UBC is one of my kid’s final 2! We toured the campus over spring break, and it was so beautiful!
Hooray! My D22 is a junior at Rice, and it was the BEST decision ever. She couldn’t be happier, and she’s had a fantastic experience. We’re also not close – several states away and a 13-hour drive (or 2-hour flight) – so I am happy to answer any logistical questions!
The residential colleges, O-week, the “happy nerd” vibe – Rice is just such a special place. I wish my younger two could attend – we love it so much – but it’s not the right fit for either of them, unfortunately.
Yay, a new Owl!
I am LOVING everyone’s commitment posts! I am so very glad to hear about these happy and relieved young people. Congratulations to your students and to you as well, Mom and Dad! You have much to be proud of and thankful for.
Awesome–what other school are they considering?
Let me know if they end up going to UBC. D25 just submitted her visa application.
Not that it would make a lick of difference now, but Marist just reached out to S25 and offered him a spot off the waitlist.
I’m not sure if we are making much progress in the decision process, except that it looks like he is probably down to 2 from 5 but those 2 are stubborn. S25 met with his longtime mentor last night for 2 hours, which only really helped to move the dial from one side to the middle, firmly in the middle.
His last effort is to meet with his college counselor, who has less of the emotional input of me or the mentor, and more of the nuts and bolts input, which is exactly what he needs at this point.
I’m just worried he is going to make a choice based on everyone else’s opinions and not his own. I definitely don’t want to be blamed if he does not have a great experience at a place we pushed. It is so tricky.

Yay!!!
I’ve been waiting to see this decision! I’m so pleased kid is happy and seems like such a great match for them!
Not that it would matter, but Univ of Toronto just reached out to D25 and gave her $40k in merit. I told D25 it was the “Cold Weather Tax Offset.” But these things are happening so late in the game!
I hope he has some clarity after the meeting with the college counselor. It is so tricky. We were also so afraid our son would make a decision he thought we wanted him to make and didn’t want him to blame us when the (inevitable) bump in the road happens first year. We were careful to balance out any positive thing we said about one with something positive about the other, even when we were leaning one way. We were surprised at how sure we all felt once it all clicked. I hope your son is able to have that certainty and be able to really soul search and think about what he wants! Hang in there.
D got an email saying they are not awarding her the music scholarship since it was for majors. They will decide if she gets a performance scholarship and will get back to her. It was for $3,000/yr so definitely not an amount that would affect whether she can go or not. Luckily I knew going in that it was a strong possibility she would change majors.
The school sent out an email a while back saying they were going to select a few students to be awarded free housing for the entire year. D was one of the chosen ones! That’s $9,000 off the COA.
We had a fantastic visit today at Vassar. It’s funny- of the 3 schools that we reached out to to set up visits outside of the pre-programmed admitted students days, this seemed on the surface the least promising. Just a link to “click here to sign up for the tour” and “click here to sign up for a class.” When we arrived for the tour today, we fully expected to be part of the same general info session and tour that we attended last year. Instead, when D25 checked in, we were told to wait over on the side and let the main group leave. Then we had a personal info session with an admission officer and a student, followed by a personal tour with a student. I do think this would have been a bigger group had there been any other admitted students who signed up for a Tuesday afternoon tour/info session. Still, it felt very welcoming.
Now that I’m typing this up I’m realizing that it’s not really different from the experience we had yesterday at Mt Holyoke. We had a tour and then an info session both just for admitted students. There were multiple other families at both (more at the info session than the tour).
Anyway, both experiences were good, both were welcoming experiences. D25 liked both but I think the Vassar has the edge right now. She’ll attend a class tomorrow morning. Then it’s on to Smith!
Would love to hear how the class goes. My son didn’t have the opportunity to take a class. I think it would have been very helpful.
I’ll keep you posted!
Also University of Delaware, interestingly. She wants to study entomology and Delaware has a program she’s in love with. However, she also really, really likes UBC, and UBC is a great research university.
I will let you know if she does! I plan on having her buckle down and make a decision this weekend. Because that’s a lot of paperwork to get going on, haha.
You all won’t be surprised, but I’m announcing it anyway:
My daughter will be attending Baylor University! We are super happy! My daughter is very excited and seems very confident in her choice. (We’ve actually known for about a week, but I was giving her time to process her decision and change her mind if necessary.)
Despite all the back and forth drama about Clemson, all three of us feel great about Baylor. We knew 20 minutes into our tour during their scholarship weekend that this was most likely the school for her. Then everything else during that weekend was (as Matthew McConaughey would say) green light after green light.
As far back as her 7th grade year I believed that Baylor would be a good fit for her. But it took convincing my daughter and my husband. My daughter wasn’t even going to apply there, because she had her heart set on going someplace glamorous (Boulder) and Waco (despite Chip and Jo) is not glamorous.
During the scholarship weekend, Baylor went from being just another school for my daughter and husband to the top of her list. We all loved the campus, the people, the program, the opportunities, and the way the school is run. It feels very different from any other school we visited. Baylor is an excellent fit for her, and fit has been the most important quality for us. Our daughter realized quite quickly that Boulder is not the same fit for her that Baylor is. I mean, Baylor sent her a Lego set. Most schools just sent her stickers. You wouldn’t believe how excited she was about those Legos.
The proverbial cherry on top? The very generous merit awards and grants they are giving her. It’s a coincidence (or maybe it’s just meant to be) that the school we loved the best for her is also the least expensive.
Of course we still have a soft spot for Clemson—but also for all the schools that she was accepted to. However, we’re going to be flinging green and gold afar for the next four years. Sic ‘em!
that is amazing
It really is. She was more exited about the Lego set than about any of her acceptances or any of her scholarships. LOL, teenagers!
I will say — after paying our Baylor deposit tonight, she then let go of all her other acceptances. That was really hard. She poured a bit of herself into each application, so even if the decision was obvious, it still hurt. The Clemson one tore her up.
