This reminds me, I have no idea when Prom is!?!?
For those who have college knowledge to share after helping their children navigate the admissions process, there is an organization that matches underserved high school students with volunteer college counselors. ScholarMatch was started by Dave Eggers, and while I don’t have personal experience, it sounds great and I plan to look into volunteering after S25 gets off to college in the fall. You can volunteer as a college coach to be matched with a student, or as a career coach to match with a student or give advice on an as-needed basis.
Good luck to everyone as your kids make their decisions and plan orientations!
I bought a pillow with our family’s photo on it for my oldest to take to college but he refused, claiming it was “creepy” (!)
FYI - if you don’t care to see what it looks like when you get it, it comes in a tiny vacuumed sealed package. When I got the pet pillows for the kids; I was disappointed because the package was so tiny compared to my expectations. They expand a lot once opened…Just saying
Every time C25’s weekly bass lesson finishes, right before the teacher logs off (they’re held over Skype) he says “Remember, have fun, be safe, be smart, make good choices, bye!”
So now I kind of feel like I have to get that pillow for C25.
I somehow read this as “weekly bass fishing lessons” and was caught off guard that those lessons were on Zoom.
ME TOO!
I think it’s because the word “finishes” comes right after “bass”. Also, random thought that on CC, the surprising part was that they were online, not that a student takes weekly bass fishing lessons.
I had a phone conversation with a financial aid officer at D25’s likely choice. They don’t seem to have a formal process for recalculating financial aid. But I explained some potential changes, such as new eligibility for an external grant, and wanted to know how our bill would be affected. I then followed up with an email that contained the relevant documents they wanted. Here’s my question for you all. How long is a reasonable amount of time for a college to process this kind of thing? It’s a small school. It’s only been a few days, but they didn’t even reply with a quick “Thanks. We’re on it.” type of email. I’m just a bit anxious because how they treat the grant could make a significant difference in our aid. I feel like I can’t put the deposit down until we have a better sense of the actual COA.
Meanwhile, D25 has been turning down colleges left and right. I thought I wouldn’t care, but it makes me feel anxious too!
Good luck to all your kids who have apps out for today!
Let’s get this done…until 2030 for me.
Really?! That’s exciting to hear! I’d be happy to chat by PM!
The font is what really seals it.
Comic Sans is very motivating and inspiring!
This is a perfect approach and gives me a good framework as we head to this next stage of her life. I love how you describe it as a collaborative team approach to making sure the student is supported towards their graduation.
I hope you find that approach where you child attends. I have been fortunate to have been involved with institutions that in different ways have supported students who need that extra or specialized support. So many staff and faculty are so caring and are really invested in helping students succeed. I wish that for your child.
Thank you!
I tasked my husband with figuring out what tech gear D will need and how it should work in the dorms. So he bought a britta, 2 space blankets (one for the roommate), a life straw in case she has to drink water from a creek and a crank powered flashlight. He’s very worried that winter in the PA mountains will put her into a survival situation while on campus. She is not the kid looking to head into the wilderness intentionally. I do appreciate him thinking about her future roommate and was concerned enough about them freezing to death in the dorms to supply both with survival gear.
Is she heading to Mars University? Good thing the roommate will have her own blanket so she’s not tempted to shiv your daughter for hers
I hear it gets pretty rough out there in the Pennsylvania apocalypse mountains on a college campus! Oh yeah he got her some MREs too so she won’t go hungry.
Oh, our prom is next week too. That’s so early. I think kids are getting ready here so I should provably clean or something. lol
