Thank you! Just found out the news today which throws a big wrench into things.
Thank you!
Yes, we bought a one way for D23 for her initial trip to school. Then you’ll buy round trips after that, for Xmas and maybe Spring Break. When your child comes home next summer it will be a round trip too, arrive May leave August.
This is what we do also.
This is how we things seem here too. D25 also fell in love with two highly rejective SLACs. Rejected from one, waitlisted at the other. The one she was waitlisted at was her fave by far. We saw and she had eyes for no other school. She was too scared to apply ED (as was I for financial reasons). And then her friend got in and she was waitlisted and she’s just heartbroken. She knew it was a reach, but she would not really take any place else seriously. And now she thinks her chances of future success are basically ruined. Meanwhile, I have an undergrad degree from a place most people haven’t heard of. Somehow I managed to get a PhD at an Ivy. My life wasn’t ruined. Go figure.
My wife was a USAID contractor, so definitely know what you’re going through. It sucks.
I hear you. ED was not an option financially for us and even though he had a top choice, he really liked the others so it was too early to commit to one in the fall. I also feel that the ED acceptance rates at these schools are inflated for an unhooked kid like mine.
I got rejected from my first choice, which was the same as my son’s first choice. I predicted the repeat heartbreak and hoped he wouldn’t like it when we visited. But I ultimately ended up on clinical faculty at an Ivy League institution. There are many paths and that isn’t to say this job is any better than any other. I think they can have a narrow definition of success. He is slowly coming out of it. Admitted students day this weekend is the real test. I hope things turnaround for you all.
Glad to hear your son is coming out of it. He deserves to start college on a positive note.
Sorry for your wife I’m a single income so it’s pretty dire, but I’ll figure it out somehow. Life goes on.
Daughter and I are both sick of talking about this and thinking about this.
She told me that she made her decision “weeks ago”. She just hasn’t wanted to tell her Dad for fear of disappointing him and hasn’t wanted to tell me because I would say that I was right all along. Insert mad face emojis here.
How we got to this point I’m not sure.
I wanted her to say “I really want to go HERE!”
I guess that is not who she is and maybe impractical given that money is, unfortunately, a factor.
Despite the long car time you have, I’m pretty jealous. We live in the Midwest and our 2 college kids will be at UW Seattle and some as yet undetermined SEC school next year. If only driving was possible!
We are lucky in that regard (that it’s driveable). For both my boys, being within a days drive was an application criteria. My S22 applied to and was accepted by Purdue, but as soon as he knew he had gotten in to other strong engineering programs and they had given him merit (we knew we could afford Purdue full cost) he let it go, because he really didn’t want to be a flight away.
Is anyone else trying to decide on Verto Education for first year/semester abroad? My son received guaranteed sophomore transfer with one of the options being thru Verto and so wanted to see if anyone else has experience with the program and how it went for your child.
We are down to two here, my daughter withdrew her application from UNC Wilmington last night. She has all but decided on NC State, but she says she is not yet willing to commit and she doesn’t want to let go of Temple yet. I can totally sympathize with her - it’s hard to see two exciting possible futures and then just turn your back on one of them.
Reading everyone else’s updates is really interesting. I’m glad for this thread!
So excited to hear where your daughter lands!! I know UNC W had some appeal (after your interminable wait for the honors college decisions, arg!), so it’s a big step to let it go. Good luck!
We let go of Union last night. This one pained me a bit since it was the first big target acceptance for S25 that threw a nice amount of money at him. He didn’t feel a strong enough connection to the school and prefers schools with less or no Greek life. It makes our crazy college road trip a little less crazy, at least. We are now down to five schools. (Insert eye roll)
Yes, I haven’t been as active in posting lately, but this step has been really hard for her!
So well said! That is exactly where my son is. He has two options, USC and Berklee, that are both exciting and so different. Letting go of one is going to be difficult.
One way ticket for initial flight there. Round trip tickets for trips home for breaks. For example:
- round trip ticket for Thanksgiving
- round trip ticket for Christmas/winter break
- round trip ticket for spring break
- one way ticket at end of school year
Yes! We are and it’s been a challenge to find info. Here’s another thread. VERTO Study Abroad for first semester freshman year/ Spring matriculation
