar 1-15. So, yeah, you’re right.

Let’s hope it’s on the earlier side!

We are waiting on Michigan too, plus one other school in January. Michigan does deny some during EA. In the CC thread from last year some posted about denials in January. Not many denials - most get accepted of deferred. We are OOS for Michigan and from what I’ve heard Michigan defers most OOS applicants.

We are really really eager for RIT over here..

FAFSA completed! Did the CSS a while ago and was dragging on this one. We’re not getting any federal or institutional need-based aid so it seemed irrelevant but we kept getting the emails so I just went ahead and did it. Does anyone love the question about current balance of cash/checking/savings accounts? I want to ask, do you mean the first of the month or the last day of the month, because there’s typically a serious difference :joy:!

Anyway, the FAFSA seems like an accomplishment. We’re waiting on 5 decisions, 1 EA and the rest RDs in late March/April 1… those seem so far away they’re not even worth thinking about yet. We have 4 acceptances in our pocket, with 1 financial and academic frontrunner, which is exciting!

Oh the FAFSA and CSS, glad that was over with for now.

In all seriousness, there’s an answer to that one!!

It’s a boring one, though—it’s the total of all such balances on the day you’re filling out the form.

So if you expect it’s possible you’ll receive need-based aid, and if you’re holding on to cash for a major purchase, it’s better to fill out the FAFSA after making that purchase.

And yes, need-based aid being affected by the timing of major purchases is stupid, I agree.

D25 just got some more money thrown at her from her #2. It would now be $8k cheaper than her #1. She’s still debating but the issue with #2 is that it is about 9 hours drive away with no quicker way to get home. She loves the teachers and the offering but she’s not sure the other students are her vibe. The issue with #1 is that she would just be an average student there. She wouldn’t be (we think) the stand out. She has to decide by March 15.

Is this important to her? A lot of standout kids became “average” in their college environment and that is usually quite alright. My kids love being surrounded by kids that are as engaged as they are.

The universe taught S25 no lessons. He didn’t prepare at all for the All West state honors band, but somehow he made the higher level band. I thought this was going to be a lesson in “See what happens when you don’t prepare?” but instead the lesson is “No prep might lead to a positive outcome.” Sheesh! But I’m still glad he made it since it’s his last year.

Hope everyone is well!

Oh wow. That’s early to decide. Would another visit where she spends a day with students be possible? That would help her see what they’re like.

We have a a financial frontrunner at the moment that I think might ended up being the cheapest by about $8k too…unless the stars align. But it’s definitely not at the top of my D’s list. Frankly, I’m getting little worried she’ll get into one of her dream schools and having it cost significantly more.

My S25 has never been too high on the two in state (and reasonably priced) options. Lately, though, one of them seems to be gaining some ground (although he’s not admitted yet, so who knows if that matters).

Of the schools he IS admitted to, the one that gave him significant merit aid seems to be dropping down the list. Which is fine. It’s a good school, and would be a good program, but I think other schools fit him better. I have a distinct feeling that his top choices are going to be (if he gets in): #1 = most expensive school; #2 = second most expensive school; #3 = reasonably priced state school; #4 = out of state school that gave such good merit it’s cheaper than state school; and dark horse #5 = school priced between the more expensive and less expensive options, but leaning towards the more expensive side.

Which, is fine. All of these are schools that would fall into budget even if they had no merit aid. Just some are at the tippy top end of the budget and some are not. He knows that if he chooses one that has a low enough cost, then he can use some of the savings to buy a car - which I think appeals to him a lot, but not enough to push him towards a cheaper school.

I’m still keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for your kiddo to get the OOS admit in the coming weeks. Tar Heels could use another good human being here who recognizes his family’s hard work. I know it’s a complicated situation, since the price and the admit rates are tough. But I will be rooting for you.

At the same time, I’m intrigued and glad to hear the in-state options are gaining ground. Fingers and toes crossed for you on that front, too.

As for around here, I’m trying to distract myself from general life anxieties with the more mundane (and, quite frankly, ridiculous). Right now, that presents itself in toenail color choice: do I update to Wolfpack red in the hopes that EA decisions from NC State come sooner rather than later and turn out well for my S25, or do I stick with the current Hokie maroon in the hopes that my nail color manifests a good result for what I think is the best possible option for S25? Silliness, but it keeps my mind on what I can control: home pedicures. :expressionless:

Question about housing deposits. Does anyone have experience with putting a deposit down at a school they’ve been accepted to and might end up at but haven’t committed to yet? Any schools where it’s a benefit to deposit? When we toured UMinn the guide kept saying it’s really helpful to send in your deposit b/c you can get better housing options the earlier you do it. My kid is likely not going to end up at UMinn so that’s not a concern, but I’m wondering if there are other schools where this could be helpful.
