Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

Right! That’s the “that will be useful for them”. Utility isn’t necessarily limited to credit or placement.

I love that your kiddo wrote a letter to you two explaining his choice!! That’s commitment.

And congratulations on having a decision. I hope that brings some joy to your house!!

Thanks! He’s very excited – what’s funny is a year ago he had never even heard of it, but we did a tour when we went to visit my sister over spring break. He was focusing on UCLA, but someone on this board suggested LMU and we got a last minute tour – and he ended up loving it and didn’t even apply to UCLA.

Happy to report that D25 is in at one of her top choice schools. It was a target, but those can go either way. Between merit and FA, it’s on par with state schools for cost. I am so relieved. We might have a winner y’all! There are more decisions to come, but there’s only one other target she likes as much as this one. She’ll be sad about rejections, but at least she’s really happy about this option.

I also love the letter, what a mature way to express his thoughts and to offer to contribute to the cost…you all have done a good job

Yeah, we were waffling on it, b/c it’s above what we had originally allocated for college, but he put together a plan on how he’d help pay for it, so we figured we could make up the difference.

It’s nice to have the decision, and now we need to make sure he fights through a major case of senioritis.

So nice to hear that some folks are coming to conclusions that feel right for their families!

No movement for us on the college front, not even talking about it, to be honest. We need to know the merit amount from Clemson, and we need to do Clemson and VT admitted students days. Those will be done by the evening of April 5th. Then on the 10th the three of us (husband, S25, me) fly to Greece for a little spring break, a little celebration of a variety of things, a little visit with S22 who flew out tonight for his term abroad. Ideally I’d like a decision to be made before we head out, but I suspect it will really be sometime after we get back on the 20th. The date you commit matters for housing for VT, so if he ends up there he may end up in poor housing, but oh well, it is what it is.

Re: the AP test conundrum, I think he’s leaning towards trying to do them both on the same day. If he needs extra time on the Chem test, then he takes it, and he just doesn’t take Gov. If he’s done with Chem in time, then great, he’ll take Gov. He’s actually pretty worried about Chem - he thinks it will be the hardest of all his exams and that he won’t know all the formulas he needs to know. But I think he’s realized that more time will likely not help with that. We’ll see how this goes.

Now I just need to figure out which teacher called me (she introduced herself, but she called my cell while I was in a meeting - I answered it and walked out of the meeting, but she was saying her name as I was walking out and telling everyone to go ahead without me. She’s not one of his regular teachers, but she coordinates the AP tests and I have no idea who she was.) so I can email her back…

In at Dickinson! Yay! But not nearly the merit we hoped for. So the decision process will continue as we try to compare finalists at dramatically different price tags.

Your son’s plan sounds reasonable. I’m sure he appreciates your giving him some space to make his own choices.

Clemson is really making you all wait for the merit. Seems like it makes it more stressful than necessary. As does the housing being tied to when you deposit. I see why the colleges do it, but I don’t like it. College is so expensive. Committing isn’t something to be taken lightly or rushed. It stinks to be disadvantaged in housing because you need time to process your choices.

I hope you figure out the teacher. Our district removed the faculty and staff directory from the website for “safety.” It’s impossible to find anyone’s name or email anymore. And they have multiple apps rather than a single consolidated one. I can’t figure out if there are ways to find specific people by role. My point is, I can relate.

Congrats! Sorry the merit wasn’t where you had hoped. I hope you have a good set of finalists though. Are you awaiting many more decisions?

D25 got in at one of her reachy reaches today! It’s the first admit that D25 has thoroughly grinned and repeatedly said “I can’t believe it! I’m so excited!” This was almost immediately followed by, “I’m going to have to make some hard decisions.” as this school does not have a BFA program for dance but has the level of academics she craves, the size she prefers, and will offer her the prof/student interaction that some of her big state school acceptances can’t.

She’s still waiting on 3 BFA answers and a few other schools, but has already told me that this school is “in my top 3 for sure” and is asking if we can fly out there.

I’m thrilled for her and already a little sad that she will likely say “no” to other schools she and I have both grown to love. Of course, you can only choose one, but there are so many lovely schools, it’s hard to let them go. (Good thing I have an S27!)

My son got into Carleton!!! It’s a big one and he’s very happy. It’s been a good week. Feeling very thankful, as these results could go either way!

That is mine!! They went to a webinar on dining/housing at their front runner tonight (already admitted) and I think it made it seem way TOO REAL. They thought rooms looked bad and then finally said they are scared of roommates, privacy, shared bathrooms, desk sizes (for all their tech), etc. They actually did see a dorm at this school on a tour last year. I did calm kid down a bit as we are going to see the school in a couple weeks for admitted students day and should be able to see dorms then in person.

Only Lafayette to go but not expecting it to be a contender because of price.

Finalists are Dickinson, Ursinus, Allegheny, and Washington and Jefferson. With Gettysburg and Union still hanging in there as backup consideration. COA ranges from $27 to $62k….love the $62k one but that’s a lot more than $27k…. Revisiting those 4 for admitted students days and see what happens.

Mixed news in our house today, but overall good. Both of the twins got in to Carleton; both waitlisted at WashU.

S25 had been really into the idea of WashU — especially the woodshops — but the school was a relatively late add to the “oooh” pile, so this had been hovering near the top of his list in a vague haven’t-visited-so-I-don’t-really-know-what-it’s-like-there-but-it-seems-great kind of way. We’ve advised the kids to treat waitlists as a rejection and to focus on the schools they’ve gotten into so far, and that message seems to be landing.

On Carleton, we haven’t visited there yet either, so that one’s a bit of a question mark. But! We were already going to be visiting Northfield for a St. Olaf admitted student day in April, and the two schools conveniently hold their admitted student days at the same time, so we’ll be in town and will able to check them both out. I’ll be curious about how the vibes at the two schools compare, and welcome any insights any of you have to share on that!

That sure is a wide range! We looked at a lot of those colleges too. Are you trying for TE? A lot (all?) are TE schools. I think they’ll have different vibes. I hope the admitted student days help you narrow. Fingers crossed the fav is the one that’s $27k!
