My son is in the same spot. I kind of wish he didn’t take so many classes this year b/c he had enough credits to graduate after junior year.
Breathe. A B in English won’t make one bit of difference in his life. He just needs to guard against truly tanking – getting D’s or F’s that could lead to an acceptance being rescinded. I get the desire to finish strong, but I’d cut him a bit of slack.
Agreed. I told S25 to keep everything above a B- and they’ll be fine. They are super burnt out from first semester and I want them to enjoy there last few months of high school!
Same boat here. Kid is normally a “mostly As with one or two B+s” student. As of yesterday he had As, one B+, one B, one B-, and a C- in RELIGION. It’s from not turning things in, of course. I told him to turn in what he can before the quarter ends on Friday and that I expect nothing lower than a B. It will likely be his worst quarter ever, but I know he’s completely over high school and ready to move on.
I mentioned something to him about “soiling the nest,” and he asked “Which parenting or college message board did you learn that psychobabble from?” Touché, kiddo.
mine too. so over HS and their teachers..
We’re in the same boat except my kid gets all B’s and a few A’s so senioritis means i’m hoping he holds on to C’s and doesn’t slide into an academic warning for his last 2 months of school (currently at 2 F’s and a D with a week left and not everything graded yet). I have no doubt he’ll manage B’s and maybe a C or two to graduate, but this midterm report is causing major anxiety.
One of the small benefits of having an overachiever is I didn’t even need “the talk” about slacking off and doing something stupid because it doesn’t exist in his mind set. There are many many drawbacks to this mentality but this is a rare perk.
Ours was 1 sweatshirt and 2 tshirts that we bought plus a free Kohls cash blanket. The rest was swag and handouts from the college itself. No balloons. No snacks.
Around here we have:
a) our usual mid-quarter illness (seriously, the kid has experienced this every single year so far) with accompanying academic chaos,
b) no news from the remaining schools on his list, and a tacit agreement not to discuss college for at least a week or two while he tries to catch his breath,
c) a truly dire situation with the two remote learning courses that he needs to graduate (gov and econ) – although apparently he’s not the only one who is far behind and needing to buckle down,
d) a new varsity badminton coaching team who are determined to instill more discipline and competition in their players (which means more frequently challenges for the various seeds, as well as stricter practice attendance policies),
e) robotics competition weekends which we’re basically at this point writing off b/c there’s no way S25 can catch up on the other stuff, play his sport well, and manage to squeeze in robotics – not sure how anyone manages this actually! – and
f) QUAIL EGGS! (Speedwagon is definitely a hen. TBD on Gizmo.)
We’re here, although our third quarter doesn’t end until April 11th, so there’s more time. Currently failing English. Why? Just hasn’t turned stuff in. C+ in statistics, hasn’t turned stuff in. B- in Gov, hasn’t turned stuff in.
Wow, my son just finished 3rd Q and is in 4th Q. He’s done with school pretty much after AP exams
The ‘not turning stuff in’ syndrome had hit hard in our house too! So maddening! I keep telling D25 that if she just got stuff turned in she would have all As and Bs! And she actually has an incentive to keep her grades up. She needs this last semester to qualify for CSF Life Membership. This is the only special thing that is recognized at graduation at her school. Students get to wear a gold stole and their lifetime membership is announced with their name at graduation. ARRRG!
Pushing last few days of exams and projects for the end of winter term before we hit the much needed 2 week spring break…both of our C25s are very much in need of the fun that will be had. D25 got into a “likely” or “green” school with a very nice merit scholarship adding that to the win column and awaiting the roll out of decisions over next few weeks.
Technically, school goes until mid-June. I think the last day is June 18th or 20th. But seniors go on “senior experience” after AP exams. Basically the school realizes that the seniors aren’t going to work anymore, so they have a program where seniors line up internships or a project with a mentor or just start summer jobs early. It used to be that they basically did that for a month, then came back for a day, then graduation. This year they’ve moved graduation up to something like June 6th - so two weeks before the rest of HS finishes. Senior experience is only two weeks long which is fine, but if you’re trying to convince some employer type to take you on, two weeks is not a very appealing amount of time. But I’m glad they are graduating earlier, it gives the seniors a little more time for whatever before they have to head off to college.
My C25 took a bunch of their classes as dual enrollment, meaning they get a college transcript so they have to maintain A’s if possible since this transcript will be sent to any grad school they’re applying to. Now high school courses that won’t appear on a college transcript, I say shoot for straight B’s!
Those fried eggs are adorable. I imagine dipping tiny Melba toasts in them. A neighbor brought deviled quails eggs to a holiday party past year. The perfect mouthful!
One more acceptance yesterday for my kid - SDSU. It’s his first in-state and by far the cheapest, but it’s his least favorite - of course. Murphy’s law. If we weren’t in a position to afford OOS he’d be going there in a heartbeat. It’s a good school and ranks pretty high for LGBTQ resources. Would be nice to have him close.
I’m gonna miss this kid. It hasn’t fully sunk in that he’ll likely be far from us.
We had that here in Q2 (which won’t show on final transcript but would have on midterm reports)
Was so relieved an C- and C got pulled off
We kept moving our graduation up, too - although a number of our awards have “June” in the name and graduation is now in May… We found that giving seniors a week off after AP exams led to some poor choices from our students which put graduation in jeopardy - so now we have fairly intense programming for them (including trips, etc) so they graduate without issue!
In our home, my twins love their teachers (except for 2)—it’s the people they’re excited to leave! (Not friends, of course, just everyone else).
